Instant Karma 1 - Whorls of Barsoom

Description
Imagine yourself on the surface of Mars watching the towering red dustdevils spinning slowly by in the reduced gravity while the weak Sun glows dimly in the sky.

This is a live improvisation using the Korg M3 in a single pass (no overdubs). All the different sounds are created with Karma (algorithmic arpeggiator) and are in response to what I am playing on the keyboard. Filter effects, sweeps and drum patterns are created through using the various performance controls. Everything you hear is coming directly from the M3 including all effects and reverbs) The only other treatment was recording it into Logic and using Ozone mastering plugin on the final recording. The Combi I used was called Dust Storm on Mars.

Them Programmers...
I can't take the credit for the mix, since those Korg programmers figured out the balance in the patch.:-) The use of Ozone though really perked up the sound and clarity. The thing is just a blast to play.

Hi Graham......
You can't beat a good bit of algorithmic programming. It's highly suited to Ambient soundscape production.

This mix is excellent and took me away from life on earth for a few minutes.

Have a great Chrimbo and New Year.

Take care.

Paul

How do they do that?
It's just amazing how the Karma engine works (mind boggling really). I just know that when I site down and play, incredible sounds come out of the keyboard. That patch in particular is just like a huge electronic sigh.

relaxing dreamtrip
This would be wonderful with one of Drakonis's animations.
Could just close one's eyes with this one and just go for the ride.
Very peaceable.
You really seemed connected with the flow of this one, as if the astronaut in control of the ship.
Didn't want this one to end.

enter...
into a beautiful world full of different colors and sounds. you really have a wonderful talent creating these soothing, engaging soundbeds that allow you to immerse yourself completely. i'm amazed at how you could do all that 'live' - besides the obvious technical progress those keyboards have made, it still takes a gifted musician with an intuitive sense for musical beauty to make is sounds like that. take as many months and years you like, as long as you keep posting music like this. on second thought...weeks would be better? :)

Wow, my "ic42" half really wants a Korg now :-) This is the kind of thing I have to think about for weeks to figure out how to flow and melt from one soundscape into another, and your talented knowledge of the Korg lets you create a spectacular atmosphere in organic real-time, this is really impressive, for both the man and the machine! I love the little down-bends starting at 6:39, especially. I'm bummed that this didn't make it into the Space-Race challenge, but something tells me there will be a second-annual one next Fall! I look forward to you attending and taking that one "by storm" :-)

Drakonis

fuk me
that is so mind blowing body numbing sounds from keys I heard in along time, this is what it would be like if i was on the surface of mars, I hope, instead of being probe by some alien dude.
very well done great job at creating a peaceful landscape, very well produced
thanks for making my day

Lush and beautiful sound!
Puts one in a mood no doubt. Fits the image of mars except the seagull sound and maybe their just a bit too loud for my taste. Very well done and mixed overall.
BTW, when I first saw the title I saw in my mind the words "Whores in Barrooms" (I do this all the time, bad eyesight.) I thought this was funny when I saw the real title.

Whorls of Barsoom
This is really awesome. I love the way it develops throughout. Keeps the ethereal nature but it builds and builds...slow enough so that it's not abrupt but enough to make it go somewhere. Very nice work.

intriguing
This is great. Don't ya love it when an improv begins and ends that way. Keyboards (technology) such as this makes you feel like this kind of stuff is going through your head all the time... and who's to say it isn't? Have always enjoyed your work and Happy Anniversary #5

barsoom
red light slowly filtering through the dust, with a celestial view unlike anything I've seen before. Graham, wonderful improv. Stellar restraint on holding back and introducing each new element of the patch in sequence. Some killer effects and sweeps in there.

Now then...
This is beautiful. Played in real time too. I think I know what I may want for Christmas: "Please dear, can I have a Korg M3?"

3.30 - high pitched synth sounds choice. 4.00 percussion comes in. Love the little shift at 7 minutes. Lovely layering of sounds and an excellent mix too. Very, very good. One to download. Thanks.

Wish List
This one was on mine too for over a year. Then my local music store unloaded it for a huge discount because it had been there for more than a year with no buyers (my area is pretty depressed economically and also very guitar/drums oriented). I think the serial number is 94!

Let me know....
...when you start composing/improvising your Jack Vance series....

I'm always happy when I see you've got something up, Graham. This is a stunning example of "the courage to be slow". Not only does the tune unfold, but every chord takes its time unfolding, sounding, and revealing its structure and overtones and reverberant field.... 'Rich' is a good word for it... Neat change-ups and tones in the last two minutes...

Ed

Spacey
and meditative. They should play this for Astronauts when they have to work "outside" in the space shuttle program. I remember feelings I had when I first saw Kubrick's 2001. Space is infinite and this was infinitely transplendant. Congrats on 5 years. Thanks. :)

Incredible solo performance
so often, flowing with the moment creates the best results - you just have too find the zone - something you've done really well here. You make it sound easy but I bet your synapses were firing up a storm during this.

I'm there
Space theme - score 1. Ambient - score 2. Very cool development and soundscape - Score 3/3 and it's a winner. I'm always impressed at the restraint composers show in letting a piece really breathe and grow. This is no exception. It's really gorgeous Graham, and I think captures well your theme. The addition of the beat just before the 4 minute mark takes this up to another level of interest without making it bound out of the starting gate. The delicacy and care in crafting make this a totally immersive experience.

Many thanks,
Doug

beautiful
I only partially understand everything you said in your song notes - learning synths is next on my list. The high synth calls that start around 3:00 have a whale-like song to them, and then the energy shifts into the percussion and movement so effortlessly. i love that this takes me on a full journey and I think the improv quality of your playing can really be felt in the shifting moods. excellent work graham.
