Description
A song about Father Time seems appropriate as another year draws to a close.

I'm very grateful that my friend Daniel (http://www.macjams.com/artist/PlatonicLust) asked me to sing to his original song, and allowed me to add all sorts of instrumental embellishments, too.

It's been awhile since I've done a folk tune--but the genre is one I very much enjoy. So thanks, Daniel, for the opportunity to sing with you on this!

Original song/lyrics/guitar/vocals--PlatonicLust
All other instrumentals/vocals/production--Mystified

*a special thanks to Bryn for mastering the final version :)

Lyrics
Walk through the forests and over the meadows,
Stroll through the hills, Father Time.
Never a pause just to sniff at the flowers,
Or smile at the summer sunshine.

Old men they curse you; the young wish you'd hurry,
But your ears are deaf to their cries.
You set the pace there's no race--mustn't scurry,
So cruel to the world's crying eyes.

Where did you go? ( x 3 )

Where did you go? ( x 3 )

Time always marching the pace never changing,
For some too fast, others too slow;
So easy to lose you but never to find you,
We often ask where did you go?

Where are you going, oh old man of legend,
Why have you left me behind?
I struggle to follow seeing only your footsteps,
A vague trail is all I can find.

Where did you go?

Hi Feter!
Thanks so much for your comments.
Folk music is what I learned to sing harmonies to...so it's no wonder I keep coming back to it! (And yes...the 'coffee house fest' was a blast to do, too.)
Thanks again for listening!

Great collab
excellent vocals and the perfect backing - really like the cello and flute - are they keyed? Beautiful arrangement.

Hi bud :)
Thank you for listening and commenting! I tried to update the "Software" section, above, but it's not showing up--so here it is:
I used Jam Pack World: tin whistle, percussion, and Jam Pack Orchestra violins. The cello is the Fitch cello (that I got here at MJs), and I played all parts on my MAudio midi controller.
So yes, those parts are keyed.
:)

VERY tough...
...to sing this melody with all its skips and steps, but you do it beautifully. This is such a perfect "folk" song that harkens back to the mid 60s: evocative lyrics and a melody that is hard to forget. I am always amazed at how well collaborations turn out when folks are committed to the material.
Peace.

Hi Paul
There's something so natural about singing in the folk style, and it's such a basic expression. I'll have to give my Dad credit for that--as he's the one who first taught me how to sing harmonies to the folk songs he played.
Daniel, of course, gets the creidt for such a fine song to sing to in the first place! (Thanks, Daniel!)

sweet...
Wonderful music writing here, and Cat, your singing seems really well-suited to THIS genre too. This sounds a little like the old band "Renaissance" in some ways. You have some difficult note-jumps in that melody, and you just kept hitting them dead-on. Very nice work, you two!

this sounds like mysti does rebsie!

very nice my dear...your voice is amazing in that it sits just as wonderfully on acoustic guitars as it does over synth pads and stuff like that. I think this is really sweet.

Your collaborator here is wonderful as well, nice composition, and a good sounding recording, and i havent listened thru the nice phones yet...looking forward.

Hey z!
Thanks for the nice comments. A reference to Rebsie is a high compliment, indeed.
I have to admit, throughout the 80's and 90's I listened to a lot of Celtic music, including Clannad, Altan, Relativity and others. I guess it was only a matter of time until 'my inner Celt' was revealed ;)

Ed Hannifin said 2749 days ago (November 15th, 2009)
First of all...
I really like this song...

I'm a big fan of folk style 3/4 time....

Both melody and lyrics are very strong. I like the blend of the male and female vocals on this...

Fran already said, 'Mysti does Rebsie", and that's certainly on my mind... this just sounds in the Brit-folk-rock realm... You've even got a collaborator named Daniel... Simply EVERYONE is doing it...

Meaning nothing bad by this, on my headphones this sounds like it could take to a few tweaks in the mix, just getting things balanced and out of each other's way and such.... maybe a couple of spots of EQ....

And I say that because I really like this... It's also really in the style of things that I do and that I take to....

So... any chance of a chord sheet, or do I have to figure it out myself??

Ed
Mystified said 2748 days ago (November 16th, 2009)
Hi Ed!
Thanks for taking the time to listen and leave a comment!
Considering that I listened to a whole lot of Classical, New Age, Soundtracks and Celtic music during the 80's and 90's I'm surprised it's taken me this *long* to get around to doing a Celtic-Folk song! (I've done plenty of the other styles in the past four years...) It's nice to finally round out my 'most listened-to genres' and get them all on my artist page ;)

Another interesting note is that I crossed paths with my collaborator well before I joined MJs and started making my own music.
You just never know....

As for a chord sheet...you'll have to take that up with Daniel. He's the talent behind the original song :)

Thanks again for listening!
