Description
'And now for something completely different'... One of the gifts I received for Christmas was a ukulele (actually I just received it this past Friday). Here is my first offering on this little instrument. In keeping with the ukulele persona... A demo ditty that is a bit of a peaceful, easy song... something cheerful after a heavy week.
Hopefully you'll agree and enjoy this.

Lyrics
Do you believe in fairytales?
Do you dream of midnight sails?
Does your heart long for a home?

I can see the mountain tops
I can see the sun
I can hear a stream bubbling on...
Let me now drift away to a better place
Living in a land of love and grace.

Dave, nice to read your comments. The vocal is a bit strained in that the key is somewhat high for me, but the only chords I learned well enough to play this were in the key of C... :)

Uke 'em!
ALAS! Your ukulele is incredibly better sounding than mine. Nice light song that skips along merrily. I recommend you transpose it down two full steps. Or else change the high vocal ascents to descending. It will come across better. Best, Richard.

A uke a day....
keeps the ________ (fill in the blank) away! Hey, I had to sing this in a "too high" key. These are the first chords I learned well enough to play a song in (key of C). heheheh.... Just something light and fluffy for the heavy days and difficult ways.
Thanks Rich.

rage
I occasionally find old Pop sheet music from the 30s through 50s that has ukulele chords rather than guitar chords. I am intrigued by the popularity the instrument once had. Maybe it had something to do with portability. You could take it to a party and whip it out when people got into the singing mood. Maybe singable music with heartfelt lyrics will come back someday. I only hear such songs at weddings and funerals.

well Roxylee...

It's really just a little guitar with different (though simple) chord fingerings. Anyway it brings out the song in me. Fun. Nice to have you visit and I'm glad to be able to brighten your morning a bit.
Thanks,
Jack

Ukes are deceptive....
You're getting a very nice, clear tone from yours, Jack.

This is a good song. I like the melody and lyrics. You could work up a simple-to-big version of this that does a sort of "big chorus" at the end....

Dadai.2 said 2799 days ago (January 25th, 2010)
Thanks Ed...
for stopping in. When I starting strumming this uke it really go my in the mood for something like this. The melody and lyrics came about rather quickly. Just one of those things. If I can motivate myself, I like your idea.

Jack
MotherofMeursault said 2799 days ago (January 25th, 2010)
Now...
THIS has made my morning! The uke always has (for me, at any rate) a certain emotional 'squishy-ness': irony always seems to be lurking. And the ambient sounds here (pages being turned, etc) certainly enhance that effect. Your lyrics read like you really mean them, though; so the net result is a deceptively simple song delivered with great emotional range. Bravo!

MoM
Check out my latest song called Useful Idiots
Dadai.2 said 2799 days ago (January 25th, 2010)
If I made MoM's morning...

then I am guilty of more than a contrived alliteration. Yeah, raw recording; I did a one take on the uke, not knowing where I was exactly going. I inadvertently changed the progression a little mid-way through. And singing it, I was winging it. I kept putting the lyrics down when I was scatting or whistling (neither of which were planned-- it was just a 'sound levels demo' and I needed to write more lyrics) and then thought "oh, let me sing some more here", grab the lyrics...

I don't advise this approach to song writing and recording, but it does give it an immediacy and live feel. I do hope you recover for your morning. Thanks.

Ricardo... the thrilling days are gone, and probably weren't really all that thrilling (as you know too well). But sometimes I just want to stop all the heavy, heaving stuff going on and lighten up (now... there's a title for a song!) a little with something breezy and with a little nourishment tucked in. Thanks.

Funny: I was on Oahu for the holidays and played my first uke, there. A Lanikai baritone. Couldn't get enough of it. Got back to the mainland and my wife got me a tenor as a late Christmas present.

Hey, Jack -- I just noticed this song in your sig line on the forum and naturally, I had to give it a listen. It's too bad you don't live near me because my ukulele club can always use new, talented members. We're growing so big now, too.
