The Thin Man Dreams (MJRF2010)

Description

Thin Man Dreams was written for a friend, Rob, who I’d started out playing music with when I was at university, and with whom I lost contact as we got older. We always had mutual friends and kept up with what each other was doing in a round about kind of way as we got older. Rob died at the start of 2005.

We used to practice at his place in Oatley, on the banks of a little inlet on Sydney’s George’s River – usually involving partners, friends of the band, various stimulants and inevitable cups of tea. These rehearsals (we only ever did a few gigs) were a part of my personal “dreamtime” – young and free and playing some pretty nice music with good people.

Rob was one of the good guys - he didn't really fit in all the time, but he was a gentle, talented soul. This is tribute to his life and the great days we used to spend playing music at his place in Oatley, Sydney when we were young. Not quite a band, but a lot more than a jam.

I wrote this in a few days after I first heard about Rob’s death. This is one of the first songs I wrote that I was really happy with – at the time it was a big step up in production, singing and playing for me. The new version for this year’s MJRF has been completely re-done, except I kept the original BPM. I’m quite happy with how this turned out. Despite a little drumming by Mike Watkins appearing in the video, the music here is all me (drums are midi). And yes, the electric guitar is my Tele – couldn’t find a Gibson ES335 for the video unfortunately.

The video, apart from little bits of me singing and playing, is made up of photos from those days – the people we were close to, band members and places we hung out. I discovered that while making a video sounds pretty easy, when you actually start doing it, it can be quite a complex set of tasks. I used iMovie HD to record the live video and Final Cut Express to build the final clip.

Rob, if you’re seeing this in some supernatural way, I reckon we could have done a great version of this mate – maybe we have ☺

Lyrics
The Thin Man Dreams
© 2005 Neil Porter

Heading down the Oatley stairs
The thin man waits, enjoys a cup of tea
Hanging out in rattan chairs
Musicians smoking, talking aimlessly

Mid summer sun has left the small
Verandah as the band begins to play
The thin man takes his Gibson
And it shimmers in the middle of the day

A gentle man
He stayed serene
A subtle hand
The thin man in a dream

The thin man closes happy eyes
He smiles and lets the rhythm have its way
He weaves a tingling tapestry
Floats unsuspected notes above the fray

Session over, vibe is up
The thin man’s smile's engraved upon his face
As he prepares another cup a happy thin man
Glides about the place

A gentle man
He stayed serene
A subtle hand
The thin man in a dream

Heading up the Oatley stairs
The thin man waves, enjoys a cup of tea

When the band begins to play
Thor, I'm really pleased that you enjoyed this. Rob and his friends in the band kindly accepted me without any band experience at all, and to me, the days playing at Oatley were so very special.
Keep a seat warm for me at the bar - not hard with the 30 degree temps we're having at the moment. I'll be there as soon as I do my comment catch-up :)

the thought that Rob might somehow have a hand in this came to me when I listened back to the solo guitar parts I played as the last part of the recordimg - some of the licks were very much along the lines of what he might have played.

Nice tone on the acoustic. Your vocs are sounding good, nice harmonies. Enjoyed where the bass kicks in for the first time on "band begins to play". Excellent production retains a live feel with none of the usual drawbacks. A nice tribute to yur friend

Dave
The song was originally going to be acoustic all the way through when I first wrote it, but the lyrics "band begins to play" just screamed out for a band to strike up. We had a pseudo Hammond B3 player and so on, so the sound isn't that far away from what we could have sounded like.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Nicely played and well written and arranged. Neil I have only been here at MJ for a little over a year but I feel that in that time I have noticed tremendous growth in your music. I thought your last song was great but I like this one even more. The video gives it a different element - makes it more emotional an experience, especially since a lot of us are at an age where these kinds of experiences are happening more and more in our lives.

Very enjoyable work - thank you for sharing this with us.

Thanks for your kind words - I think I've made a fair bit of improvement in electric guitar mainly. Not sure that my songwriting now is as good as when I started writing in 2005 - I've lost a part of the spark that ignited me in the first place I think - certainly running out of new ideas. Maybe we could say my production is "maturing" :)
I agree. We've lost some good friends over the past 10 years, the most significant being my wife Jan's best girlfriend. Very sad, and in my experience "only the good die young" is a proven adage.
But ...... life goes on!

Neil, what a tribute song and video. I'm just shy of words. Video is a well crafted piece of movie making. The song - your singing and playing is mellow jiguma styled rock. And your decent and generous spirit that envelopes the whole thing..... just so good.
Kudos from up yonder.

I'm glad someone noticed the Tele sound - I was pretty pleased with the way it combines lightness and sustain (with a bit of gravel in to hold things together). I have to admit it's not a tone Rob would have used - he was more the thin jangly style of player - but I loved how it set this tune off.
Thanks for the comment - it really is good to see you back at MJ.

typical Neil...
smooth, catchy perfection, captured in an mp3 dewdrop. touching tribute to Rob, and as the music goes so many places we cannot imagine, this will likely get to him, as he smiles and enjoys a cup of tea.

the video work is well done too. there are so many things to learn in final cut, however it looks like you have many of them figured out. at times a little busy with overlaid imagery, but on the other hand, that gives the feeling of many memories.

I'm very pleased to get your comment on the video in particular (although I liked the "smooth, catchy perfection, captured in an mp3 dewdrop" bit!). Video is certainly another thing altogether - just matching the aif and the playing is tricky, and then there's the overlays, titles, fades, and whatever other fancy stuff you can get your head around. I found Final Cut so much better than any of the iMovie options. I'll have to get some clues on animation and stuff some day.
I really enjoyed doing this again. It was always a song that I felt deserved more than I could give it when I wrote it.

Hi Jack (always love typing that!)
Thanks for the listen. The video thing is a steep learning curve, but it's also pretty rewarding when it works. The biggest obstacle to making a passable video seems to be content. If you don't have a good visual story, it's almost impossible to make anything worthwhile. Fortunately, a lot of my songs are about very specific events/places/people, so maybe I'll try doing this again. The "one good idea" I had on this was to have a base video (the acoustic picking) running all the way through to give it visual cohesion.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I think I remember a similar comment from you before on one of my songs about the people we all have in our personal histories. You are correct in that this was a really special time for me/us as we all grew up. Life got so serious pretty soon after this period, having to find jobs and settle down seemed somewhat counter-intuitive at the time.
Thanks for the comments about the sound - this was always a good song badly played and recorded in earlier versions, so I'm pleased that the sound worked out so well. The Tele sound here is a definite favourite for me too.

What a wonderful tribute
Clearly there was inspiration at work when you penned this one Neil. A great song with a story/retrospective feel. There is a strong sense of how important this person and time was to you, and it's a real treat to see the photos as well to round out our understanding.

Love the moment 'and the band begins to play'. You captured it perfectly even though it may seem obvious.

Brilliant throughout. Many thanks for letting us see and feel this time and place.

Peace,

I wrote this very early in my songwriting "renaissance" at MJ, and was still really excited to find that I could actually write a song that people might enjoy. Hearing about Rob was very sad for Jan and I - he was someone who had a lot to give and contribute, but for one reason or another never seemed to get a lot of things going his way in adult life.
It was lots of fun trawling through old photo albums to find the photos of the group of people we used to (and still do with some) hang out with.

Sense of melancholy
After watching this video, I was filled with a sense of melancholy - more pensive and wistful than gloom-and-doom.

Rob's was a gentle life that intertwined however briefly with Neil's, leaving an indelible and lasting mark that comes out in the song and video. As musicians, many of us can relate to easy-going rehearsal spaces and times spent in them. As Neil said in his Description, these memories often dot "dreamtimes" for many of us ... back when our lives were simple and it could actually just be about making music with good friends.

This song and video spoke to me on a number of levels. The song is smooth and expressive ... I'm convinced that Neil just sits around all day crafting certifiable hits. The full backstory just adds to the aura.

If the intent of a song and/or video is to stir the emotions of others, then "mission accomplished", my friend.

The phantom drummer :)
Hi Mike - first, thanks for letting me steal those drumming clips. Do you think anyone noticed? :)
Thanks again for the great comments, both here and by email. So, the truth is out about my daily activities then - I do try to fit a few other things in, but music is very much what I do these days.
Thanks on a general level for the drumming support you've given over the last few years. It's good to know that "virtual friendships" can morph into "real-world friendships", something I hadn't expected to be possible, but something which has occurred for me a number of times at MJ.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I'm very curious about how the whole video thing works....

This is a nicely appreciative and affectionate song that doesn't get maudlin... Lets your friend Rob be your friend Rob and lets that be enough... And it is.... There's this sense of peeking into a bygone world that was just a nice place to be....

It's cool getting to see you play and sing. You do a "neck thing" when you're singing that's very similar to what Fran does...

Leading once again, Neil....

Ed

Pure artistery
I have always been amazed by the originality and musical quality that comes out of your production. This time you amaze me again. The production here is so mature, yet still with life and originality. I remember this from your first posts, yes this is a real shake-up. One of the best posts, not only on MJ but on the whole internet.

By the way I didn't know it was possible to post a film clip like that. Really great to see you live singing .. More please! I am continually a greatets fan.

Johannes

PS I give you lots of cori fans for this one...

Curry!!!!!
First, it's really good to see you back here - I was wondering what you were getting up to :) I hope all is well for you and yours.

Thanks for the fantastic comments - this was always one of my favourite songs of mine, and it was a labour of love to get it spruced up for the MJRF - doing the video opened my eyes to the possibilities of that medium, and I like what I saw. You can expect more of those, but it makes choosing a theme for lyrics even more challenging.
I liked all the fans :)

Very best wishes from down here in Oz,
Neil

Wonderful Tribute
to someone who touched your life in a special way. This tune is a very fitting eulogy, of sorts.

It has a very pleasant, gently rollicking feel which is both laid-back, yet has a lot of energy. I would imagine that Rob was the same way.

Excellent production, from performance to recording to mixing. Thoroughly enjoyed!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the song. Rob was so laid-back outwardly, but you may be right - maybe he had a pretty busy motor burning inside. Whatever, he was a person I'm very pleased to have known.

I always did do a lot with arrangements in earlier incarnations - I think we shared a stage in the Bergundy court days :)
I still like to work with the idea that songs are played by bands, so the more like a band I sound, the better I've succeeded.
Cheers from Oz!

Creative!
Amazing performance and production, as usual. I dig those minor/major changes. You have a unique touch with the rhythm guitars. Any secrets/ideas behind your chords? You don't use regular chords, do you?

I've always looked forward to your songs as a source of inspiration before anything else. You always give me new ideas!

The video was an excellent addition as well. Will look you up on YouTube as soon as possible!

Thanks for the good time listening to this, and for bringing a lot of people to our attention.

Regular chords
Missed this bit: I never really learnt all the guitar chords, scales and theory - bass players (where I was playing bass anyway) never needed to know that stuff. However, I've started using more straght-forward chords recently so as I don't confuse the guitarists and keybardists I play with live. I have a reputation for inventing chords other people don't know. All that happens is that I sit and play around with finger positions and what sounds good ends up in a song. It's all fun!

At the time of the photos in the video, Rob was "one of the gang", but seemed to find it harder to socialise as he grew older. A really decent guy though - I wish we'd kept more in touch.

The ultimate version.
You've really fattened-up the sound here and your performances are more confident here -- I just listened to v.1 and v.2. While this is the same song and bpm, you really have given this song a whole new life. There are no place-holder tracks here, all the "musicians" are thinking and reacting as if live. The harmonies, the little double-note lead compliments, and especially that solid rhythm section... The drums are very natural, I would have thought them to be acoustic, so: great job on the midi. A great way to top-off a salute you began years ago.
