Description
This is a basic blues/hokum style song which I wrote last year [2008] It maybe a new direction for me, sort of back to the thirties. Some basic home made type percussion was used to make this record and the whole thing is very rough and ready which is exactly what I wanted. The recording itself hasn't been messed with much in the way of compression and so forth so it may be a bit on the quiet side. Hope you enjoy it.

Love honky tonk piano
I think this is the first song I have heard with it on MJ. Very nice change of pace here. Rough works for this kind of piano, in fact a tad out of tune does too (your isnt though). Loved it man, great job!!! Favd and dl

In fact
and this is the first time I have EVER suggested this, but if you could make the piano a tad out of tune it may actually add to the song.

thank you Charles
I'll give that a try sometime - the out of tune piano- I mean, I remember years ago Keith Emerson detuning studio grands from time to time- I recall tracks like Jeremy Bender and Benny the bouncer and he did a few with The Nice as well ...........good fun.

Nicely done!
I've been listening to a lot of 20s-40s blues piano lately and this has much the same spirit. What was the homemade percussion?

Thank you Michael
for listening and for your comments. I'm sure you'd like some of Lil Johnson's recordings with Black Bob on piano done in the thirties. The drum sound on this was made by tapping a cupboard door which was then slightly EQ-ed to give what you hear. I understand this was pretty commonplace on many early field recordings back in those days.

Love this, man! Spot on in every way. Love your piano playing, as always, but that's a cool guitar part, too. Great groove, tune.

Play it again, John!
Hey this is too much fun. The sawdust is on the floor, the beer is on the table, and the boogie/honky/blues is now on the iPod. Thanks man.

Hello Richard
thank you for your kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed it, I can remember the days when the beer used to be on the table here and when we used to have these sessions, but sadly no more beer, or at least not often these days. Those old recordings were primitive but great fun to make and I have kept many. Thanks again.

Classic
my friend! I love the old school feel!! You nailed this. I love it! I love how the static kicks in just before the vocals, kinda of pre 2" tape stuff. haha.
Great job.

thank you

This track was parcelled up just as it was so I'm sure that it has many shortcomings, I spend too much time sometimes messing with things I'm not really interested in if you know what I mean.

Not
only are you blowing me away with your piano work in your last few posts, but the homemade percussion is so cool!

This still has that classic woofer feel! But piano infused!

Boogie on down!
Although I'd have been tempted to throw it all through Izotope's Vinyl plug-in to give it an even more authentic feel I think this should stay as it is. Besides, that sound we are so familiar with from the 20s and 30s was only there because of the technology and not because they wanted those crackles.

Excellent work John :-)

Cheers

Dick

hello Dick
I've just downloaded that Izotope thing you mention but I'm afraid in my case it actually makes the recordings sound cleaner ! I think it maybe something to do with the £3.99 microphone I'm using.

Thanks for listening, seriously I may give it a try and see what it sounds like.

oh WOW - love your piano playing here!! you are GOOD at this! charles's idea about the out of tune piano - i THINK you can locate a honky-tonk type piano instrument in various software programs, that has that feature - just sounds like an old, beat-up upright in the back of a bar. your vocals are terrific, this song is awesome - congrats woofer!!

Great song, John
Cold use a remix to get some of the levels straightened out a little, but that's just me, I can never leave them alone.

What a cool blues track, love the piano and the bass working off each other. The vocal needs up in the mix some, but you did a hell of a good job on it.

Love it John,

Ed

Jelly roll it
you can tussle blues piano so right, I'd love to hear as many of these as you can churn. I especially like the historical element you bring to it - i.e. not too many coal houses anymore, at least here in the States.

Hi mr.Boss
thanks for listening. You are right coalhouses are a bit of a rarity these days. I think this was inspired by Frankie Griggs wonderful record of - The coldest stuff in town - I love that record.

YEAH!
This is GREAT! I love it. Sounds like tape his on the vocal track. That can be fixed, not a big deal. WOW I LOVE IT. And did I mention I love it? Only that last little delay/echo on the last note gives-away that this isn't some oldie you dug up from grandpa's attic.
