Description

This was a quick song to write and record, done in an afternoon ..... then I spent a week mixing the bloody thing. A bit of an experiment genre-wise (I figure it's almost Alt Pop), it's also experimental in that it's the first vocals I've done using the band's Presonus FireStudio. To me the vocals are much less harsh than usual, and with far more detail and depth - once my fees come in for recording a CD for a young local guy, I'll be buying the Presonus FireBox I think - thanks for the tip Lisa!

This track is all me - a couple of Seagull tracks, at least 3 Tele tracks, B3, Bass and midi drums. Lyrics are simple (mainly so I can remember them when doing it live) and melody is designed to be able to sing while playing bass. I'm pretty happy with it really - hope you like it.

	Don't Want To Talk About It Strong easily relatable hook. Love that bass line - holds down that bottom like an anchor on a battleship, and the guitars are a nice flavor up top. The instrumentation kind of fell together, and having a basic bassline helped a lot. I was recently asked to do a bass solo on a collab, and the middle section on this is an attempt to do just that. Lots of fun. I think the Presonus interface is a vast improvement on the old Behringer UB802 for vocals, but I still like the Behringer for guitars.

Thanks for dropping by. I very much appreciate that you enjoyed this, as I have a lot of time for the quality of your recordings. Interestingly, the vocals on the outro are the Behringer interface - so you get a bit of an idea of the difference between the two. The only thing I have to get my head around is a slight delay in the Presonus tracks - but I'll wait til I'm using my own Presonus before worrying too much about that.

Mixing is a bit of a black art to me - sometimes it seems to work pretty easily, and falls into place, but when you try to do something differently (and here I'm trying a new way of managing volume/compression) it gets a little tricky. Hopefully, what I've learnt here will be transferrable to other songs.

Another strong song from you Neil. Very cool guitar hook line going through the song. You keep making solid good pop/rock songs.

Your singing is good and seem to be in a good spot around the key of A. I bet you can push it even a bit higher and it might feel better for you to sing.

I think the harmonies you do might be a bit to close to the main vocal tone wise. You have a cool singing voice, but doing harmonies with yourself can be challenging because the voicing is so similar to the main vocal and the result can be a bitt "muddy" if you don't get them enough apart. Just an observation, and I probably notice because I have the same challenge myself;)

I really like it when I get constructive criticism like you have given here. I agree with you about the pitch - I'm tending to use a capo on 2 everytime I start a new song these days, but agree that at least one note, or maybe 2 notes higher might work better for my voice. I'll give it a try on the next new one.
The harmony thing is interesting - I tend to just sing a first harmony that comes naturally - I rarely plan it, just open my mouth and it happens. I often do the same with a second harmony. Maybe I should try doing three harmonies and cutting the middle one out some times. It would be interesting to see where that got me. I like having other people sing harmonies, but often even great harmonies don't sound quite what I want, and I'm loath to be too directive. Maybe next time we do a collab I'll get you to try a second harmony - I'm sure our voices would work well together.
Thanks again, I guess things are a little cold in Stavenger at the moment! It says -6C on my weather widget - I guess you have a nice warm house to relax in.

is the little footprints in the sand after a seagull has been wandering about :) OR, an acoustic guitar track using my Canadian Seagull 6 stringer :)

Quick is good
This is very nice, and the time spent mixing seems well spent. I love the guitar sound a lot. There's some funky stuff going just when you go into that instrumental bridge section like an out of tune note in the guitar or maybe that's just my funky hearing playing tricks on me. And yes the vocals are a lot warmer. I suspect the preamps in the Presonus are less harsh than what you were using (a Behringer mixer if I recall correctly) and that fixes something that was nagging at me about your vocal sound. Since your songs are pretty much vocally oriented (though with solid instrumental backing thoughout) this warmness and detail should make a difference in the overall impact of your songs in a big way. I like the close harmonies and the tightness of everything. It seems quite radio friendly in a nice way. Excellent!

pleased to see a comment from you here, and especially pleased with the comment about the difference in mic sound with the Presonus. I was also getting quite unhappy with the vocal sound I was getting through the little Behringer mixer I was using, and find this makes a big difference - BUT, I wasn't sure whether the difference was real or just imagined because I wanted it to be so. That's eased my mind a lot and I'll now buy the FireBox when I have enough in the "jiguma slush fund".
That note at the start of the instrumental is on the bass I think. It's one of those funny notes where sometimes it sounded a little off to me, but mostly it sounded right in an avante garde sort of way. It does draw attention to the fact that a bass solo is about to follow though. If this gets to the CD I think I'll make it sound right all the time :)

this groove is a free flowing river of sound - what joyful music!
vocally, i've never thought you come across harsh. i hear your voice as porous and diffused, not focused into a tight laser beam, but more spread out. that's what i've come to expect from you - and for me, it works. listening to this take with the firebox (i've got one, too), i wish i could say i hear a difference, but i'm not an audiophile, just your average on the street set of ears. i can't tell any difference, neil - you just sound great - no smoke from this sister. swell song!

I've been thinking for a while now - since we got back from Europe in September - that my vocals had a roughness that I wasn't really liking the sound of much. When we were rehearsing for our "big gig" in November, I was using a Shure SM58, and noticed that my voice sounded a lot smoother. This made me determined to try to figure out what the problem was - it was either the interface or the mic. I'm still kind of hoping it's the interface, as it will be much less expensive. to replace. I've been doing a little paid recording (as opposed to singing - I'm the sound guy) work lately, so hopefully will cover costs from that.
Are you getting a little lag from your Presonus? It's the only thing I didn't like about it, but may be just something I have to get used to.
I have another song just about ready and I'll use the Presonus again and see if I can notice any difference this time.

Written, recorded and all done in an afternoon.... There's a whole alien concept to my brain....

When I'm commenting on anything you do, we have to start from the assumption that I like everything, and then I just pick a thing or two to mention...

I like the trebly acoustic guitar bits up top with the thick bass tone beneath everything.... Your approach to bass is a good one for knitting things together... You've got an almost Vic Holman like combination of trebly chords with harmonized lines... Almost a nod to mid period Pretenders there, too....

Lyrically, the song is simple and pithy, says what it says... Great energy and directness.... Nice hook....

I think the thing I like best about this song is the thin Tele strum which gives it that upbeat happiness factor. I do think that your vox and warmer than on some previous tracks, but they still seem to be a bit loud in the mix. I know what you mean about the quick writing/tracking and the long hard mixing and mastering slog....I know it all too well, the day recording- the weeks of mixing. All your slaving paid off though, cool track!

This is really great! Poppy, throwaway, fun, great sound, what's not to like? I'm a little on the fence about the lead vocal: a big part of me wants to hear it build a little bit through the song to some extra energy at the end. But your vocal discipline throughout plus that ripping lead guitar can't be argued with, either. I'd really like to hear more like this one, please.

Neil, this is great. For all the guitars, it's still got an extremely clean and open feeling. Looks like somebody (not me) knows something about mastering here. Sometimes it's the (writing or performance) quickies that end up capturing the right mood.

	I missed this and don't know how! I'm a southern too and this smells like beach in summer. Light, easy going, warm nights, and ocean sunsets. Although the feeling of the lyrics is the one I used to get when the summer was gone (along with the pretty tourist girls ;-). Vocals sound crystal clear. Well, everything sound crystal clear. 	Nice seagulls Really, I love those rhythm guitars. About halfway through, this builds to be such an amazing rich sound and groove.
