Description
Hello fellow MacJammers. Here is another soaring piece. It was not my original intention to include this piece in the "soaring" series, but it just fits the theme so well that I have decided to include it after all. This piece continues down the path that my recent work had been taking me; I am continuing to work on my orchestration skills, and it is my second attempt at mastering using Ozone.

I appreciate you stopping by and listening to my work. I sincerely hope you enjoy this piece, and as always, please let me know what you think - good or not so good - it all helps in the end. Oh, if you can, listen with headphones.

Finally, Happy Holidays to all my friends here at MacJams!

I am not a big fan of the 80's clap either - I could've edited it out but, well, I didn't. Other than that I am so glad you liked the piece - thanks for stopping by and having a listen - Sig.

Wow
Very powerful intro, with a smooth change into the piano melody. Very well balanced, you put much time into the mix. The bridge in the middle caught me by surprise, so did that lead guitar!

Hi Steve
Nice to see you stopping by. I did spend many hours mixing this one - in fact by the time I was done the volume levels were so consistent I was worried that the song would lose all of its dynamics! Anyway, I am glad you liked it - your very nice comment are very much appreciated!

One of the things
I really enjoy about your posts Sigmund, is the way you use guitar against your orchestral backing tracks. I find the softer passages here more accessible - mainly piano and percussion. It seems a little that when the full strength orchestra comes in, there is a harshness in the sound - maybe too much compression? I've been on a long term battle trying to get my head around compression and use it without putting that unwanted edge on a song. Is that you playing bass, or midi? Whichever, it sounds very nicely done.
Very nice post.

Hi Neil
Glad you stopped by. I appreciate your time and your nice comments. As far as the harshness goes, unfortunately I know exactly what you are referring to. I believe it has something to do with compression, but I don't think I am over compressing - rather it is more like the low end gets lost amidst all the sound activity. It is a challenge I am continually working on; I think it has improved from my last post, but I still have a ways to go...I do feel complimented that such an accomplished bass player as you are wonders about the bass, which is midi by the way. Thanks! - Sig

Hi Sigmund!!! So great to hear a new upload from you - and this one is just wonderful. i love the orchestral touch in the first part that then leads to the main body of the song - very effective. as usual, your piano and guitar work are to notch and this piece truly does "soar" (like ALL of your music!) i always get ideas when i hear your stuff - glad to see you back around here!

Great stuff
The passages with piano / screaming guitar sound super.

My quibble is with the orchestral intro. It doesn't sound very orchestral to me, more like a keyboard player using strings sounds. Listen to some romantic composers and see how independent their string voices can get.

Otherwise much much much enjoyed.

Hello Vic
First thanks for stopping by - I appreciate your ears and your thoughtful comments. And, your candidness. To be honest at first I was a little disheartened by your comment - that's only cause I know how much time I put into those strings to perfect the sound, but I was focusing more on the sound of the strings, as opposed to what each instrument was playing. Obviously I have much work to do - and I am looking forward to my next endeavor. Thank you for your thoughts - it gives me much to think about and work on.

Sig,
Woah man! This is such a great mix of orchestral and mood setting instrumentation. Just a wonderful mix of elements inside a stunning composition. The contrast of the orchestra and the rock and the piano interlude is just so captivating. It keeps you waiting for the next transition. I haven't listened with the phones yet, but all sounds well in my reference monitors, good stereo image, EQ maybe a little bit hot on the high end, but mids and lows sound fine to me.
Ok, listened on the cans and the mix is much flatter there. Did you mix this using headphones?
Bravo! and Encore! Encore!

Hey Steve!
Thanks so much for stopping by for a listen. I use headphones for 90% of my work, but I have come to realize that mixes come out much more balanced with monitors as well as phones. I have also found that mixing with headphones tends to make my mixes sound muddier, so using both has helped a lot. And, Ozone is simply an awesome program for mastering - makes all the difference (thanks Michael House!) I very much appreciate your thoughtful comments - thanks again!

Always moving,
always interesting, and eminently beautiful Sigmund. Excellent dynamics and changes throughout this piece, my friend.

Just so you know, my Lady, Jeannie, stopped what she was doing, came into the studio and gushed over how beautiful this piece is.

I have to agree totally with her assessment. She is a big Yanni fan and said this is the equal to anything he has done, and it sounds like his style of music.

Again, I agree. Bravo Maestro

the guitar soars
Very nice work here... really love the piano and guitar work. The intro seemed a little... I'm not sure... I don't want to use the word "trite", but it seemed to be trying too hard to sound wistful... I guess I wanted it to be a little more fully orchestrated, just little counter-harmonies here and there. The strings sounded quite good, not too synthy in their attack. Anyway, overall, this was really nice, quite an enjoyable listen as always, and Happy Holidays to you too! When's your friend's soaring DVD coming out? :-)

Thanks for stopping by and having a listen - as always very much appreciated. OK so I need to work on my orchestrating. As far as the video goes, my friend had put it on hold earlier this year because he thought he was going to be moving. He recently told me things were back on as his plans to move have, at least for now, been put on hold. If he sticks to the new plan my guess would be a video in the early spring. Should be exciting - I'll keep you updated. Thanks again for your thoughful comments - much appreciated, Ed.

um....
who are you and what have you done with Sigmund? oh wait....THERE you are! wow sig...what a beauty. those opening strings are gorgeous - in fact - all throughout. you've created something epic here, with an exceptional cinematic feel. i love the movement back and forth between lush sweeping strings and the piano, with your guitar nestled sweetly in the middle. Your melodies and chord progressions in this are just beautiful. i love the small touches here and there that really fill the whole piece out - synths, voices, bells and atmospheric percussion.

2 nits have I - the opening strings are gorgeous in all respects except that they feel a little choppy to me, jerky, like not quite as smooth in the transitions from note to note. there are tricks for that i'd be happy to share with you, unless you were going for that sound, than i'll shut up.

the ending, while i LOVE the idea of it...i would really have loved the piano to resolve. but that's just my ear.

Really a superb piece of music, my friend. excellent work and well worth the wait.

This is really wonderful
the only thing I would suggest is perhaps softening the attack of the strings at the beginning - or finding some way to make them feel more organic. I don't know the secret - just a humble observation. But don't get me wrong the overall composition and playing is stunning. Really nice integration of acoustic and electric voices.

Parichayaka said 2841 days ago (December 14th, 2009)
and Happy Holidays to you!
There is a very gentle, building up to a more dynamic flow throughout this track. The piano has a soft touch with nice accents. It sounds like you got a lot of joy from creating this and that sentiment comes through. And after a few minutes it's also obvious why you included it in your 'soaring' series. I particularly like the softer parts, including the one towards the end. I always say I know, but by extending the release of the strings just a bit, it'll sound a touch more organic when changing the chords; also quick chord progressions tend to sound like strings played on piano (which is what most of have to do:). Anyways, very enjoyable from the beginning to the end.

Wonderful
Your note choice on piano is delicate, sure, just right. Leaving spaces for reverie, to place oneself. This reminds me of Kitaro, the way he would soar in and out of epic expanse and intimate understatement. I totally dig it, from the writing to the arrangement. The opening string pad used is kind of too synthy, slight too brittle for the music I think, and I wished a real orchestra or a more real feel could've been used for that aspect. But that doesn't take away from my enjoyment. An excellent track.

To the sky...
I was reveling in the mood set by your strings in the intro thinking - ya, this is great cinematic composing, and then at 0:57 you launch into this gorgeous piano backed with a subtle beat. It morphs again twice quickly with the electric guitar that adds tension, then the sweeping stings are back and the whole mood changes. I think your photo is most appropriate since this reminds me of how clouds morph and shift as they pass by. You have really mastered the flow from one thematic element to another here. It takes me through a shift in mood each turn and that makes for a really immersive listening experience.

Thanks for letting it be Dloaded!

And it' a very solid professional sound coming from you. I'm amazed at how your music gives such a soaring feeling, even though you point out that the theme for this is just that. The piano and keys in general has this floating feeling, and is performed with such elegance.

Great Piece!
Is that a synth bass? Are you using a pitch bend wheel to emulate fretless bass phrasing? Really well done. Excellent use of dynamics. Great guitar solo. Lush Strings! Great Arrangement!

Hey there Andrew
Thanks for stopping by for a listen - much appreciated! To answer your question, GB has a fretless bass which, when played at a higher velocity (124-127) will automatically give you a two semitone slide down. It is a very cool sound indeed. I am grateful for the nice thoughtful comments - thanks again -

gorgeous
I like the space of the soundstage, not too wide, and the pad is perfect for this type of song, very nice indeed!

mmmmm...
this is great! Nice use of midi instruments - you keep the characteristics of each instrument very clear and separate. Is the guitar a midi sound too? It sounds very authentic. Would sound great in a movie...

Hey Smokey
The guitar is for real, the drums are loops, and everything else is played on keys. Thanks for stopping by for a listen, and I appreciate the nice comments as well.
Thanks!

Hi Sig....
Reminds me a little of Enigma in places. I really like the wandering melody in this one. Geez, I didn't know you were such a pianist! How do I keep missing these things? How long have you been playing? The Brian May guitar at 3 and a half if wonderful. I like the ending as well with the aaahs, the bass and the drums. Thanks for mentioning this one. I don't know about the 80s clap....lol.
