tikipod w/awigze and APOD

Description
This track has a winding past that started with Michael2's heartbeat track that he brought to APOD as the seed of a collaboration that ended up producing six tracks that were posted to various profiles and collected by Particledots on the APOD EP. One of the tracks not posted was one I created called tikipod. Along the way different tracks were created by APOD that are used as a sound bed here. I then added percussion, mallet instruments, bass, and finally keyed Flugelhorn.

All that ws missing was the Wayne Shorter to my attempt at Miles Davis. Who else but Andy (awigze) to fill those shoes. So I sent the track off to him just as his kitchen was being renovated and he was spending some time in a hotel - all the while managing to blow some beautiful lines on this. I ended up with two sax tracks and a turtle shell rhythm track that states itself before the first sax intro and then tucks back into the mix.
Andy is a great guy to work with - I hope you enjoy this little cocktail.

I've given up Sax
Going to go fulltime into Turtle Shell. Had a blast with this Bud. I am now and always will be your turtle shell guy,. you just call on me and I am there! I really liked the final mix on this- everything is so bud like in how the parts rest on each other. I am really fortunate to have collaborated with the folks on the APOD farm. Bryn and Michael, although I don't know your exact contribution to the song, I could still sense your talents on this. Thanks for letting me hang out with the cool kids again!

Hey Anady - what can I say?
You nailed it again - just brilliant! M2 and PD are deeply embedded in this track which would not be what it is without everyone's contributions. Thanks all around.

I'm with Feter
on this being well thought out,,, that percussion is so original and out of context with the other instruments and yet it all goes so well together..... great participation by all and an excellent mix, regards M

Credit for percussion and mallets goes to
Thomas Newman - the great composer for film and TV. I first discovered his work American Beauty. He has had a big influence on me - though I rarely get to show it. I got lucky this time. Add Andy, M2 and Particledots and it's hard to go wrong.

Very nice!
This does seem sort of cinematic. I just picked up the soundtrack to Finding Forester that has a nice selection of various eras of Miles on it, and it has a DJ remix of In A Silent Way that this reminds me of in the sort of feel of it. The flugelhorn is sort of neat in being a sort of Miles stand in here and does a servicable job. Really nicely put together! Andy does a great Wayne Shorter here. Wayne Shorter's a Buddhist!

So Wayne plays on the one I guess
I could only approximate Miles during his spare note period which suited my primitive keyboard skills. It was all a plot to get Andy to show me up with his great playing.

All cool
and Andy, wow. He must not have time to put on his shoes these days, with so many asking for his talented sax playing. I also asked him to collab the same time he was putting in the kitchen. I guess he works well under pressure. [grin] The sound bed is fascinating, and the additions sound like they were made for it. Kudos, guys.

Never too much AndySax
Doesn't sound like the kitchen sink was thrown into this, just the appropriate amount of rhythm and musical touches to give this class. M2, Bryn, Bud, excellent chilled soundbed... and Andy's additions are like the umbrella in the drink, perfect! Offbeat, exotic, but warm and intoxicating.

this sounds perfect
in its complexity & restraint both. A great listen, indeed reminiscent of Miles & Wayne. Other than the turtle shell, is this sampled percussion? sounds great in any case!

I like the sway in this...
...and I like the spacious, three dimensional quality to the mix... Lovely sax tone, and a really nicely done long fade....

bud said 2802 days ago (December 17th, 2009)
The mix is pretty elaborate and I'm glad it worked
for you. I created about 6 sub master mixes of different elements of the song with and without the flugelhorn and then gave each mix a different eq, reverb and placement left/right. Then the master that went to Andy was built by cutting and fading between the different sub masters. Once he was in everything got slightly tweaked - but not much. Andy played the fade basically to go with my mix and did a great job making it organic.

Acid Jazz
Hey Guys. Amazing collab. I am a BIG fan of Lounge and this hit my little tiki brain nugget right on the head. If you haven't heard DJ Crush and Toshinori Kondo the incredible Acid jazz trumpet player from Japan, you should look them up. Right up this smokey, funky alley. Well done. Beautiful production.

Almost a film noire in oceania kind of thing going on here. Cool, swaying, and laid back. Love the use of tuned percussion and the hot sax riffs that bop along to the lazy beat. Great work guys.

Clean
Very well put together! All the stuff that drives this forward (saxes/faux flugel) is top flight. The part that's slaying me, though, is the echo-y marimba stuff on the extreme right and left in the mix. You're making me nostalgic for bong hits.... The drums sound GREAT, btw.

Very Cool
Yes....as mentioned above, This is jungle jazz. you should have named this "swing of the jungle". I totally see lazy monkies swinging around on vines. Jungle animals huddled around a fire dancing lazily to the swing of the drum. I loved that bass in the first minute, very cool. Faved, i love stuff like this. Great work, all elements were well done.
