Description

What I did: I recorded a set of lyrics for an open collab.

What Bud did: He added a drum track, hand claps, bass, and two tracks of acoustic slide guitar – the only loops used were the one drum track and a vinyl scratch track. He triple tracked my voice with different eq’s and blended them together to get the sound you hear. Finally, he used overdrive, eq, and compression in mastering.
To me, it sounds as if I was singing in a smoky roadhouse.
I hope you like it and aren't sick of my song, yet.

My only suggestion for next time
would be to sing to a beat or basic chord progression - allowing yourself freedom within the structure to improvise. But having that structure and (60 beats per minute say - key of G) would open doors for you and help you collaborators work with the track. This is unique in it's own way because it is not tidy and resolved - but there are many ways to do things. If you use GarageBand - magic band is a good tool to use.

I think
the vocals would be more effective if you varied a bit more with breathy style and then occasionally pounced on some parts. You seem to be hitting the notes quite hard most of the time. This is just a stylistic preference for me on female blues vocals. Alot of the old great blues singers like Holiday sang just like you are doing it. Its definitely a retro feel which I think you guys are going for with the old timey effects.

I understand.
I had lyrics I sang acapella just to get them here. I was prepared to re sing to a new melody or music but several people worked around what I did. The style is my doing and is probably what I fall back to when there is no music. I am learning as I go along. It is easier to vary the attack when I'm listening to the music than when it is just inside my head. :)
