Description
i always try to write honest tunes, especially when i'm writing about myself. i'm in a kind of self reflective mood these days - that whole 'entering middle age' thing i guess. i remember when i used to sit down before studio time in a panic trying to come up with lyrics. now you can't shut me up. anyway i'm still trying to come up with new ways to express traditional country/southern rock.

Lyrics
when i was sixteen
all i wanted was a girl and gasoline
wasn't much good at either thing
i wrecked the car
and got divorced at 23
yeah, be careful what you wish for
you might get it in spades
you usually got it coming
when you think you got it made

i've been a piss poor keeper of my brother
i have a hard time seeing jesus in that other
i'm quicker with a fist
than i am with a hand
when i should be giving my all
i'm normally phoning it in
and i don't know where some people get the idea
that things turn on the golden rule
i've got a good life, kid, and a wife
yeah, i guess i'm just a lucky fool

when i was sixteen
i thought that girls and pills and rock and roll
would be my scene
then i woke up at 33
thinking that happiness was fifteen minutes of peace
yeah, i wasted more precious time
than old ronnie van zandt
and ended up upright
how 'bout that

CHORUS

Alright!
Love the honesty of this bro.

And the sound is very much in the vein of recent Bottle Rockets efforts. Something I really dig.

Great job, you lucky fool you! Ha ha...

Be well friend!

Can't help but like it
This is a style of music that I don't care for, but you pulled it off really well. Nice performances and outstanding lyrics. Nothing piss-poor about this effort.

i like that painting too
- funny, as a whole, it doesn't seem much like rockwell's work but when you look at the individual characters it stays true to what you'd expect. man i'm glad you think the sound is laid back, i definitely want a barefoot sound.

Nice!
"then i woke up at 33
thinking that happiness was fifteen minutes of peace"

I have three teenage daughters. I can relate to that big time!

What is that effect on the guitar at about 3:40? That's totally cool!

Awesome song man! I had my lighter torching above my head the whole time.

schmiddle age, you play and sing like a kid :-) a wicked talented one, but seriously you always pack the fun and wonder in. Love the lyrics and that way cool guitar riff that takes it out. Excellent tunage Craig

Stonesy, Grandpa Jonesy
Only Tempie can straddle the Stones and Hee Haw with such might!

Your lyrics are all grown up and packed with vigorous eavesdroppings with the man in the mirror. You show a lack of limpwristed penmanship that I've come to expect from you. Honest tunes are what you do and this is probably, one of the best, honestly and tunefully.

The guitars are killer. Love the clean strummy stuff with the nicely distorted. For some strange reason, I hear a heavy Hamlet Machines influenced vibe during the transition between a lucky fool and when I was 16. That's a high compliment coming from the 33% of the band that thinks Hamlet Machines is the greatest band ever!! Bassline is almost as if heaven dropped out of a five extra arms song onto a soft cushy cloud for your pleasure. (heheheheheh)

Great song Tempie. One of your very best, hands down, Johnnie Brown.

limpwristed penmanship
ha that's a great phrase. i was thinking pavement for that transition but hamlet machines is so much better i'll just say yeah, that's what i was going for. also, somewhere between the stones and hee haw is perfect, i'll take it.

always self conscious doing those woo hoos. i wish i had a group of 70's outlaw country backup singers stored in the closet for things like this. glad you liked the production, i'm never sure if it works or not.

Killer lyrics
"piss poor keeper of my brother" is such and intense line. Makes me think of Springsteen's "Highway Patrolman" - easily the best brothers song. You're vocals are extra southern on this track, which is delicious. But the music is that wild mix of southern rock and indie that only you can pull off.

highway patrolman
is one of my favorite springsteen songs. i'm just not the care taker type. if somebody asks for something within reason i'll hand it over but i don't volunteer much. i think that's a rural mindset, not wanting to offer something to someone until they ask, don't want to hurt their pride. it's also a great excuse to ignore people. ha. i can twang it up or not. that comes from having an "education". what did don williams sing, "learn to talk like the guy on the 6 oclock news", that's true. I'm joe slick at the office and joe redneck at home. never know which will show up on the song.

do unto others, then split
Wow that's a good one. Listened to it a few times just to figure out what that freaky chord is in the chorus, but I didn't succeed. As usual, I'm in awe of your genius arranging skills. the hard hitting lyrics are great. You play the shakers well too... much respect to you!

freaky chords
i learned guitar from a 40 year old guy that still lived at home in the basement of an old victorian house filled with cats. he was probably a serial killer but he loved freaky chords, so i rarely play anything straight. i love the shakers. i'd like to be a professional egg shaker player.

quirky cool
Just love the line "you usually got it coming when you think you got it made", no truer words spoken. Really like the odd discordant sparseness of this track. Nothing like middle age to defog the rear view mirror. I can totally relate.

dischordant sparseness
i knock on wood a lot, toss salt over my shoulder, a bunch of other silly things to ward off the shoe that i'm pretty sure is always nearby, ready to drop. that's the nature of life i guess. glad you liked the tune, always happy to see you drop by and give something a listen.

You're such a great lyricist...
This song is direct and engaging from the first 3 lines onward--it's just full of "sticky" phrases and memorable lines. My vote on arrangement (not that I'm entitled to one, but here I go) is for a "big" sing-alongish chorus: vocal harmonies, organ swells, the whole 9 yards. The lyrics can support it--they're almost begging for it.

But that's my unasked 2 cents--strong, honest tune in any case!

sticky phrases
i like stuff like that - i used to carry a million scraps of paper in my pocket with lines scribbled on them, and my wife would complain about finding them in the dryer, 'you're going to burn down the house!' ha now i have a blackberry, so the only danger is taking notes while driving. anyway i do like a good line. thanks for the suggestion - i'll let it age a while and take another look at it, see if it stands the test of time...

Honestly, this a great piece of inner-reflection song writing. Easier said than done. And you have done it.

The Golden Rule
Love that chorus, these lines in particular
"i'm quicker with a fist
than i am with a hand
when i should be giving my all
i'm normally phoning it in"
The acoustic is a nice flavor here, and I like the minimalist tone on all the guitars, it keeps things open. Your vocs are sounding good and deliver the lyric with conviction. Good seperation and balance in the mix.

Pills, thrills 'n' bellyaches
... not sure how I missed this. I guess the whole MJs drama kept me away for a bit. Wow dude, your best lyrics in an age (and that's saying something). Love that crunch guitar, and the "whoa oh oh". Pure Tempie magic but maybe a little Paddy style solo there at the end? Great stuff.
