Description
I met John and Liz Mathews in the mid 1970s when I was guest for the first time at their folk club at The Unthank in Norwich. We became good friends and I quickly grew to love them, their music, poetry, art, humour, hospitality and family.
John is an excellent artist as well as a song writer and this song of his is typically gentle, good-natured and evocative.
Many fairs all over Britain have been going continuously for hundreds of years. It's a pity I missed this and every other annual fair on the Suffolk border since Edward the First but I'm glad John commemorated the last ever Barsham Faire in his song. He made it seem as though I'd been there too.
If you Google Barsham Faire you'll find a lot about the rise and fall of East Anglian fairs. Rumour has it that they may restart next year...
The tune at the end is Nantwich Fair and the whole thing was recorded on a portable Zoom.

Folk music is entirely not my scene or my cuppa, but an occasional gem like this good for variety. Good song and good performance. Much enjoyed.
