Lullaby for the Inner Child

Description
"As we grow up, we always carry our inner child with us. Wonder and curiosity... there are so many things the child sees. However, this is a view from above. We are now adults with good and bad experiences of life, looking inward. It is time to revisit our inner child, with some regret and some hopeful wishes. Please slow down. Listen to everything. See the music through the eyes of your inner child."

I wanted to write a slow, gentle and soft lullaby for this inner child. After hearing the older instrumental version of this, Lena Panfilova offered to write lyrics and sing over it with her sister Irina, in Russian! And they soon came up with a stunningly beautiful melody and poetic lyrics for this music, and sent me the vocal tracks. I then worked on the mix to integrate their singing, hopefully to everyone's satisfaction. I sped the original music up a bit, reduced the volume on the original instrumental melody track to give space for their singing, and did serious EQ changes to accommodate their wide vocal range on the music. I hope you enjoy our collaborative offering.

Music written by Eduard, singing by Lena&Irina, lyrics by Lena&Irina, final mixing by Eduard, artwork by Eduard

Many many thanks to Lena for patiently listening to mix after mix, and helping me showcase and capture the clarity and nuance of their Russian singing.

You can find other wonderful music by Lena and Irina here.

Lyrics

English Translation:
There... there the sweet smells of our childhood float by
There... there the garden blossoms
There... the lights sparkle across our carefree years

...Dawn brings the soft pink light...
There... there is no dark deceit

There... our soul is unburdened
There... our world's at peace

There... the sails of our dreams catch the wind
And carry us away again
Bravely crossing swells
With a peaceful confidence

There is no sadness
There is no dark deceit

There... the carnival of colors
There... the home port of our soul

There... the wind gently rocks the cradle of our dreams
There... our favorite toy comes to play with us
There... the lilac sunset glows
The sweet aroma of vanilla beckons
Water splashes playfully from the fountain
And the fresh dew dazzles our eyes
There is no limit to our dreams
The brilliant sunshine stretches out forever

There is grandmother's soft ball of yarn
The wool still holds the warmth of her hands
After so many years, the yarn is still perfect
Tying us to the past forever

Once again I go back there... and close the door behind me
I go back there... and close the door behind me.

glad you checked it out
Very glad you came to listen, I was wondering what you might think of this, Jack. This was indeed a great collaboration, and as always, it pushed me into learning even more about mixing and placement. They pre-mixed and pre-panned their vox into a single track, so it was interesting to melt that over the music and get everything to remain clear. And it only took me 6 takes! :-) They were very patient with me.

Well I started
to leave a great comment... got distracted then lost it cause I refreshed the browser...

Ok this is very stunning and wonderful. My nit is contrary to Paul I found the primary vocals a little too loud in the headphones... Almost piercing at times. I would have enjoyed them backed down a little so I could hear your wonderful music better.

Still Drak... impressive as expected!!! Great job!

do I LOOK like I know what I'm doing?
Mark, your ears are great, and I love how you listen so attentively and can critique objectively. I was having a HECK of a time with the various frequencies and the warmth of the mix. One earlier mix I had increased the reverb on the vox a bit and rolled off the highs a bit to lower the "bite" you hear, and they played that version to another Russian, who said the vox were too muddy and muffled and they could not understand the words. I was losing a lot of the sibilance. So I lowered the reverb back a bit, and increased the bass/treble a bit, which made the vox clearer, but I agree there are a couple of "shrill" spots... if I knew more, I would go in and fix just those areas... I gotta go read up on the multi-band compressor maybe. Anyway, I still have a long way to go, but with your help here, I am learning a lot! Thank you always for your suggestions. Given the feedback and ideas, I may have to try a revamp of this.

Very interesting collab
You've achieved a gentle waltz that is dreamy and reflective, just as you explain in your notes. The mix of all elements is so nicely done, though I wish the vocals were just a tad more up front...Ending seems abruptly cut. Do you have enough left over to fade? I never thought Russian would be such a lyrical language, but as sung here, I have changed my mind entirely.
Peace.

Another great ear and set of thoughts
Paul, thank you too for listening and offering ideas. Just the kinds of thoughts I love getting and thinking about how to improve! As I said above, the mix was tricky here, and I was finally at the point where I thought "oh heck, I really should stop fiddling with it and POST IT!" I agree that the singing needs a little more "oomph", but I'm still looking for the "oomph" button on my mixing board. :-) I did boost their overall vocal track with a teeny bit of compression to try to increase the level without clipping, and that helped, but not enough. Also now that you are pointing it out, the ending DOES sound abrupt. I manually extended a few notes with the pencil tool to cradle their last phrase, but I think you are right, it needs a better ending. I could do the echo-thing I did earlier with their voices, and add some instrumentation to let the echo fade. Good idea. Russian does seem to be a surprisingly poetic and flowing language when sung like this... I love their lyrics and singing style! Thank you for your thoughts, as always!

Yep, that's her
And that CD she made with Metheny has some real beautiful songs.

There's something wonderful about lyrics we don't understand - guess it's that it comes out simply as pure sounds, like a musical instrument, so the mind isn't involved. . .

This is gorgeous. Excellent work on mixing the vocals into your original music. The harmonies, vocals and lyrics are beautiful. What a wonderful experience of collaboration. I agree with Paul about the ending - very abrupt to me, which doesn't seem to fit the mood of the piece at all. Thank you for sharing this experience and music with us.

I am sure the power of the vocals does something for it, but the music sounds so wonderfully ethnic in its quality as well. This is just a phenomenal job by the vocalists . . . oh and the writer and producer didn't do such a shabby job either (hee hee).

tricky balance...
Hi Richard, glad you like the music and singing so much, thank you for the comments! And also thank you for your thoughts on the vox... I know there is some magic mixing to get them to fit in a little better to the mix, and someday I will know more and can do better with balancing them. But your ear, and suggestion that it still isn't quite perfect is very helpful to me, and makes me strive to learn and do better! I'll keep pushing toward those elusive "great mixes", with your comments and ideas, thank you!

Makes me want to go to bed... (About time too!)

The mix is very good. Had to listen on phones to hear if the voices were too loud or just perfect (hardly the other way around), and I think you got it quite right. There is always the risk of separating the two but here they are still one organic piece. Well done.

(So now you translate Russian too??! What next...)

Thanks for sharing all this talent.

It is PAST your bed time, young man!
Trying to mix their voices into the music, and blend them, but keep the words distinct and understandable was tricky. They spoke the words clearly as they sang, so that made it much easier. But on one of the mixes, I had too much room reverb, and they couldn't understand the words, so I took that way way back down again. I am happy to know that you feel the mix is now a good balance.

As for translating Russian, I cannot take that much credit for it. Lena did the initial translation (transliteration) of the lyrics, and I just worked on the English wording to smooth it out and make it more evocative and poetic (checking with her to make sure that I stayed close to her meaning.) So, NO, I cannot read and translate from Russian :-)

Thank you as always for listening and commenting, Henrik!

Magical

This has your usual precision, drak--your pieces are always so perfectly constructed. I suppose you approach writing music with the same patience and attention to detail that you bring to writing code. That said, your music doesn't lack warmth. The harp(?) here has this delicate crystalline quality that's quite beautiful. I also love what Lena and Irina brought to this. It's such a treat when the right talents come together and elevate a piece to another plane. Great stuff.:)

this was fun work
I do tend to agonize and spend lots of time on things... which is one of the reasons why I don't crank out music very fast. Luckily I am better at computer software, so I can do that a little faster, and it pays :-)

The "Harp" is actually some synth sound I constructed by fiddling with knobs on a GarageBand synth... and it was a bit harsh early on, and I softened it some... but "ic42" really likes those plucks and bell sounds, which do give a crystal clear feel to things, glad you like that too!

Thanks for stopping in, Andy.

Sisters
have voices that blend in interesting way. My mother and aunt used to sing together, and it's special to hear voices that are genetically related, but just a bit different.

Lovely tune and charming arrangement. The occasional extra vocal snippets are cool.

@Paul Page: the vocals more upfront? Are you kidding? Only the echo effects could be more pronounced, although leaving them subliminal like this has something too.

No, I'd say the vocals are quite clear enough. In fact, the rest of the arrangement is starting to sound a bit thin. That's probably also because that plucked string sound is not very fat. I would have used some thicker midrange sounds to glue it together.

Oh, there is something bass-like but real low range is missing. Of course not every song needs a rumbling bass, but there is a kick drum that is a bit much exposed without other low frequencies to connect to.

Hey, just nitpicking. Mostly this is a lovely collaboration and great sounding result.

bring me your tired, your poor, your nitpicks!
I live for nitpicks, and listen attentively to your thoughts, Victor, thanks! Glad you like the little aural candy I sprinkled, I definitely did not want to overdo the special echo-effects, but wanted to give a feel of echos of the past. And your ear did pick up me rolling off some frequencies in my backing tracks to insure room for their voices... I probably did a little too much of that... I really lowered the midrange in the music. And I totally agree with you about bass, this needs a little more substantive grounding, now that you mention it. Great helpful thoughts, I will try to incorporate those as I continue along this path of learning. And I'm happy to know that overall, you like the piece!

They are not MJers... yet :)
I forgot to post a link to their music page, but have fixed that error... you can find them up in the description now! They are very talented pianists and singers... and when we were working out the collab idea, they asked if I wanted them to sing in English or Russian, and I did NOT have to think, I immediately wrote them and asked them to write/sing in Russian, and I am so glad they did. I appreciate your ear and thoughts too here. I know different people want to pick out different things in the music, but overall, everyone's suggestions are helping guide me into better mixing habits. So thank you very much for your thoughts on this. And most of the kudos go to Lena and Irina, they really made this beautiful.

Lots of Translation
Luckily Lena & Irina wrote the Russian AND English lyrics, and I just worked on massaging the English to be more poetic and still convey the meaning they had. This required me to bother them with lots of questions, which they graciously answered, so the English is quite close to their succinct Russian poetry and imagery. I played it for a Russian software engineer I work with, and although she's a classical opera nut (like me), she really liked it too. I look forward to hearing what your Russian friends think! But doesn't this just sound beautiful, especially with them singing?

Interesting.......
I have not listened to much Russian, but I have always thought that the language is very artistic and Poetic. The singing is fantastic, and i choose not to read the English translation, and just let this performance live on in its russian language. I think that you have given the vocals the right amount of presence in the mix. There are some very interesting changes during the song that i fancy a lot. Another favorite!

Well Magnus, I think it is perfectly OK to listen to this in Russian, and let their voices sing to your heart without translation. I am happy that you like the movement of the music as well. - talk about "lost in translation" :) I love the synth backing and slippery chord changes. Russian has always been (like Arabic) a language that I love the sound of, but can't understand a word (although I did hear "baboushka in there I'm sure). Welcome to paradise, Now you can never leave :-) I love this place. Thank you for enjoying my musical tangents, I enjoyed your first post. Welcome to Macjams.

i love russian vibrato! :0
it IS a stunningly beautiful melody! and talk about poetic lyrics:
"the carnival of colors/the home port of our soul" ooooooooooooo!
i like the 2 distinct voices and their complimentary colors - the matched vocal phrases are a dead give away that these gals are sisters. and it all sits so nicely inside your beautiful bowl of sound, eduard. your music is delicate balanced and sensitive with its own magical power here. oh yeah- you 3 have a winner with this one.
thank you!

Sisters...
Countries apart, but instantly recognizable :-) Thank you for coming over to listen, Anne, I am always interested to know what might tickle your fancy. Lena & Irina came up with the melody & harmonies, and they wrote the lyrics in Russian and a first pass in English. I carefully "tweaked" the English translation to be a little more vivid and poetic, but not all that much, and I checked with them to make sure my changes still kept the meaning they had... so I can honestly say that those lines you like so well, are a lot of THEM, and a little bit of ME. But the music is me :-) I'm very excited to know you enjoyed it, thank you! Being the big SISTERS fan that I am :-)

Here's a great compliment... thank you Carla, glad you love the music, the Russian singing, and the concept. And, it is good to know that the "Big Eduard/Little Eduard" artwork is OK too... the imagery invoked by their lyrics really begs for a video with images of grandma rocking and sunrises etc etc, but that's a bit beyond my means just now, so we will let the movie play in your head :-)

Ed Hannifin said 2891 days ago (November 18th, 2009)
I love the lyrics....
...even in translation, they're evocative...

And as so many people have noted, harmony singing from family members can make for a very neat blend, and it certainly does here...

I think an indication that this might take to another mix is that it may not be translating as well as it might to different people's systems. So Paul hears the vocals needing to come up, Vic definitely doesn't, and they fit about right for me. I'm not sure I'm with Vic in terms of the song needing bass, per se, (although I can imagine that really working) but what I think it does need is warming up. The lyric is such that I think the vibe of the music has to be warm and comforting. For me, that could happen with some more warmth in the upper bass or lower midrange. I also suspect that the voices themselves could be blended and enhanced so as to produce a warmer timbre. Some of the synth stuff seems a little plinky, and I think that's fine and I also think it will work better if offset with something lower and fuller. I hear some synth elements that seem to have depth, but on my headphones they seem a little distant. I'm not sure what to offer as an idea, but on my system the ending does seem a little abrupt. Maybe just a subtle but overhanging reverb tail might round it out.

All of which is to say that the song itself is really strong, and the instrumental and vocal elements, the bones of the piece, are great, and the thing that may benefit both is just to get a mix that brings their qualities forward no matter how they're heard.

Very neat, though. Can't remember the last time I heard one of yours, Eduard. Plainly my fault...

Ed

The lyrics are thought-provoking
I agree! Thank you for dropping in and offering your thoughts here, exactly the ideas and suggestions I eat up and love to work with. Because of your helpful suggestions, and those of Paul, Shay, Victor... I think I need to revisit this soon and use all your prodding to do an even better mix of this (I wore out poor Lena by having her critique 6 different revisions as I adjusted different things over a couple of weeks.) But I think your help and suggestions here have given me ideas of what to work on to warm the vocals more without muddying them, give more presence to some of the synths, and to fix up the ending a bit. Thank you again for such an attentive ear and time to offer your wisdom, I appreciate it a great deal!

Ochen Chorosho!!
As a lapsed Russian major, I really appreciated not just the nice melody and engaging harmonies here, but also the (to me) unusual choice of language:) For what it's worth, mix balance was good on my computer speakers; I might pull back the vocals a tiny tiny bit (for my system).

I remember that word, embarrassingly, from "Clockwork Orange" decades ago, not a good place to learn Russian :-) Thank you VERY much for your thoughts on the mix, very helpful! This has such a wonderful combination of
qualities - an easy flow like a raft down the sunlit river of memories - joyful, wistful, warm and with a tinge of loss. To achieve all that musically with such grace and directness of composition is quite remarkable - every note is there for a reason. They all contribute.

Lovely collab, a dload for sure.

Congrats to all involved, inner children and outer adults.

As for the trials with EQing and such - I think you have a fine mix, but I'll be the first to admit much ignorance in this area. But hey, I may not know art, but I know what I like.....

Take care,

Swoosh!!
I've seen your dragon swooshing around chat many times and thought it was time to investigate!
This is beautiful. Slightly haunting music which is then backed up by the vocal.
Has a very lonely dreamy quality to it which comes as a combination of the music and the unfamiliarity of the the foreign words. This to me makes it a very captivating piece.
The subtle change at about 1.22 was beautiful.
big thumbs up!

what a treat!
Well Hello Ed, I'm Eduard :-) I'm glad you found it captivating... I think the ladies did a superlative job elevating this to heights I could never take it! Thank you for stopping by, and pointing out specifics that worked for you, this is very valuable feedback for me, as I'm just learning all this as I go! I am now off to return the favor and hear something from you!

Yay!
I'm very glad you are hanging out here Sylvia, the place is enriched by your presence. I hope you received the big long comment I gave you on your "Bolero-like" piece before you took it down, I really liked that one. And thank you for listening to and commenting on this collaballad :-) We had fun working on this together.

Yay!
It's very nice of you to say that Edouard. Yes I did see your comment, and I did reply. But maybe I was too quick on the trigger and you didn't see it. The danger of making rash decisions at 4:00 a.m.!!!!!!

beautiful
I love the way the vocals fit so well with the music, and strangely enough, the ladies singing in Russian really works.

stretching the ears here
One thing I love about Macjams, I always find new stuff that I wouldn't normally think to listen to... and I wind up liking it! Thank you for stopping by and checking this intriguing ballad, I had great fun working with the Russian Sisters together to make this.

Wow that's really incredible
You guys obviously worked incredibly hard on the production of this song.

I don't even care that I don't understand the lyrics. The harmonies are beautiful and soaring.

This is really quite outstanding.

Curse of the perfectionists
Yes, a lot of work went into the creation and mix (and remix, and remix) of this, until we were all satisfied enough with the result (after a couple of months!) And after the wonderful critiques I have gotten on this, I have gone back and made an update to fix some things AGAIN! ;-) So glad you checked this out and told us you enjoyed it so much... and the lyrics are translated into English up in the description, if you want to cheat and read along!

Beautiful
Not understanding a stitch of Russian makes me realize that the human voice is a wonderful instrument, which you have captured wonderfully! I like the melody and the timber of the voices, i do wish i could have heard the other music just a bit more...but who am I to say, im still learning the wonderful world of recording. This is one for the iPod as well, I enjoyed listening to it the first time and i feel i will enjoy it time and time again....Great Job!

Lullaby for the Inner Child
Great vocs & harmonies. I don't understand Russian, but it doesn't matter. Deft touch on the production to bring out the vocals. I can appreciate the message. William Wordsworth said "the child is the father of the man", and at least every now and then you have to listen to papa

listening to papa...
A nice twist on the same sentiment, gave me a smile. I've since tinkered with the mix a little more to fix a couple of things brought up here, but the Russian sisters like this one best, so I shall sit on my remix for now. Thank you for the nod on the mix, this was tricky, but I am slowly learning about things with people like you lending an ear and a thought, thank you!

You singers really are magic
I really appreciate singing, especially since I have tried to sing and cannot do it. These two ladies did such a wonderful job with this, both the lyrics and the singing. Thank you for your ears on the mix (no compression used! :-) I am very happy to know you think it sounds good, and glad to offer goose-pimples with the music!

Whoa!
Dude! Man that was rich and comfy. Like being wrapped by a soft blanket. The instrumentation was spectacular and singing was beautiful. I dare say this was epic! What a treat! Some of the best I've heard recently. Kudos and bows of respect to everyone! This is rare but I really have no critique except that maybe the vocals are just a touch hot (not much though). Again, really nice work!

Warm blanket music...
Probably the perfect kind, certainly apropos for this subject matter! Thank you for the kind words on the music... aren't Lena and Irina's voices to-die-for? Great critique on the mix, I struggled with it and wanted to keep them clear, but I think you are right, the singing is a touch to loud. I have a newer mix where I was able to EQ a better hole in the music bed, and nestled the vox down a little more snugly. Thank you again, Adam!

No language barrier to art and music
Some wonderful vocal builds and passionate lows together with the 'music box' synths and the saucy little extras playing in the background make this a total musical experience. Russian is such a sexy language and I know I shouldn't say that as I read the beauty and innocence of those lyrics. Well worth all the work involved - Jaws - mmm! loved it

sexy is ok with me...
I think I know what you meant, that is, there's an allure, a drawing in, as if by a spell... which works in a child-like way as well as an adult way. Perhaps sensitive and passionate? Anyway, I still love what magic Lena and Irina wove here, in lyrics and singing. Glad to hear you liked the backing supporting music too, that was fun to write! Thank you for listening and offering your thoughts on this.
