Smokin' Pickin'

Description
Hola everyone,

Here's an original piece written in dedication to Joe Robinson. I was inspired to write this tune after hearing Robinson's "Bergeson Fries." Joe was jamming one day with Pat Bergeson (Atkins' sideman) and Pat gave him the idea of playing the boom-chic bass (Atkins/Travis picking) with a shuffle feel rather than the standard (and sometimes boring) picking. Joe liked it and wrote "Bergeson Fries" in that bluesy-shuffle thumbpicking as a tribute to Pat Bergeson. I heard "Bergeson Fries" and was instantly inspired to write something in that style. This is the result; here's my first attempt at writing a piece in the style of Travis/Atkins, with a shuffle twist.

Audio/Recording: the song was the *hardest* to record out of anything I've recorded. This is take 1059... it really gave me a hard time. I recorded this take and was quite satisfied with the performance, left it a couple of days and then came to listen to it, only to hear some clipping-like sounds. I was frustrated but I swore never to record this song again, not in my house! I'm sorry, I know it's kinda annoying, but the melody is there. ;)

It was an honor to realize that Joe had actually watched the video of this song and left a comment. Those were his words: "wow! man this is an incredible tune!!! I should learn it!! You play and WRITE great man! Keep up the good work! Keep composing - man we've got to jam sometime! :)" (can be found in the comments section here). We're now really good friends and usually communicate (thru emails) every now and then.

Here's a live performance of "Smokin' Pickin'" at an open mic, in a cafe:

If you're not familiar with Joe Robinson then you're missing one of the best (and to me, the most talented) young guitarist in the world. He was the winner of Australia's Got Talent 2008 and also the Senior Grand Championship Winner of the World Championships of Performing Arts (out of 75,000+ entries!!!). At just the age of 18, he's already been performing sold-out concerts, inspiring many people around the world to pick up their guitars, and adding his name to the list of greats in fingerstyle guitar.

Here's his "Bergeson Fries."

I hope y'all will enjoy some pickin' and grinnin'!

Thanks,
- Yeman

PS. The title came from Joe's nickname as "Smokin' Joe Robinson."

Really engaging piece
This has all sorts of very enjoyable little twists and turns, and although it sounds like it is an intensely tricky-sounding thing to play, you manage to make it sound really smooth and bouncy, and on top of that, it is a super-fun piece of music to listen to. Fabulous composing and playing here, Yeman! Faved, of COURSE! It is quite a treat!

And the little clicks do not sound like clipping, they sound more like the computer having a tough time keeping up with the recording... make sure to quit all other programs and give your recording software all the CPU it needs. Or start selling those CDs and buy a bigger computer! ;-)

ttfn,
Drakonis

Thanks!
Thank you for clearing up the issue about the quality. I think that was it; I usually leave FireFox open all the time. Thank you for the kind words as well; it's a bit tricky getting to play the two parts simultaneously but that's as fun as anything can get! I like it... :)

wi-fi
I find my wi-fi also makes for trash noise in my tracks if I have it on - I always turn it off if I'm recording. This could just be my own problem with my laptop -

Wow, nice piece!
I love your playing (I'm relatively new to MJ, but I've already heard a couple of your tunes which are really impressive for their expressive and polished performance) but I think I'm an even bigger fan of your composing. This piece managed to be harmonically and melodically interesting and engaging in a short period of time--something that eludes even some of the greatest fingerstyle guitarists. Congratulations on this--great story above too!

Everything At Once
Great job! The feel and separation of "parts" is good.
This is a physically demanding style to play. Many great players in this area! Please take my advise and develop reasonable limits on your physical pursuit of this lightning.
Having fallen into this abyss myself, the tendon release surgery cost me 20% of the compression strength in my left hand. At the height of the problem I could not hold a plate in my left hand.
Suggestion, try tunes by: Robert Johnson, Lenny Brau, Blind Blake and my personal favorite Roger Hubbard. IMHO this genre is correctly termed "Stride" guitar.

Smooth
excellent pace, esquisite technique, flawless performance Yeman. Very impressive, even if it's take 1059 (who'se counting?) it hasn't lost passion/lustre/shine. Pity admittedly about that sporadic crackling on the recording (1:54-2:00 is the most noticeable stretch if anyone wants to help de-bug?) .. sorry, no idea what could be causing that ..apart from some loose connection/lead possibly?

Hard to believe, Yeman....
...just how far you've come.... You've become an astounding musician, and in my book that means that you've got taste, chops, and, even in a laid back tune like this, some real human emotion in your playing...

Maybe you need to run this through SoundSoap... Might get rid of whatever the crackles are... They don't actually sound like clipping to me, but maybe a whisker of digital clipping sounds like that.... Bet they'd clean up easily...

Ed

First of all, your song description is amazing — not only do you tell us about the song, but you embed a video, and provide us with links that can enlighten and entertain us further... Fantastic.

Second, I was impressed by the fact that you did numerous takes of this until you got it right... You obviously have set a high standard for yourself, and you should; you are very, very good. The more you practice anything, the better it will become (if you practice intelligently, anyway).

And finally, there is the performance of the song itself, which is suberb. I could listen to your music all day and never get bored; very inspired!

Great job!
