Description
In late October, I was in Seattle’s acoustically awesome Benaroya Hall, listening to Ben Folds “backed” by the Seattle Symphony. The whole concert was really terrific, but the encores were jaw-droppingly breathtaking. He’s an amazing pianist, and hearing his music orchestrated with a live, full contingent of symphonic instruments really inspired me.
Shortly thereafter, I started working out this song on the piano. Throughout the creation of the piano music and then the orchestration that followed, I tried to hold onto the inspiration I came home with the night I heard Ben Folds tear it up with the Seattle Symphony. There was a certain feeling for me that night during the encores, of just being enveloped in this huge music, that I tried to bring forth in the big, extended build of this song. I don’t know that I even remotely achieved that lofty goal, but I sure had fun trying!
This song got it's name because of some odd, still unresolved technical difficulties that eventually resulted in calling in the Apple engineers. They are still trying to figure out what is causing a couple of interesting bugs, and for awhile it looked like the project would have to be shelved until an answer was found. Eventually I discovered a workaround that allowed me to continue orchestrating, and thus the song was rescued from the ashes.
Many thanks to Shay (kassia), for the multitude of listens and thoughtful critique, and to Jack (davisamerica) for listening to an early version and encouraging me to “go for it”.
