TELL ME HONEY

Description
Our little band is getting serious after some intensive cobweb brushing has been going on. This track was recorded live in one run (I think it's our second take) - the solo is dubbed, but otherwise just a little tweaking in Logic Pro. It's the first recording we've done on our new equipment, and we're pretty pleased how it came out. This is very much a rough take, but augers well for the future.

Written by McDougall, Wisener and Reid.

Peter Reid - Roland v-drums and vocal
Gus Washbourne - Indie guitar
Chris Ralphs - Warwick fretless bass
Neil Porter - Fender Telecaster guitar

And now the video - with Lyndon Lewis, Ken Vatcher and George the Dog:

Hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
TELL ME HONEY ©1989 McDougal, Wisener, Reid

OH TELL ME WHERE DJA GET THE MONEY HONEY
WHERE DJA GET THE CASH?
WHO’S YOUR SECRET LOVER BABY?
WHERE’S YOUR SECRET STASH?
TELL ME HONEY
OH TELL ME BOUT THOSE FANCY THINGS
I’M ONLY JUST ABOVE THE BREAD LINE
AND YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES AND RINGS

I GIVE YOU ALL I EARN, I DON’T GET NOTHIN’ BACK
INFORM ME NOW OR YOU CAN START TO PACK
TELL ME HONEY
OH TELL ME BOUT THOSE FANCY THINGS
I’M ONLY JUST ABOVE THE BREAD LINE
AND YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES AND RINGS

I CAN’T AFFORD A SIX PACK
YOU’RE DRINKING STOLLI ON ICE
YOU’RE EATIN CAVIAR AND OYSTERS WHILE I SUBSIST ON RICE
TELL ME HONEY
OH TELL ME BOUT THOSE FANCY THINGS
I’M ONLY JUST ABOVE THE BREAD LINE
AND YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES AND RINGS

I’M ONLY JUST ABOVE THE BREAD LINE
AND YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES
YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES
YOU’RE WEARING FANCY SHOES AND RINGS

Sweet groove
The reverbs are nicely done, they make it sound really heavy. Tight work, guys! Nice snare too...

Big reverb never hurt this sort of tune :) The snare, as are all the drums, a direct audio send from the Roland e-kit to Logic (via the Presonus) - we're still trying to master the midi side of things. The Roland e-kit is a seriously brilliant piece of gear.
Cheers,

We were pleased the way this turned out for our first recording on the Mac. Can't miss mixing good tracks in Logic with some sparkle and beef from Ozone 3.

great recording, very clear, the guitars sound superb with a great tone, this band is tight.

Great vocals and I love the overall sound of this band, always good to hear a live recording and this is excellent.

Very much enjoyed and D/L, thanks.

It's short and sweet here - the live version is longer. Personally, I love the bass sound - Chris has a touch of Jack Bruce in early Cream here to my ears.
Thanks for listening.

PBGB is a great little institution. For me (Neil) it's been a fantastic opportunity to develop some guitar chops and live vocal skills, and I think most of us will have similar feelings. On top of everything it's a great bunch of people to hang about with.
Hopefully this is the first of a few posts at MJ.
Thanks for listening.

Indie Guitars
Hi Vic, http://www.indieguitars.com/ should help you out with that question - :)

The switch from Cubase on a PC to Logic Pro on a Mac (even the tiny one we are using) has made a HUUUUUGE improvement in ease of use and quality of sound.

I think things will pick up from here on.

A little Dave Matthews
influence in this one I would say. Very cool groove from the rhythm section. Vocals very well done as well. Enjoyed it!

Charles
thanks for having a listen to this little experiment. It's interesting being a long-term bass player and having someone play bass behind my guitar - I think Chris did a terrific job considering he probably only played the song once through before we recorded. Our drummer Pete is pretty good at keeping things together in that department too.

Cool
MJs success, for me, is in letting me hear styles of music that wouldn't normally be my bag. Boogie rock has never been top of my list but this is just so brillantly groovy! The guitar and bass are locked solid to the drum beats - plus that vocal sits so well at the front. I really like this.

dont count!!!! seriously...this sounds totally different from a jiggie tune...your tele playing is serious!! niice...if i use this echo setting on my bands vocals, no one ever likes it. But I love it for some reason...

This is an excellent start, to be sure.

Very cool....we should stay in touch and share this experience of using the MAC as Recording Studio in the real world....

Really pleased with this neil...go get it!
