Description
Dia de los muertos —
Seemed like a composition celebrating the traditions of honoring saints and souls would be appropriate for right about now. I do not know why THIS actually popped into my head this evening, but, well, here it is. Those who follow my music might find this a little strange...or not. I've hidden the 13th c. Latin hymn Dies Irae inside here and there. I've been pounding this out for a couple of hours now and don't know anymore if it sounds good or if I just THINK it does. BEWARE — loud volume if you are wearing headphones. (Your comments are most welcomed.)

a favorite motif
it is such a strong melody, it can never die. Such an interesting choice of instruments... the combination of organ, piano and synthesizer evokes warm memories of ELP. A grand procession. Perhaps a little busy and muddy in spots, but definitely a wondrous journey, and great writing and playing.

what exactly you wanted to say ( I ve listend
to too many Dies Irae) this is certainly a true
genuine remarkable one .I m so in awe about your
orchestration and how you used all the elemnets
here ...Outstanding is my final word to it and
that syth like sound into organ padel just
all what it hold so true so deep ..gave it a
true special flavor ... I was so much waiting
for an Organ piece and this is a true one to

It's as though
I've been transported to a large Concert Hall when I listen to this. So dramatic and powerful..... and yes it does sound 'good' and quite a bit better than that too Paul, regards M

Hi Paul......
I'm in a similar position to Feter with Dies Irae pieces. I've listened to many over the last few years. This versions stands aloft, with many of them, in many areas. I enjoyed the modern, almost Mike Oldfield-esque style, with the special Paul magic and the choice of instruments was excellent. Every part seemed to both stand out and fit together so well.

An excellent composition/arrangement.

Take care.

Paul

Dies Irae
multi-layered beauty. this sounds like this could be live on a grand theatrical stage. A true art piece. Wold like to understand more about this inspiration and how it did pop in like it did, and how close the final production is to the original nebulas. can I use that word,,,, just did.

Somber...
but the bells lighten it up. Paul, you never cease to amaze me with the versatility in all the styles you can play. This does have a timeless feel to it. It would send shivers if played in a grand cathedral.

You made an impressive soundstage, Paul...
...both wide and deep... And with musical elements sitting in every part of the sonic spectrum....

I particularly enjoy the deep and rich organ tones....

Wish I knew the Dies Irae.... I'm reading a book just now that quotes from it, and I feel I must know it, but I don't....

Dies Irae
For anyone who does not know this 13th c. chant—a hymn that is traditionally sung during the Requiem Liturgy—here is a link to a respectable rendition online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlr90NLDp-0
All sorts of composers have used this music somewhere in their works. Rachmaninoff reputably used it somewhere in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS Symphonies and Piano Concerti.

In
many ways this is atypical of your work yet it still retains the cohesiveness and tasteful choices that are always present in your music. Haunting and memorable.

Yes, Paul...
...you've got to stop kidding yourself into thinking your music sounds good.
;)
Actually, I know that feeling. But have no fear: it's quite nice. The glockenspiel's a nice touch. Very endearing...
Love the way you weave the organ back in around 2:50. Gorgeous...

a Dan Brown
tune :-) a mystery within a mystery. The music just draws the listener in. It stressed sometimes, but I thought that just made the following string parts all the more intense. Lots of visuals

Me almost missed this Paul. My deep apologies!

To me this is not strange... this just shows the depth of your genius Paul! There are are no musical boundaries to one such as yourself!

This is pretty damned amazing!!!

Excellent post Paul
It really is that good - trust your gut and let 'er rip like this more often. One of these days we'll find you embracing dissonance and feedback and then we'll be in big trouble. You could always say MJ made you do it. Till then - I'll take whatever you're serving - it's always a treat.

Another surprise
Much darker than your usual work but excellent!

I love the orchestration with little touches on the bells and the discordant passages.

Thanks for sharing this.

Cheers
