Description

'And now for something completely different'... One of the gifts I received for Christmas was a ukulele (actually I just received it this past Friday). Here is my first offering on this little instrument. In keeping with the ukulele persona... A demo ditty that is a bit of a peaceful, easy song... something cheerful after a heavy week.
Hopefully you'll agree and enjoy this.

I occasionally find old Pop sheet music from the 30s through 50s that has ukulele chords rather than guitar chords. I am intrigued by the popularity the instrument once had. Maybe it had something to do with portability. You could take it to a party and whip it out when people got into the singing mood. Maybe singable music with heartfelt lyrics will come back someday. I only hear such songs at weddings and funerals.

THIS has made my morning! The uke always has (for me, at any rate) a certain emotional 'squishy-ness': irony always seems to be lurking. And the ambient sounds here (pages being turned, etc) certainly enhance that effect. Your lyrics read like you really mean them, though; so the net result is a deceptively simple song delivered with great emotional range. Bravo!

If I made MoM's morning...

then I am guilty of more than a contrived alliteration. Yeah, raw recording; I did a one take on the uke, not knowing where I was exactly going. I inadvertently changed the progression a little mid-way through. And singing it, I was winging it. I kept putting the lyrics down when I was scatting or whistling (neither of which were planned-- it was just a 'sound levels demo' and I needed to write more lyrics) and then thought "oh, let me sing some more here", grab the lyrics...

I don't advise this approach to song writing and recording, but it does give it an immediacy and live feel. I do hope you recover for your morning. Thanks.

Funny: I was on Oahu for the holidays and played my first uke, there. A Lanikai baritone. Couldn't get enough of it. Got back to the mainland and my wife got me a tenor as a late Christmas present.
We are uke brothers, my friend.
Isn't it great? And fits in an overhead!

Hey, Jack -- I just noticed this song in your sig line on the forum and naturally, I had to give it a listen. It's too bad you don't live near me because my ukulele club can always use new, talented members. We're growing so big now, too. There was a huge article in the paper about us and suddenly our ranks swelled to four times its size.

I love your song. Great job on a new instrument and it's impossible to resist those upbeat lyrics and charming vocal performance. Absolutely loved it, Jack. Woo hoo!
