Description
Well, it's been awhile. 3 months since I posted a new song, and I've been working on this piece for all that time. I love it but it's been a monster. After a lot of frustration and stress and discouragement, I finally gave up on trying to use the EastWest Symphony, Logic Express and all the other new toys I've gotten in the past few months. I've decided that trying to work my way through several learning curves while in the middle of a complicated composition is NOT a good idea. So, this is Garageband and the Apple Jam Packs at about the best I could do with them.

Since I played French Horn for nearly half of my life, it seemed time to write a piece featuring horns.

This is a long one, and meant to be sort of sunk into. It was very much influenced by the music of Thomas Newman, who I've been listening to a lot lately - specifically his soundtracks to American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, and Meet Joe Black. Gorgeous stuff.

Thanks to magnatone for many listens and feedback.

(oh, and the picture is a hubble photo of the swan nebula)

interesting
I love this and I love that you've done this all with GB. The french horn stuff sounds really nice. I was thinking that the piano could be a bit more prominent, perhaps. But it's really all quite lovely.
Maybe you could open this in Logic Express and remix it? And substitute the EW Symphony stuff, since I think the sounds might even be better? Just as a way to learn more about Logic? That's how I figured it out...

Ah...that little coda is really really sweet! Folks, you've got to stick around the full 6 minutes!

thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your thoughts! you have an excellent suggestion there and I will certainly give it a try. jumping into a new DAW with a song that doesn't have the urgency of "needing to be done" sounds like a much better plan. and thanks for the encouragement for the whole 6 minutes! i think people should stick around too!

no pressure...
Yeah, it's just interesting to see how a song you made in GB looks like in the Logic interface. It should open up pretty much intact and then you can play around with the different options in terms of reverbs and buss effects and stuff. In fact I think it's a good way to build songs, use the ease of GB to start a song and just use Logic for the final polish. No need to have the complications of the interface stop up the creative flow, which is your particular forte.

Loving this. Awesome when the piano and woodwinds kick in. Love the rests and evolving sections. Beautiful measure by measure and at the whole structure level.

My brother, my musical mentor, played French Horn and I've always loved the instrument. This whole piece feels French Horn-like: muted but tonally pure.

Beautiful last sequence.

I hear the inspiration, I can't imagine the perspiration it takes to compose something this
seamless and evocative.

Loveliness in sound...
I love film music for the reason that you can visualize with it--and there is plenty to visualize here, with such depth and breadth as you've created. Serene and yet expansive (the photo art you chose is just perfect).
I could also image a sunrise, its sweeping curtain of golden light reaching out to touch and inspire and build possibilities for a new day.

Thank you for creating and for sharing this :)

Lovely
Thomas Newman is mah boy! He's my fave composer, so I can relate to being inspired by him. This is really a wonderful piece as is, but I'd be interested in hearing what it would sound like if you re-orchestrated with the EastWest library once you get the hang of it. Again, this is quite something.:)

So many things
to recommend this beautiful composition. The subtle changes in texture, segue to piano, and, of course, those horns! There is a simple majesty you have created here, Shay, that just draws the listener into a peaceful, serene setting. Your sense of orchestration is right on the money and works in every instance. I love the half-minute fade that gently brings the whole piece to an end. Yet I, too, feel that I'd love to hear this with your fancy plug-ins and hope you will come back and revisit this wonderful music when you've mastered them. I totally empathize with the learning curve. I'm mostly still stuck on page one of just about everything I own. ... Oh, one last thought: you could have made "Deep Majesty" an over-the-top film score, but you (wisely) decided to keep it clean and subtle. It is breathless that way. Congratulations.
Peace.

love the new picture! :D your comments are thoughtful and spot on, especially the final thought. lol....there is an entire minute more of music that was originally the ending of this song that got big and loud and WAYYYYY over-the-top, but i ultimately decided to end small instead. I'm very glad that I did, it really kept the piece to the mood i was originally wanting to create. and yes, I don't think this one will let go of me until I re-mix it using the EastWest. I'll make sure to let everyone hear it when I'm done. Thank you Paul!

would you ever guess that it's been VERY difficult finding a good digital horn sample? what i used here is actually the tuba from the Apple Symphony Jam Pack. it has a much nicer, rounder sound than the french horn samples. anyway, i really spent quite a bit of time on the horns in this - there are 4, I wrote most of the horn sections for a quartet. I'm very happy to hear that it sounds good to you. thank you for your very kind words. glad you stopped by!

Deep's a good word here...
It's a very sonorous composition, with a nice blend to the way the instruments are twined... The mix is subtle and sensitive...

I totally get it about stepping back from the multi-learning curve, AND I'd love to hear this revisited sometime as your Logic and East/West chops get settled in so that this is played with the absolutely best instrumental sound samples you can get. Just 'cause it's good, and with every step up in quality more of what you've got going here will reveal itself...

I like the coda, too. I stayed the whole six minutes 'cause I just do whatever Jim tells me to do. I'm like that....

A professional composition, played with majesty and feel, the dynamics are perfect, each note perfectly placed, when your piano comes in it just moves to a new level of beauty. French Horn
I love ... LOVE the French Horn. I like the sax, but my most fav instrument in the world to listen too is the French Horn, which makes this song so sensitive to that instrumentation and you as a Fr. It is a flat fact that you have outgrown the limitations of some of your software (hand hardware), but that is what makes this piece all the more of an accomplishment. Hi Shay.......
It's heady stuff.......You've moved seemlessly from true American earth music to American-styled Cosmic Epics. To me there's no getting away from your compositions sounding 'American'.

You and Paul F Page capture some of this magical 'American' feel or essence in some of your compositions. I love it. It sits there with Copeland and Barber, in its roots, orchestration and (of course) spirit, though not in imitation of their style.

Can't wait for more magic......

Take care.

wow. you've completely floored me with your comments. to be likened to paul page, copeland and barber is more than an honor. I think you are absolutely right that there is a distinct american style. i was certainly exposed to a lot of it throughout my life so it's not surprising that it makes itself heard in my compositions. i've always loved the openness and warmth of what i consider the "american" sound. i am flattered that you hear some of that in my music. thank you very much for your kind words. good to see you!

I can definitely hear the Thomas Newman influence (who happens to be one of my favs as well - I loved American Beauty and Road to Perdition), especially in the last minute or so when the piano gently eases back in to close the piece. OK, now I have read everyone's comments. Hmm, lots of great comments and I would say I agree with it all, and (and what I absolutely love about Newman's composing), your touch is amazing. It is as light as a feather, and subtle, but it sets your composition apart and makes it special. Me - I bang on the keys. You - touch them, ever so gently, and the result is wonderful. You are improving with each piece you complete, and finally - 3 months - well, true art takes time and can not be rushed. Job well done, Shay - Sig.

Full and fine and beautifully paced. I would LOVE to be able to write/orchestrate like this, and I KNOW I haven't really heard it yet (even though I listened twice). So, I will happily take a download!

This is something to be very proud of.

Love,

MoM

I don't know ......
... what I could say here that hasn't already been said .... as I am late to the party .... I started to listen to this last night (and IBO .. as he interrupted my listen with his insistent skyping !!! HAHAHAHA ) ... but I did save it to return tonight and give it a proper listen ..... and much as the stuff I do is so basic and simple ... I do have a deep appreciation of "real" music .. and shay you are one of the people who know how to make "real" music ...... and this is lovely ... deep ... involved .. and as I can hear - well thought out and as you (although didn't come right out and say) ... maybe just intimated at ..... worked and struggled with ... you can relax now - it came out GREAT !!!!!

Deep Majesty
I can hear this as a backdrop to a fantasy epic, when all is still peaceful. The characters are riding through a sunny dell with the towering mountains in the distance. Really beautiful stuff. I can't imagine how difficult it is to compose something like this.

You know - when i listen to the songs on MacJams with all the guitars and vocals and effects - I just can't even begin to imagine how those are conceived and executed. We are a diverse group of talents here! I always love it when listeners share the images the music evokes for them. Thank you!

Smoooth and rich ....
like a really well put together thing that's been put together ..er really well. It is obvious that it has been beautifully crafted and shaped and the result is aurally delightful. Three months, wow, that is dedication and it shows..Really most excellent...I'm not even wise cracking...well a bit...French Horn as well,is that not the one that you shove your hand up the muzzle whilst playing....or am I deluded ?

Macjams is certainly graced by your enormous talent.

Your music tends to connect with our deepest feelings and we are left, subtly moved, as if an angel had wisped past us.

Beautiful Orchestration
This is a wonderful piece. You have squeezed every last ounce of expressiveness out of that JamPack (not always easy) and have created a great piece. Love the orchestration and the poignant harmonies. I look forward to hearing the piece with using a better sample library (if you can get around to it) :-)

I don't
know if you went through the grief I've been through with East West Orchestral stuff. But it is one of the most buggiest software I've ever used. But the Apple Jam Packs sound terrific, but I think the most important part of all is the person that uses them and you do a terrific job. So many various part used in this! Glad to hear someone who has the gift to work such beauty and majesty. Love how you obtain that echoey feel towards three fourths of the way through! Just lovely ! The whole piece is sublime !

Way to Go !

Shay, you get some of the most amazing, intense, articulate and well-deserved comments (and compliments) on MacJams. Your work is stunning and, easy for me to say, worth every drop of the blood, sweat and tears you put into it. Deep bows and deeper thanks.

Instant centering music
What a gorgeous intro. Lots of space (pardon the pun) to let things develop. As the orchestration develops there is a real tenderness to the piece; an unhurried story that wants to be told in its own way. Yes, I can sink way into this... And the ending is sublime - simply stated, full of impact.

I fully agree about wrestling with the packages, and especially Logic. I keep thinking, 'why can't I just express what I want without learning all this stuff' - the answer is obvious but the frustration remains all the same.

You made the right call - better to have some (really lovely) expression rather than have the inspiration get tied up into technical knots.

Take care,
Doug

PS - love the Eagle Nebula photo - gets me every time.

Great writing
Hi, this music is very well written and, as said in many posts, has tremendous "feeling" to the instrumentation. The only thing to my ear is that the "too electronic" garageband induced sound of the instruments takes away from the beauty of the composition. It would be wonderful to hear it with upgraded software generating more realistic natural instrument sounds (at least to my ear!). Tx for the masterpiece.
