Description
This is a sound design assignment I had to do for a college class and I must say, I enjoyed doing it, and I thought I'd put it up here. I chose a scene out of Dickens' A Christmas Carol (I was working solely from the book.) It starts out just after Scrooge has met the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come and they walk up to and enter The Exchange, where Scrooge overhears a conversation between a few old 'friends' of his: A great fat man with a monstrous chin, a man who takes a vast quantity of snuff, and a man with a very red face and a pendulous excrescence on the end of his nose. (See if you can tell who is who!) The text in this part is surprisingly descriptive as to the sounds Dickens want the reader to "hear" in his/her imagination. These include: general talking, footsteps, money chinking, laughter, &c. Though it is pointed out by Scrooge in the film versions that he is not "in his usual place under the clock," a clock is not mentioned in Dickens' text. However, I did use the sound of a clock ticking because I believe it adds a sense of tension and foreboding to the scene.
