Kev's Journey (Improvisation No 6)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This improvisation is in D flat major. I pulled out the old childhood trick of playing MOSTLY the black keys on the piano, thus giving it the Asian pentatonic flavour. For me, the ostinato base with the 6th degree of the scale is reminiscent of a train too.

You limited
yourself and you still came up with a gorgeous piece. I hear determination and a kind of acceptance that, perhaps, experience can't be planned..that the unexpected can surpass our desire and astound us at every turn of the track. :)

Creativity
In some ways, I find restricting the field to play in often generates my most creative moments. That said, as my improvisations never have anything preplanned, the "black key" emphasis simple emerged in the space that was being created. Thanks for your comments.

Lush and gorgeous
Hi Karen,

Thank you and nice to hear from you. I have been absent for a little while.

One could say that I am excessive with my use of the sustain pedal, but it is the "lush gorgeous" sound of the piano that emerges when you layer sound on sound on sound that I revel in. I have noticed in my improvisation recently, that I am starting to play with a dryer more sparse sound from time to time, which then offsets the pedalled passages all the more. I'll post one of those rarer improvs next.

I used to avoid keys like D flat and G flat as well. But I am discovering that D flat really does fall under the hand beautifully. I once read that it was Chopin's favourite key to play.

Also, like I said above to Demeter7, sometimes putting in a constraint (eg the key you choose) can necessitate exploring music in a new way rather than falling in the the usual comfortable and reliable patterns.

Wonderful
A very enjoyable listen... I've made many things sticking to one set of keys or another although I couldn't tell you the scale or degrees and stuff... I can simply say I liked it.

Ok back
I was so psyched to see you had posted. Thanks for listening to my music BTW. Amazing that you did this with just the black keys. Really gave this song a cool character. I dont know if you noticed, but it sounds like a school bus pulled up and opened the door with the air piston at the very end of this song, lol. It was so real sounding, I thought a diesel was driving by and took my headphones off. It is VERY subtle and not a problem at all. In fact, stuff like that makes recordings sound original imo. I have a track with my dog barking in one part. Unintentional but I left it. Well another great one. Loved it.

Black Keys & External Sounds
Hi Charles, thanks for your keen and intent and psyched listening. Just to clarify - there is a preponderance of black keys in the piece but still a good number of whites keys sprinkled in too.

As to noises. I record my session in my home which is a little one bedroom apartment in the heart of downtown Vancouver's Westend. Other delights to be heard in my recordings are the pitter pattering feet of the child upstairs, wind howling through my windows, dumpster divers, sirens and helicopters.

You constrain yourself however you like if it makes for better music. I've downloaded a copy: thank you.

Love this KEY
I have a real love for this sound, (my thing is more of a second degree feel), this is wonderful. There is a feel to this key, I can't explain. Great job.

That's the Ticket !
In addition to Irving Berlin, most of the old-time American band composers wrote in ultra flat keys.

I didn't think nuthin' of this until I read a report that the solar system vibrates at a very low B-falt. Flat keys are thus more in tune with the universe.

1993 movie
Yes in this 1993 movie "The Piano" - Harvey Keitel is the same way - under the piano -
only he is kind of stalking Holly Hunter crouching down in front of the pedals of
an old upright - and her Wholey stockings - there was this wholesome clarity in Michael Nymanns music -
as your 'Kev's journey' reminds me of - this song "the piano" (A minor) and is so much like it - (also one of my favorie to play)
- getting lost within your gorgeous mesmerizing rolling magic of 'Kev's Journey'
and an unexpected '6th' chord coda - which
is an uplifting type of ending - the kawai is
so nice and rich
