Description
Last week I downloaded some samples of the Tanpura (the Indian drone accompaniment instrument). It starts the song and continues to the end. I also added some keyed Boldt Sitar lines along with the drums that were built by transposing a melody loop into orchestral and pop percussion. The rest is my Danelectro guitar and Peavey bass.
This song is dedicated to my wife Lisa - and the artwork is a painting from her show last spring. Here's a link to her gallery: http//www.feat/...

Lyrics
You came to me so slowly
I could barely see you move
Before I knew what happened
We were sharing one breath

The years flowed one on another
One bed became our home
Children crying in the next room
I wanted chaos – I got my wish

New Direction
shows versatility in an artist. Maybe I am wrong but it seems like you are crossing over into new territory. Also with hearing the song that I am working on now and the Eastern influence on the percussion makes me think so.Short and sweet... I could say more, but I have run out of words for the day.

Shades of...
Ravi Shankar. Bud, you are really spreading your wings in these last several posts. This one is really hypnotic, the pleasant, rhythmical beat of the drone keeping the whole number together so well. Is there an umbiri or wooden flute that could take off from this and spin out a hollow, haunting melody? I hear it... This is SO short. I wish it had lasted for about 5 minutes. The great sound could easily stand that much if not more. ... I do like the lyrics, but can't understand them. Maybe I'm not meant to, but then, what's the point? Here, too, I can "hear" these words whispered and perhaps echoed or even with a track of them played backwards against your instrumentation. There are so many possibilities and you have suggested so much by your inventive/creative way of looking at these sounds. ... Oh, the picture is wonderful! Any chance of posting (somewhere) a retrospective of Lisa's art? ... It is perfect for this song.
You keep surprising me with your interests and your ability to put so many elements together. Wow.

I appreciate you wanting to hear a longer version of this - but I made a point of keeping it short on purpose. I've been trying to make my point and express the range of a song as succinctly as possible for a while now. Two reasons. One - I like to paint pictures as opposed to telling stories - and two - a good three minute pop song is perfection in my book. Also - there are other songs to be heard and just so much time.

I think I carry something like this around in my head a lot of the time. I'm a sucker for drones and tremolo guitars. If George Harrison were still here I'd love to hear him work with T.Bone Burnett. Of course he did get to work with Roy Orbison - but I think they had the wrong producer.

Nice 'n' trippy, especially while viewing Lisa's art as I listened. Glad you got your wish... may your little chaos bugs flourish! Sounds like you two have found your ways to tame the vibe, though, with your respective A/V habits, which merge in one breath here.

tempura? love that stuff
i'm not big into indian sounds, for whatever reason i just don't swing toward the east. but this is cool. i like the way the tune sucks you into the guitar with the bass, it cooks you slowly... Also really really like the vocals, the layered low and high mumble. gives it a new wave feel while at the same time staying earthy and honest.

Ya know - Knock On Wood is what inspired
the lyrics to this song. Decided it was time to pay some respect to the woman I love in a song. Thanks for getting the ball rolling.
BTW - New Wave music was honest - it was the padded shoulders and asymmetrical haircuts that you couldn't trust.

Video Fashion Killed the Audio Star
About Bud's comment on New Wave music being honest but not the fashion: Agreed. The music industry's tactics in pushing stupid video plots that don't relate to the songs is what ruined the music industry. It'd have been better if music video content were directed by the artists. Plain footage of bands, or "storylines" based on the songs would be better than what transpired.

Low in the mix on this one: seems to contribute to the Velvet vibe and the general low-key intensity--even if we're trading off intelligibility here. Really nice job integrating the samples with the percussion and your guitar playing! Realy enjoyed it.

The Tanpura instrument really gives your music a mystical sound - doesn't sound Eastern to me, more psychedelic and trippy - like just closing your eyes and going with it. So I closed my eyes, and I went with it - and I liked it! Thank you for sharing your vision -

Glad to hear you again, Bud!
Hey Bud, you were one of my favorite MJ artists when I was active here back in 2007, and I'm pleased to hear that you are still making excellent music. Great Sitar! I'm not sure if I have that software instrument in my collection or not, but I want to use it now. Your vocals have a low gravelly thing, like Lou Reed or something - a style that wouldnt work in other kinds of music but works perfectly here. I really like whatever percussion suddenly comes in during the guitar solo. You have a gift for writing understated lyrics.
