Description

The picture above is my cat Mango. She is a holy TERROR who tears around the house each morning, talking to herself and anyone who cares to listen.

Mango is also one of the sweetest cats I've known - friendly and loving and constantly full of a playful energy. Just like this song!

This is just a silly little romp for piano and percussion ensemble.

I recently watched "Touch the Sound" which is a great documentary on the amazing percussionist Evelyn Glennie. This song was very much inspired by her.

Ugh, Mangos...
But since it is Shay, I know that unlike the fruit, I'll really enjoy this... and besides, it is about a wacky cat!

Percussion and rhythms elude me, and I am entranced by those who can come up with things like this. Really pretty melody, definitely "rompy", and perfectly orchestrated. But... have you been talking to that "Karen" person lately, only this sounds more like something SHE would play on the piano... next thing you know, Karen will be writing languidly beautiful New Age piano pieces, and then what will we do? :-)

this really is a headphone delight. really spatially aware piece of work...lots of discrete things going on; it's like the dawn chorus in the rainforest; every insect/bird/monkey has its moment to call its mate....and so this arrangement allows everything to stand out. excellent finish on the piano. nice.

	Imagine... ...a small child with severe ADD running through the house pretending to be an airplane, vrooming away with their lips, and you have the human equivalent of Mango doing her thing. I love this raucous romp and am continuously blown away by what happens when you manage to capture the percussion bouncing through your head.

You keep the beat
perfectly with your backing percussion ensemble. It is quite pleasant as the piece unfolds, the piano coming in more as another percussion instrument than a melodic one. The nice changes in harmonic center are always satisfying and that beginning fade at 3:00 or so is just the perfect ending to this rhythmic ride. I do wonder, though, if something truly melodic might take this whole piece up just a few notches. I'm thinking a flute or soprano recorder going off in some free improvisation above the rhythm and harmonic base that you have so eloquently set down already. Just a thought for possible consideration. ... Truly an enjoyable mix of percussion instruments that are mixed to a "T".

First I must comment that the picture reminds me of the scene in Wizard of Oz when the house falls on the wicked witch of the...north(?). Intentional? Hmm. So as this piece begins I am immediately reminded of Thomas Newman again, although that does not last through the entire song. Another interesting thing I just noticed as the song ended and I restarted, is how different the beginning and end sound. You keep this moving with the very ambitious percussion. I note key changes (2 in all, right?) but you manage to keep the theme constant, which is very cool and very well done. Another cool thing is you use the key shift to boost the dynamics of the piece. This is an interesting, creative breakaway from some of your other stuff, and I think you did a great job with it. Nice work, Shay

The playfulness here is infectious
Your light touch in this piece really brings it to life, and the variety of percussion makes for a unique kind of orchestration that gives this piece its own special signature. Your piano work is still brilliant, its dance with the percussion is deftly handled, and I know where drak is coming from :o) -

I just listened to the video of the TED talk that Evelyn gave on how to listen and it is fascinating for anyone to contemplate and embody. Thanks to the pointer to her as well!
