Ye Mariners All

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Ye Mariners All is a traditional song sung from a publican's perspective luring sailors on shore leave to spend all their dough productively indulging in the pleasures of ale. This is a fairly recent live recording of Relig Oran (one of the bands I play with) and whilst the song is played on traditional instruments of one kind or another it's with a distinctly contemporary twist.

This is a straight mixing desk recording and not a studio mix - consequently it doesn't fully reflect the live sound. And I would like to point out that I had no idea that we were being recorded at the time!

The picture is a publicity shot showing masks made by Andy the band's percussionist.

Jem - bouzouki and vocal

Lyrics
Oh, ye mariners all, as you pass by
Call in and drink if you are dry
Come spend, my lads, your money brisk
And pop your nose in a jug of this

Oh, ye mariners all, if you've half a crown
You're welcome all for to sit down
Come spend, my lads, your money brisk
And pop your nose in a jug of this

Oh, ye gentlemen all, as you pass by
Call in and drink if you are dry
Call in and drink, think naught amiss
And pop your nose in a jug of this

And now I'm old and can scarcely drawl
Have an old grey beard and a head that's bald
Fell my desire, fulfil my bliss
A pretty girl and a jug of this

Oh, when I'm in my grave and dead
And all my sorrows are past and fled
Transform me then into a fish
And let me swim in a jug of this

Oh, ye mariners all, as you pass by
Call in and drink if you are dry
Come spend, my lads, your money brisk
And pop your nose in a jug of thi

I had a version of this...
...by John Renbourn Group...

Very crisp recording, as mixing board mixes can tend to be, but not in a bad way... I like it when the deeper drum hits come in... And the balance of instruments is very good...

I like your fiddle lines, especially in the instrumental bit about three or three and a half minutes in.... Nice rhythmic playing from everyone...

One of the better mixes
A number of tracks were recorded at this gig but in most the balance between instruments could be better and the fiddle suffers I think because it has a strong acoustic presence and doesn't need much from the PA.

Glad you liked it - I'll check out the JR version.

Cheers

Are you...
...under one of those masks? And if so, which one?
Komrade K said 2827 days ago (November 22nd, 2009)
That would be telling...
Actually I'm not under any of them - it's from a couple of line-ups ago but the advantage of this photo is that it doesn't matter who's in the band we can still go on using it... unless the number of members changes of course.

Thank goodness

...we don't wear them live, they get quite hot and uncomfortable - besides which I'd probably keep bashing it against the side of the fiddle when playing.

Glad you enjoyed this and thanks for giving it a listen.

Delicious...
Really nice twist on this straight-up (or bottom's up?) tale, and as always, well played, love your fiddle work... and yes, the recording is a little dry, but doesn't detract at all from the energy and spirited (pun intended) singing. K.K.Kudos!

The Sea
Fantastic!
I can see the sailors returning to port, and spending all their money on forbidden pleasures.
All artist blend well.

The sea
I always see the lyrics as a kind of advert for a tavern and place of ill-repute with a grim subtext in that the sailors are being encouraged to forget about the future (returning to the privations of life at sea). Our version gets quite gothic which I think is wholly appropriate.

So which is you?
Great song and well played.

Nice use of drones and the introduction of the lower pitched drum really lifts it and then it just motors home.

I'm enjoying this
Getting good desk mixes seems a lost art, although you have found it here to some extent Martyn. Love a celtic bouzouki. The lower drum sound does pick things up when it comes in. I'd love to sit with a pint or three and listen to this live.
Thanks for this little bit of insight into KK Live.

to hear you playing live and hopefully will one day. This is great fun and the perfect compliment to a pint.
I didn't read the lyrics and thought he was singing 'pop your nose in a jug of piss' - sorry, but it did grab my attention.
Superb solo Martyn.

Live recording
I won't comment on recording quality, since it's hard to make studio quality sound live.

A friend of mine is a great live musician. The whole crowd gets in a trance and dances when his band plays. However, I don't really like his studio recordings, since they are basically live performances done in a studio. And while harping on one riff for 10 minutes is great to sweep a dancing crowd along, it doesn't really work when you're listening to a cd in your living room.

Get my drift?

'Firefly' and 'Flook'
Reminded me of the 'Firefly' soundtrack and 'Flook'. Everything - the energy and good times you must have had playing this - come across wonderfully. You can imagine that this could sound even better live, but that's meant as a compliment since this is already great fun to listen to. Nice background story too - love it when a band can perform live and sound this good 'unplugged'.

Thank you Mr P
The night we recorded this some guy with very long hair insisted on dancing wildly and head banging (which is an unusual experience for a folk band!) After each song he would shout "you are gods!" which of course we are... ;-)

Good solid tradional maritime fare
Love the energy you have here - a very tight sound, with a great feel for your subject matter. The authenticity of your delivery brings power to the music, and your violin at times has an almost hurdy-gurdy tone, especially at the end.

When I was growing up on the east coast of Canada there were plenty of traditional songs of the sea, drinking, and the struggles and joys of life in general. This certainly reconnects me with that kind of feeling.

Kudos all round,
Doug

This line-up has done a lot of live playing now and this particular song has an improvised element which enables us to play off one another (and I prefer this to numbers which are very tightly arranged). Thanks for the great comments!
