I'm gonna feel so right (remix/remastered)

Description
Thanks to everybody that left a comment in the previous version of this song. I thought I could post a new mp3 file on the same place, but it's not allowed, so I had to create this new one. The previous version is here.

I wasn't very happy with the mix and the mastering in the previous one. It didn't sound too bad, but... I don't know, sometimes it sounds like in a pipe. Let me know which one sounds better for you. I'm still not sure. Mixing/mastering is not easy! ;-)

A tasty riff based song with some sugar. Some happy accidents may surprise you as they surprised me. Besides that, you can find quite similar things in the radio now. It sounds like a mix of almost all my influences. May be there's something interesting in the mix anyway.

As usual I struggled with lyrics and the voice lines. I didn't want to scream all over the song. That would be somewhat obvious, so I tried a non-violence style to see what could happen.

The chorus words came out while singing over the chords trying to find a melody/harmony; I wasn't thinking what I was saying (that's evident because who could sing those words over that music?), but I liked it and may be an ironic twist to the story (that I didn't have at the time, but I knew it wasn't going to be a happy song). What you hear is the first take of those voices.

For the verses it was harder. I copied/pasted a continuous 10 min track of the bass line, put that in a CD and sang anything on top of it while driving to/from work. If something interesting came up, I would record that with a cheap mp3 player/recorder I have. I think it's not the last time I'll use this method...

The words of the first verse are almost the same I mumbled without thinking. That verse set the tone of the song, but I didn't know what to do after that. The rest of the idea of the song came while I was in alpha (naturally induced sleeping).

Don't ask me what the lyrics mean, but it sounds a lot like my work. That's the lighter interpretation I could give. Not a cheering up song definitively. The good thing, at least for me, is that I could never listen to this song if I were already depressed: it's too loud.

Lyrics
I'm gonna feel so right

Have you ever gone through the lonely trail?
Have you gone through those fields you walk on nails?
How you're feeling now all through these fields?
Is it feeling like sore soul disease?

So Have you gone all through the fog that hides your crazy dreams?
Where silent faces barely appear as soon as they speak,
Just to be swallowed like a sock by their own growing mouths?
I'm gonna sleep I need to stop this nightmare now

I'm gonna feel so right

(enter trance area)

Wake up...

(awakening guitar solo)

I'd like to dream of memories of sand and ocean talk.
Of walking forests, smell of smoke and looking shooting stars.
I'd like to dream this fog is gone and now I'm free to fly.
But now I dream of lonely trails, where silent shades pass by.

I'm gonna feel so right (just give me a little time)

(feel right harmony)

(replay for real life emulation)

The difference?
This is still a throbbing tune, the previous mix seemed exceptional to me, however the artist knows his vision and how the final cut should sound. You are correct about the screaming, then it would be like the others. Your creation is a memorable one! Still RADIO READY!

:: Still a Powerful Performance ::

strong power
late night city dreams, eat at the shell we call our mind. it slowly crumbles around us as we scramble to catch the falling shards. the last piece of sanity falls, and we awaken.

great singing voice, and nice guitar work. it is difficult to tame the overdriven guitar, and lay in drums and vocals and have it all clear... you mixed this well.

So kind of you to stop by.
Wow, that's a nice way to put what the lyrics say to you. I would like to have those words to write lyrics myself! ;-)
Distorted guitars are wild animals to mix. I think this is my best mix so far for this kind of tune (OK, the last time I tried was in a Tascam 4. GB helps a lot).

Specially, the first 3 chords of the chorus sound like that (could be also AIC). That's ok, I love them and we share some influences ;-)

My daughter listened...
she loves it too, and said it reminded her a LOT of "A Perfect Circle", one of the bands she really likes.

I like the industrial crunch, mixed with long despairing distorted guitar, and your cool singing voice (do I detect an accent there?) I agree that doing a death-metal scream over this would instantly relegate it to the mainstream has-been pile, but your clean vocal take on this is arresting. Really like the melodic parts sprinkled in there too.

ttfn,
Drakonis (again)

For sure. The problem is the owner of the accent never knows ;-)
Say thanks to your daughter, I really like those guys too. But I think this is still far from them. I'll try to get closer though.

The vocals in the chorus are a little buried on purpose. Let's say it's a characteristic of the genre ;-)

billykirsch said 2764 days ago (November 27th, 2009)
Thanks Bud
That space break was one of the happy accidents. In the embryonic stages of the song, this part was just a synth improv and I left it buried at the end and bottom of the project. Then I started to copy and paste parts into a verse-chorus structure and I forgot completely about it. When I played the song to see if all was right, this synth appeared on top of what should be a verse. I was so surprised. I like to think this part found a place for itself in the song. I didn't know what to do with it.

Heavy
Good mix. It covers the whole spectrum, is dense yet transparent.

My only remark would be that in the chorus the drum almost completely disappears apart from the cymbals. Is that a conscious decision to have almost no kick and snare there? I sort of miss them.
Check out my latest song called Betazoid
billykirsch said 2764 days ago (November 27th, 2009)
Yep
In the previous version drums were too loud so I cut them, perhaps too much. Too bad I can't post another file without creating yet another song with that pb fixed.
But it's a lesson learned now. Thanks a lot for noticing (and letting me know) about that.

jiguma said 2763 days ago (November 27th, 2009)
Vic sums it up
"dense yet transparent" - I could never have expressed it so succinctly. Reminds me instrumentally of Rammstein - my wife's favourite! I'd like to hear the vocals just a little louder in the mix, but that's a matter of taste only. I like the tangent into less heavy stuff around 2:20.
This is really good - I honestly didn't expect it to hold my interest in the first 3 or 4 bars, but you do this very well - both performance (love the Floydy soloing towards the end) and production are very good indeed.

Rammstein reference! One of my fav bands. Yeah, it sounds quite like them now that you mention it. I was thinking more about Korn, Linkin Park, or King Crimson when the riff came out. You know, those weird scales/modes (this riff happened to be locryan btw).

Stream of conciousness lyrics are married to a brooding, ominous alternative sound anchored by a heavy bass. Reminds me of AIC, but I think it's quite a bit better then their latest single. Huge sound saturates the stereo field, yet nothing gets lost. Excellent job

Guitars that reach for the sky
Solid drum and bass to play off, and the guitar sounds are great. Synth work at 2:05 takes us into a bit of a new space before the wall of guitar power raises up again. The vocals really work for me - a bit distant, with harmonies that makes them not quite there, not quite real - like in a fog, as you probably intend. Guitar solos (like after 4:15) have a really flowing lyrical quality that contrasts the power of the rest of the piece.

Great musicianship! Rock on!

So glad you took the time to listen and leave a comment, no matter the timing. Even better that you liked it! :-)
GB works fine for me by now. I'm fine with it's limitations so far (didn't do much anyway). There are a couple of things that sometimes I would like to try but it's not possible, like changes in tempo or time signatures. And it takes a quite some time to come up with a decent master using the standard and free AUs. Still learning many other things besides mixing and mastering (e.g. write songs ;-)
Michael, as a fan and admirer of your musical talent, I feel truly honored you left a comment. Thanks!

Check out my latest song called Everything
michael2 said 2724 days ago (January 5th, 2010)
hmmm
i bet there is a way to do that. you could always record the different parts one at a time in different GB files, do mixes on the parts and then just drop them all into another file to blend together. that sounds like a lot of work though. I also wonder if you can do all of your stuff at one speed/time signature, bounce to audio, then just change the speed/signature in GB and work on the other bits. if you're not using MIDI, it wouldn't make a difference what the tempo or metronome was set at after you recorded.

although I am betting that someone knows of a better method.

whoa
this is FANTASTIC! really well-mixed. killer in your face drums. a very very tasty guitar with plenty of grit all over it. the vocals are awesome, and well delivered. There is a contrast between gritty/dirty (with the drums and rhythm guitar) and very clean (with the vocals and lead guitar) that really works.

the only production comment I have is there appears to be a reverby veneer slathered over the entire track. it actually works with the song, just thought I'd bring it to your attention.

FANTASTIC. instant fave.

Thanks for the fave and the positive critics. I put a little bit of reberb in the mastering, trying not to affect the sound too much (followed the advice of moving back the slider when starting to hear it). Also there are reverbs in the voice, guitars, a little bit in the drums... I think the only thing I didn't put reverb is the bass :-)

It always impresses me to hear someone who knows how to use their voice as an instrument. I think it's cool when the lyrics are almost discernible like Kurt Cobain. Awesome mix. I thought the bridge towards the middle could have been smoother, though. The guitar faded and it felt like the end of the song. No biggy though, overall. This is a very well put together song, lyrically and musically. Thanks for the DL.
