Description
Some years back I got a set of lyrics from Jack, (Davisamerica) and expanded on them till they eventually became this story. It’s kind of a lengthy tune, about a 6 ½ minute ride. But a bunch of your favorite Macjammers have banded together to take you on the scenic route, so it won’t seem that long.
That’s me Terry, (Davisamericatoo) up front doing all the yelling and strumming on an old Conquerer guitar. Those adorable background vocals, (and added theatrics) you’ll recognize as “Sister” Anne Cozean. Andy Wigzell “awigze” spiced it up nicely with his soulful sax. Neil Porter "jiguma" rolled it smoothly along with his bass. Fran Dagostino, “Ziti” gave us some really cool riffs playing “Smokey” (Ed Hannifin’s pampered Alvarez- Yarri guitar) running “direct to a POD with a very clean amp module” as he put it. Mike Watkins “Kevmikwa” gave us that jazzy beat that tends to leave you tapping your toes after the music’s stopped.
We all did our thing, threw it into Jack’s lap, and let him perform his mixing magic. I had a blast working with these artists. We hope you enjoy our song. Peace. Terry.

Lyrics
Table Five

I was struck with awe and wonder as that woman caught my eye
Glory be, Lord! How in thunder could I ever pass her by?
She was an angel waitin’ tables in a city with a jagged sky
I came rollin’ off the highway, sat myself down at table five.

As I looked through a tattered menu she said to me, “Can I see a smile?”
I said “Honey, if your name is in here, I got a grin that will stretch a mile.”
We got to talkin’ as she waited tables, but the real discussion was in our eyes
And it occurred to me I was in the presence of another as alone as I

She had the sadness of a highway, and opportunity drove on by
We like to gamble with the hilltop and go for what’s on the other side
She landed right here in a diner somewhere
And that’s how fate contrives, but what was happenin’ here
At table five?

We were strangers, careless with secrets. When hearts are searchin’ they open wide
And we were honest, like we were best friends, or maybe lovers who forget to lie
I had some sorrows that I had buried, and when I mentioned them at table five
She went to diggin’ up a dead man’s story, and made that dead man come alive

And the strangest thing was happenin’. I can’t explain it and will not try
There’ve been many passin’ women. I never thought I could make one cry
She wept at my words, and I rose like a bird
Her tears brought me to life right there
At table five

My head was spinnin’ like a radial tire, and for a moment, I was mesmerized
But out beyond this angel’s shoulder diesel trucks and cars kept whizzin’ by
So I keep wanderin’ endless highways; in and out of painted skies
A rollin’ load of restless yearnin’ burnin’ down that skyway line

I’m just a prisoner of the highway. I gotta be movin’ to do my time
And you’ll see me on the horizon, and hear that Chevrolet engine whine
It’ll all end somehow, but I sure can’t stop now
It must be on the next rise. It wasn’t back there
At table five

Has that touch....
...of the 'St. James Infirmary' feel to it, doesn't it? Sounds--and I mean this as complimentary--it should have been in Roger Rabbit.... A bit of camp noire....

Could be worked up in a sort of Dan Hicks way, too...

Everybody gets to shine on this one. Everyone's in the groove, nobody's feel falters. Bass, drums, sax, vocals, lead and background, guitar... It's all great...

The lyric structure is interesting, too, with long, long lines....

Recording and mix are all right in there. I think the recording of the drums is particularly live and lively in my headphones. Like the trades from sax and guitar.... They match tonally and phrase-a-ly really well...

Thanks Ed, and thanks for letting Smokey play. A lot of shining came from that direction. Long, long lines come from my being long winded. Glad you liked it.

A beauty
This is perfect! ("Poor, poor man..."! C'mon, you're killing me!) Everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE-- is ace on this. Good thing I have a strong ego, or I'd pack up my pathetic tent and slink away from this place after hearing this!

The easiest 6 1/2 minutes I've ever spent.

Thank you very much.

What can I say?
Just superb.

I love the differnt guitars that weave their way in and out, the backing vocals (silky and sleazy at the same time), the main vocals (delivered with just the right amount of insouciance without sounding careless), the fluid bass line and the rest of the backing.

What a great story as well.

Cheers

soooo smooth
you all slide into place like teens on a vinyl booth seat in a greasy spoon here... love Terry's lyrics/singing (the gentle "phasing" on his singing was about the only distraction I might bring up.) Anne's delicate touches are awesome as always, and Fran's careful playing, where he adds great sounds but never gets in the way, shows expert teamsmanship. Mike's drums splashy drums really keep this rolling, and Andy's sax just adds the perfect ornamentation along with Fran. Great work managing to merge all this talent into one MP3 and keep it all sparkly and distinct, Jack! This thing is superb. Love the intro/outtro. Thanks everyone!

Smooth is good.
Thanks Eduard. Yeah, everyone's input couldn't have been more perfect, (or is that "more better"). Jack did a masterful job on this musical collage, and I too was happy with the spontaneous feel at the start, and the "into the sunset" effect in the finale.

Fab collab
Your story captured well the ship passing in night nature of life. I loved the line "We were strangers, careless with secrets." We are often more apt to share our dreams and fears and locked darkness with strangers on bar stools, passengers sitting next to us on planes. Yet withhold those same fascinating details and inner truths.

I really enjoyed your vocals, all the little things you did with your voice, and the intimate edge in the sound. What a pleasure. Thanks for sharing both this wonderful collaboration as well as the joy behind it all.

Fantastic! This sounds like you are all

But all the musicians involved with this project are top-notch and the mixer ain't too shabby either!

Really good mixture of elements here -- blended together into a very pleasing whole.

Terry's voice with the swooning Sisters background, Master-MIke's clean clean drumming machine, Ziti a solid strum-miester and all leaving spaces to be filled like a cupcake with the amazing Candy-Cane-Andy. Tastefully mushed by Dr. FeelGood Jack.

SISTERS said 2763 days ago (January 29th, 2010)
Hey now - that was fun!
Terry - I salute your vocal style:
slightly ironic, and laid-back with a focused clarity that's perfect for this Traveler's Tale. "We got to talkin’ as she waited tables,
but the real discussion was in our eyes" I just LOVE that line.
Real Good Writing that was fun to hear unfold.

Andy's big deep blatts of sax and Fran's most excellent quavers at the chorus definitely ruffled my coffee-stained apron, and their outro was a thing of beauty, twining around each other divinely.

The chorus rocks! I always look forward to Neil's unique bass patterns - he cooks it for me there. Kevin beats us all into some semblance of submission - no small task. and Jack did a beautiful job using his NowWhoGoesWhereAndHowMuchForHowLong-O-Meter.
That little touch of highway at the end is just the ticket.

My compliments to all of us!

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it in it's earlier iterations. I've
been listening to this a lot while away on holiday, great track and your vocals are superb Terry with some wonderful lyrics.
A great feel to this song with some superb playing from everyone involved.

I commented on this when Jack quickly posted a test mix on his Radio Chuck page, can't remember what I said back then but I really love this song, great mix and a superb production.

Very much enjoyed.

Thanks, Andrew
This was quite an experience putting together. It's direction was questionable until this bunch started working on it. They made it happen. Glad you enjoyed it. T

Table 5
This popped up in a list of "More songs from ballad" and seeing who was playing I just had to have a listen. Glad I did. I love the way this rolls along. The backing is superb (those Ziti riffs are a treat). Lots of energy in the performance and plenty of variety. Anne's spoken words are fun! Excellent work!

Table Five had gone through a very gradual development by the time it was presented to this fine crew. It was my favorite child, and I trusted them completely with it. I was not disappointed. Each one added a part of themselves to this track, and that's where the magic comes from. I'll always be very grateful to them all. Thanks for listening and for the kind words.

MJ has enriched me.
What an idea, having a community of musicians! People may love your music but, find it hard to appreciate what goes into it. Music makers understand what makes us sweat. Thanks for dropping by and for the kind words.
