Originally posted October 11, 2005.

I always liked this song, but there was something about the mix that bothered me....

I opened the original GarageBand2 file in Logic and promptly lost the two MIDI software instruments, so I chose a new synth and then mixed down aif's of the 'missing' synths and wove them in and out of the mix.

The background voices are from the original, but for whatever reason they stand out a whole lot more in Logic than they did in Garageband. So, while it sounds like there are more background vox than in the original...there aren't ;)

I reassigned Jam Pack Orchestral strings to the prior "Hollywood Strings" MIDI

I recorded new vox for the 'solo' voice.

Lyrics
WINTER'S BREATH

In Winter's Breath
I roam the landscape
Cold and white.
And Solitude its bleak companionship invite.

Arising from Love's bed
Of green and dewy field;
My heart's pure constancy betrayed.
To Sorrow now yield.

I'll wander 'midst Winter's Breath,
Its chill embrace,
Its icy fingers with my own interlaced.

In Winter's Breath....Winter's Breath....

Lovely!
I haven't heard the original mix but this sounds really good. All the vocals sound excellent, the main vocal standing out nicely against the background.

Just wonderful.
It is absolutely refreshing to hear such purity in sound in such a beautiful and restrained setting. The conception of your composition is completely unique. I'm really taken by the backup vocals as they weave through the number seamlessly right up to that wonderful fade. At 3:34, the chord resolution to a major triad is absolute magic...and your vocal pitch throughout the number is just perfect. Wow. This is a wonderful piece that I thoroughly enjoyed. (Your poem ——— the work of a masterful lyricist.)

Pristine
I love your control, the range displayed, the mix, the true sense of winter's breath. A celtic women style track, full of beauty and blush over a winterscape of pristine purity. Really nice track.

crystal chords
words float gently in the air as I listen, drifting along with the music, but never settling onto my white landscape of paper. I therefore cannot express the sound, the emotions, the sparse, harsh, ethereal beauty you conjure with such artistry. However, it perfectly paints a picture of Winter.

Beautiful
Great enviroment you set through the soundbed. I liked your panning vox that seems to carry the movement for me. beautiful voice and work here. Im not sure if your looking for any suggestions, but would like to see the main vocals a tad lower in the mix or pushed back a little. Amazing music. This is a great picture you've painted.

Thank you...
...for your comments here.
I almost posted a mix with the main vox slightly lower, but it just seemed to get awash in the backing vocals--so I nudged the main vox slightly up and called it a compromise :) As I mix with headphones (no monitors or speakers to work with), it's possible that my end result is not 'true' as it could be. I appreciate your comments and kind words!

Great vocals, both lead and background. The choice of synths is quite appropriate: they have a bit of an icy bite to them.

Cat
Just stunning! Really have to check out the original. I think the "Hollywood Strings" are a good choice as the Jam Pack ones can have too much attack for a gentle piece like this.
I could see this being used in "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" for the initial winter scenes.
Very nice,
Stephen

I DID hear the previous upload
According to iTunes 13 times here at home... To my ears the old mix works very well, but this new one does have a slightly more pristine quality to it I guess. Anyway it's a truly lovely song perfect for this winter. (For once we have been blessed with a snowy winter here in Stockholm and cold weather since before Christmas, I had my 25th skiing outing today, e.g. where I usually might have had just a couple :-)

Thanks for reminding me of this gem!

All the best,

Henrik

I listen to this...
...and want to, I don't know, storm Valhalla or something...

You somehow managed, Cat, to use a wonderful, warm vocal tone to evoke great cold...

I'm very impressed, too, with that vocal tone, which sounds natural and unstrained. I'm also impressed that you did that with a Behringer mic...

It's a neat meld of song and poem...

Winter's Breath
great addition to the festival Cat. One thing I do love about the winter, especially storms when your out in them, you feel truly at peace. Solitude & tranquility come through for me hearing this.
Your voice sounds terrific.

Lovely sparkle
to this recording, Cat.

Your lovely voice is shown to great advantage here, both solo and accompanying, and the accompanying strings support it wonderfully well. Good old Hollywood Strings!

This music has a strong element of sustained, controlled movement, and would be excellent as a setting for ballet.

The polished, professional sound of this recording makes me want to finally learn how to use my old LE7 that I've never explored. You've done a fabulous job with Logic!

This is one of your most beautiful songs! It is a marvelous mix. I love hearing all your voices floating together, and the mystical chords that you go with. I also love the picture of you, it is interesting because it makes you appear as a woman and as a child at the same time. Thanks for sharing this:)

Sent chills up my spine in a very very good way!

You always knock my socks off. I first heard you in a collab I think you did with Echoroom and I've been a fan ever since! Would love to see you get into a pop/ambient song soon along the lines of Sarah Mchlaughlin (spelling) or something like that.

This is great!

Goosebumps
The interplay of your lead VOX and the backing vocals is enchanting and leaves a feeling of mystery and exploration - like walking alone in the winter forest in a light snowfall and wondering what's beyond the next stand of trees.

The tone you set is hauntingly beautiful Cat. I am captivated in your white cold world.
