So What's 96 in Rio?

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
My soaring project is, for the most part, completed. I still have tweaking to do with some of the tracks, and I will most likely keep fiddling with them in some capacity or another all the way up until they are actually put into the video. And the video may actually be out by summer!

Yes, I am excited.

It's a good thing too, as my composing has been leaning towards a direction that would soon be wrong for soaring. I think this new piece may be a case in point. For my next musical project the binding theme will be television or movie theme songs. I imagine this piece at the beginning of the next hot crime drama, which takes place in Rio De Janeiro (CSI Rio?). I find it difficult to characterize my music in any particular genre, but I do think this piece has an exotic twist to it.

I am looking for good constructive comments on my string work. In each of my last 2 or 3 songs I have used more and more strings - I really have fallen in love with them. I am using GB for these instruments but I am striving for an authentic sound so please tell me what you think, and be honest, but be kind as my ego is like a delicate flower...

The picture: I was surfing around looking for a snazzy pic of Rio and came across this shot of one of their neighborhoods - I was taken aback. But, other than the fact that it is in Rio, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the theme of the show.

Thank you for stopping by to listen - I sincerely hope you enjoy this piece.

Sigmund, this is spectacular. Now, you're using just GB strings, or do you mean the JamPack orchestral strings? if this is straight off of GB, then I'm especially amazed at how well they sound. I just got the Miroslav orchestral software and will be putting up a song soon using them for the first time - it will be interesting for you to hear because what YOU have done here sounds to ME as good as what that special software does. we MUST TALK!! :D

Good Morning Karen
Thanks for stopping by - very much appreciated, as always. The strings are from the jampack series - it WOULD be amazing to get these kinds of sounds from the stock GB library, wouldn't it? I have never heard of the Miroslav software and would like to hear more about it, and I find myself intrigued at the prospect of hearing what you do with them, soon, yes?. You are right - perhaps we should talk - I will send you an email and perhaps even a phone conversation? Thanks again for stopping by - I always look forward to seeing you!

How do I put this gently....
The legato strings sound good. But I truly hope that you're considering that riff at 0:22 a synth riff, not a string one. It is so obviously keyboard technique. (Hint: that little ghost note.) Same for that run after 2:10. Are you using key switching to go between up and down stroke samples? If not, that might make a difference.

The rest of the track is good. Nice and big sound. I enjoyed the composition. Cool guitar work towards the end.

Thanks for your candidness - I appreciate it. I am also most grateful for introducing me to a new concept (at least for me) - key switching. GB's jampacks sounds do have some flexibility, but after doing just a little checking in to it I realize how much more can be done with some other types of software (like Logic, for example)...whew! I am indebted to you.

Hi Vic
Glad you stopped by for a listen, and gracias for your thoughts. I agree with you the jam packs have some real usable sounds - it is still a challenge to convince the listener they are hearing the real thing as opposed to keyboard strings. I think I still have a ways to go. Thanks again for listening, Vic.

This tune really got into my head. yep I can hear this as a TV soundtrack. My recordings are far more basic but to me this sounds very polished and proffesional. Thge sweeping strings and the stacatto rythem counter work really well. Good stuff. Mark

Great stuff, again
Love that intro build and splash. Then it soars out across the city... yes, this does sound sort of urban, not sure why, but the music does hint at that, instead of open natural space, well done. As always, you have a really crisp mix here, rich sounds, the guitar work fits in well... pro piece!

i don't think things could get much better than this working with the jam packs. you've done an incredible job with these strings sigmund. ok i have to listen again....ok so, depending on how nitpicky you want to get. the panning is off as far as how an actual orchestra would probably be set up. wow you got some powerful sounds out of those horns too! you've created a wonderful ebb and flow of energy with this piece. I would be interested in hearing you filling the bottom of this piece in with some orchestral percussion to boost the rock drum kit. or, given the title and slightly exotic feel of this piece, maybe try some bongos or something brazilian.

I think overall your use of the strings has taken huge leaps forward with this piece. there is definitely that cinematic feel to them, which can give a little artistic leeway in breaking some of the "orchestral" rules. there are only a couple of places i think where a break in the strings would be necessary to give it a more "real" feel - like how horn players need to breathe. String players need to change the direction of their bowing, or lift up and start over completely. i'm still learning all of this myself - strings are very very complex but they can do SO many amazing things.

i LOVE this piece. the quality of sound you're getting from ozone is just amazingly rich and crisp. i would love to hear you get just a little more adventurous with using some ethnic instruments in your compositions, taking them a little further away from a more rock-instrumental sound and into a world-fusion sound.

Glad to see you! HEY - weren't you supposed to call me, like a month ago? Thank you so much for all the nice, thoughtful comments - much appreciated. I have you to thank in part for my musical growth. Last time we phone conversed you told me about the northern sounds website, and some of the information presented was very interesting and helpful. Now what I am starting to realize is that when you really get down to the subtle articulations and nuances of the strings (as well as other instruments), well my current setup just isn't going to work much longer, so I may soon be exploring the possibility of moving up to Logic. I also see Karen just posted and though i have not heard her work yet I am looking forward to hearing what her new software sounds like. That is my next stop on the MacJams highway.

Thank you again for everything - I really value your opinion! Take care -

P.S. The guitar riffs and drums give that urban feeling, I think. Whether it is in Rio or up in the States I'm not sure. Maybe the latter...

Hello Henrik
Nice to see you here - thanks for listening and commenting.

The original title did not include "Rio", and although it is certainly not written with any kind of Latin feel, I felt the song had a hint of an exotic feel - just a hint. So, just for the heck of it I added the location. I suppose it could just as easily be Vegas or LA or New York. We'll see if the networks pick it up (hehe).

Thanks again - I appreciate it!

Your songs are fantastic and grand sounding. There is a kind of storytelling going on. I love the sound of the strings. Can't believe that you get that out of GB...? The details in the composition are masterly put in place to support and add punch to the melody and to the total feel. All things works seamlessly. You are a true virtuoso, and handle every instrument so good.

That guitar solo and grooving... I'm stunned!

of drive and movement. Great orchestration. Love the always interesting interplay between the voices that goes. Beautiful details. I like your strings but on occasion a they lack subtlety and come across a little course. But still remarkable coming from a jampack.

As usual, your artistry shines through. I am an amateur when it comes to string composition so I have no critical opinion except my taste. I like the techniques you employ here. The one thing I will note is that sometimes the high strings on peoples work (even my own) sound more like viola and violins or just violas. and that real high ethereal quality of the 1st violins is missing. But that could be a matter of taste.
Very good, your stuff is always good. Excited to see the finished video.

I think that the
TV theme idea becomes reinforced towards the end with big baddadah drum and then the guitar, the whole things reeks of quality, and I have to say to Vic D,your ears must be a blessing and a curse ! Anyhoo I am a little cofused, these sounds and 'packs' of which you and Karen speak, are they loops or soundfonts that can then be played on keyboard and can you get them for PC? Excellent piece of work,I
will have another Speckled Hen and sit back in the auditorium Bravo...!

Hello Chris
I am happy to see you came by my page here, and thanks for the listen, as well as the very nice comments - much appreciated!

The JamPacks are a combination of sound fonts and loops. The symphony orchestra jampack is what I use for my strings and horns. I only use loops for my drums, however - everything else is played on the keyboard. The percussion section in the middle break is actually a combination of an orchestra percussion loop (edited a bit) and sound fonts from a percussion library. Well worth the investment if you are looking to expand your sound library.

Thanks again!

Vibrant, exciting and dynamic
should be perfect for tv. Well done, as usual; and thanks.

I think your use of Ozone may be what's impressing others about your use of GB to get this quality of sound. Even I ;-) am starting to find GB limitations but I'm not sure I want to start learning new software. You, on the other hand, should: you have a lot of ability and a more complete software package would allow you to really "soar".

The harder I try, the harder it is to find a flaw.
Love the main "chug" of strings, left and right, that push the movement forward. Nice midrange French horn-range melodies intertwined with the natural piano runs. Wish I knew more about how to use GB to get the strings doing any kind of work at all. (I don't own a keyboard, I'm a holdout garage guitar purist but you're making me jealous.) I'm hungry for more of the guitar, which you tease-out with great taste here. I cant' tell if I want the guitar louder because I'm guitar-centric, or because in some objective way it would add more dynamic counterpoint to the strings, but that's as close as I get to criticizing this tune.
