Description

This tune found me really. For a period of a couple of weeks during the final mixing of Grow Old with Me, Steve (tonestones) had taken the master to try and help me tweak the track. Shine was a very random "playing around...bored" session one afternoon. The song had other intentions. As I sat lurking one nite on line I watched 3 friends support each other. All they were doing was "being there". They couldn't "fix" anything .... they were just there. The first lyrics formed from that conversation. I see this happen quiet a lot actually on this site. Sometimes people call it being "cliquish" .... but I think not really. Each artist sent a box of magic for this tune and I have tried to find space for everyone to shine.
The mix is not perfect but the tune said it was time. This tune is dedicated to all of you here at MacJams ... and especially my brother Feter who has more than once pushed past his darkness to light mine.

what I love about you
is that you can take your direction from anywhere and turn it into something truly amazing. It does not seem to mater the project... you put so much into it and find such complementing talent to make every piece exceptional. Whether it is labelled being cliquish or being a friend.... Thanks for letting me be a part of this wonderful song. I love hearing these projects come together. Gail and Jack, you sound so good together, and Terry's voice is sublime, too. Mike, great drums. I really don't remember much about recording this- I mean, I can usually remember what was going thru my mind when I hear one of my parts played back, but not on this song.... I was thinking of Feter though and recall recording bits and pieces and the suggestion of the melody... there is something about this song- it's beyond me. Maureen is here listening. Maureen loves the voices and the singing. I think she likes the sax a little.

Yes, you all do shine here
Jack, as always, your subject matter and attention to detail are touching. As is the music. The vocals are superb, but then, we know who is singing here, and you cannot go wrong with them. Andy's sax work here, along with the bass and synths, take this to a Pink Floyd "Division Bell" sound, really good in my book. Excellent sentiment and performance, everyone! Mike's drums are crisp and perfect. Macjams is indeed a welcoming helpful place, letting everyone come and shine.

It's nice to feel appreciated and everything, and I do thank you for the sentiment, Andy. Just so long as everyone reading realizes that you were exaggerating! Let's be careful not to diminish the real talent here: from songwriting to mixing to vocals to mando to that awesome sax track ... I'll need to look up who contributed that part :-) .

As an aside - I wish I had known that there were going to be vocals to this one. My reference track was the electronic percussion track with bass and layers of keyboards. I would have played some things differently (most notably the bit at 4:06+). Then again, that's part of the thrill of a collab with Jack. It's like a box of chocolates. This one was yummy, and I'm thankful to have been invited along for the ride.

Well,
that was my third comment on this song and I gushed on everyone except you... but I realized it was the drums that made this song. So it's like a train with no wheels...without the drums that you produced... so - maybe a slight exaggeration on the 'we are nothing' part, but a vague reference to J. Lennon when he said, 'Before Elvis there was nothing.' It's always cool to be a part of a collab that you are a part of.... hmm, and they've all been with that Jack fella.....

Nice collab
I love how you work outside the square most of us inhabit Jack. It does sound like song from a show - as much in the mix as in the performance/s. It has an almost live sound about it - some excellent playing all round. Only nit is the lack of clarity sometimes in the production - always hard to overcome in a project such as this - not helped by the droning fuzz note in the chorus.
A terriffic accomplishment though to get so many people together for a song and for it to sound this good.

I think
This song begs to be a film soundtrack opener, like in a Bond flick. It has such an atmospheric feeling, almost like it's floating on warm water in a peaceful ocean, with the rumbling of waves and the wind gusting lightly as seagulls pass. The vocals and sax really highlight this track. Forgive me for saying this, but as I listen I'm waiting for some swirling symphonic strings to complement the synth ones; violins, violas, and basses never hurt a beautiful song!

It's a lovely tune and has great potential!

Just beautiful
That CHORUS coming out of the verse is wonderful! This is such an unusual song from nearly every angle: the choice of instruments (percussion) is kind of cross-ethnic to my ears; the vocal harmonies are enchanting (and entrancing); that sax solo just cuts through with enough bite to really perk things up (not that they needed it!); and the general arrangement and mix is stellar. This is one song I will listen to over and over again. Amazing work that is so beautifully recorded...(Oh that "shine" the 2nd time around with its little wobble is perfect.) Sorry I am so late getting to this, but glad I did.

Beautiful collaboration
The technical aspects of the mix are not what's important here. The CONCEPT is what makes this piece work so beautifully. The vocals, instrumentation, and symmetry of the composition itself make this number SHINE. How you've kept all these elements and personalities in order is just simply miraculous...and I am envious of such fine results from so many varied sources. Sorry it took me so long to listen to this, but I am glad I did find it.

don't know how I missed this. There's so much good music as of late. This is a sterling example. How you managed to integrate everyones performance into such a concise and imminently accessible track, kind of blows my mind. We're talking a lot of individual parts here, and yet to me its if you were all of one mind on this. So kudo's on the mixing duty and same to everyone who contributed. I felt real peace after listening.

OMG!!!
How on earth did I miss this back in December?

I love the way this song is peaceful, but at the same time almost overwhelmingly intense. To me, it's strongly suggestive of Pink Floyd and Bohinta, and maybe somewhat suggestive of Enigma and the Reasoning. And this is a good thing. A strong yin-yang thing you have going.

I also like the way you start off with a raw, unadorned instrumental section, then bring out the big guns. *wink* I would have suggested adding a synth pad if you hadn't done so already.

Admins, is there any way we can have a special button for "mostest mostest favoritest"? If so, I would use it on this one! *big grin*
