Making this song has been quite an adventure. I am using the IK Miroslav Philharmonik orchestral software for the first time. I can’t get over what a difference it makes in instrument sound quality. Thank you to Patrick (Futzpucker) for the 2 years of nagging to invest in this software. It was SO worth it!
This started as a piano piece which I worked on for about a month. As always, it took me awhile to decide how it “goes”, and I also had to just plain practice, so I could play it through for recording. These days I write my piano music with orchestration in mind, and I couldn’t wait to get started using the new software.
As some of you know all too well, doing the orchestration to this was fraught with technical difficulties. The new software was constantly crashing my GarageBand whenever I tried to save, or "save as". It took awhile for me to realize what was happening, and that “save” was actually NOT saving, so I lost a lot of work at first which was of course very frustrating. I consulted with both Apple and the good people of IK (Miroslav), but the problem remained unresolved. Eventually I started hitting “save as” literally after every couple of changes ("save" alone was not working at all), so that if I lost them it wouldn’t feel catastrophic. And “save as” continued to fail about half the time. That was a tedious work around, but at least I could make semi-forward progress without having to re-compose big swaths of the orchestral accompaniment. Late in the game Patrick had an “ah-ha” which may prove to have been the problem (and boils down to “read the manual"!) – but I won't be able to test it until I start a new project! I really tried to showcase the gorgeous Miroslav instruments here (although I barely know how to use them yet), and in spite of the difficulties, I would recommend this software to anyone interested in an affordable upgrade from the Symphony Orchestra and Voices Jam Packs. I have obsessively and endlessly tweaked this mix so hopefully I'm in the ballpark with the orchestral instruments relative to each other.
Special thanks to Shay (kassia) for the dozens of critical listens, very helpful critique, and honest feedback and ideas along the way. You always give me a lot to think about as the instrumentation is growing. Also, a huge thank-you to Patrick (Futzpucker), for the similarly thorough critiques and willingness to listen to multiple developing versions in spite of your very busy schedule. You reliably tell me what I need to be thinking about (or thinking about differently) (or dropping entirely :)) I value you both so much as my core feedback team, and especially as my friends.
