Description:
Sometimes we need backstory to know someone. On a memorable trip to the Bay Area, my then girlfriend shared a special place from her childhood. In the rolling hills above Oakland, there is a carousel that she frequented with her brother and sisters. While munching popcorn; the piped in music swirling above the circling riders, we shared stories, and deepened the mystery.

Lyrics:
Up and down the painted ponies parade
the calliope sings such a blissful refrain
smiling pink faces with secrets to share
go around and around. without a care

Gaze out the window, the mountains below me
a tapestry patchwork laid out to the sea.
Shrouded in mists, way out on the horizon, lies
the home of this little girl who's waiting for me

Hide and seek, ollie oxen free, hide and seek no you'll never find me
Run so fast, as fast as you can. no you'll never catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man

Down in the valley, the bluebells are sounding
the fall of the water is calling your name
And the redwoods stand guard, ore the hills of Ladera, the house is now gone but the feelings, the feelings remain

Pixies and knees socks, all covered in bramble
innocence lost is so hard to regain
swimming in the tall grass, the breeze sings a lullaby. Sticky weed clings to the memories, ah the memories we weave.

Hide and seek, olie oxen free. Hide and seek oh you'll never catch me. run so fast, as fast as you can. No, you'll never catch me,
I'm the Gingerbread Man.

Just you and your guitar &mdash 12/19/04 - 04:35:16 PM
Nice treatment on both the vox and guitar.

Nice piece. &mdash 12/19/04 - 04:50:20 PM
I love how the guitar's rhythm really invokes the circular
motion of the carousel. Nice voice...clean guitar. Great
first post...but now that we know what to expect, we want
more :)

You have a lot of talent &mdash 12/19/04 - 05:36:18 PM
Up front let me tell you I think your performance is great.
You have a great voice – character and in tune the whole
time. Your guitar playing is excellent as well.

My constructive criticism is – why did you bury that great
voice and guitar with such heavy effects? I’d love to hear
the song with a minimum of effects. I’d also like to hear
more bass in the guitar. I glad you mic’d it. But with that
condenser you should be able to get a real rich sound.
Seems like the mic was too far away. I think you were
going for the carousel round and round theme in the
breaks but I thought it may have been a little repetitive or
a tad too long – especially the first one. Feel free to
disregard that last one as it’s a matter of taste and
everyone is different.

All-in-all, a great contribution and it’s good to have you
sharing your music!

8-7(9 for performance, 5 for the heavy effects)-8-7

Bam! &mdash 12/19/04 - 06:30:42 PM
Nice first submission. Excellent storytelling aspect to this song. Yeah, there are production issues with the recording. But the intimacy is there. As is the talent. Thanks for sharing. 8888

Thanks! &mdash 12/19/04 - 11:25:39 PM
Thanks for the comments everybody, greatly appreciated!
In answer to a few questions...
Had problems with my Ozone, bought it used and have had issues with the instrument input from day one. Tried to just go with just a mic but I think I "ate it' to much, wanted to get more vocals and less guitar, wound up with lots of SSSS and a too hot treble on the Taylor.
The vocals were fun to play around with and I tried to keep effects off the lead, but I tossed a litte chorous to soften the guitar and it ended up moosh/swirly.
I'll keep trying, Thanks again all.

Purely pleased Packosmokes &mdash 12/20/04 - 12:58:32 AM
I love the intimacy and simplicity of this song. Doesn't
sound like Cat Stevens, but reminds me of his more
innocent tracks.

I'm not a huge fan of the echoey voice. I think it's a cool
idea, but something about how it lives in the song, breaks
the mood for me... but not very. It's an extremely minor
nitpick.

Great Vocals &mdash 12/20/04 - 03:36:02 AM
You have a fabulous voice. Nice harmonies, and although
you do have some effects on here, I dont mind them too
much, I can hear what you you were trying to achieve.

great guitar playing and all in all, nicely arranged track
here. I look forward to hearing more from you.

Pacie and Slimmie;
If I may be so bold to call you both. Thanks for the positive feedback. I guess suffer from the dread AES, amateur effects syndrone. Lack of confidence in your voice is part of it. Settling for a not perfefct take in order to finally get something posted is another. Had to play with a bunch of little cuts and such in order to get it off the computer and on line.
Thanks for your feedback, aloha.

great first submission! &mdash 12/20/04 - 11:35:29 PM
This is a well-conceived and executed track -- very
impressive for a first effort indeed!

The previous commenters have pretty much covered it
already -- good observations there -- so I'll just say that I
enjoyed your guitar playing which fit the good lyrics (nice
story!) very well, and your pleasant voice and harmonies
were excellent. I look forward to hearing more from you!

You caught this tune &mdash 12/28/04 - 03:32:19 PM
What a great song. The lyrics are wonderful, and the song
structure is classic, perfectly balanced. Nice mix of
singing and soloing. Love the storytyelling, the
metaphors, the great vocal performance. My favorite
moment was the counter point in the voices in the last
hide and seek. Brilliant. The sound is maybe too tiny, not
sure why you wanted it so tiny, but the song and
performance are magnificent. Folk-pop songwriting at its
best. Great track.

Great &mdash 01/03/05 - 02:33:06 AM
Beautiful harmonies with great voice.
Interesting to hear the panning of different harmonies.

Can't wait to hear next.
