Oh Babe, What Would You Say?

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I remembered this tune from when I was very young and since that time it took me forever to find the title (could NEVER think of it). This was originally recorded by Hurricane Smith in 1972, who was the engineer on many Beatles albums and is now (amazingly) is in the public domain according to my resources (obviously Paul McCartney doesn't own this one!). I tried for a "boyish" voice on this one--believe me, I've not been "boyish" since Junior Samples' "Eloise with the Social Disease" was #3 on the charts.

Thanks again,

Michael

"Oh Babe, What Would You Say" was written by Smith and Eileen Sylvia (public domain)
Vocal: MJK
Accompaniment: JB&PK Records (distributed through Soul-Leema Enterprises)
Photo: Me during a break at Vito's Knuckle Room in East Orange, NJ---back in my drinking days. I remember "Broken Leg of Lamb" was the house specialty.

And, if I may: If any disgruntled member wishes to do a "send up" of this song or anything else I post, please stop and remember that what is new is is not necessarily good and what is old is not always to be laughed at. I would so much like to be treated the same as I treat you and your music, even if it's a style of music I may not be particularly fond of, or (more likely!) have only a scant knowledge of, but recognize as a job well done. There is music of all kinds and GOOD music of ALL kinds too. If the artists here did not believe truly in what they were doing, well, I don't think we'd be hearing such wonderful work. I believe in what I'm doing, at all times. Besides this, I'm telling you, the big bands ARE coming back! They've got no place to go, but they are coming back! You just gotta trust me on this! Thanks again!

Hi Sylvia
Honest to goodness, for maybe 12 years, I tried every possible resource attempting to find the name of this thing (and it didn't help that I was pretty young when this came out and totally remembered the lyrics incorrectly--at least what little I thought I knew!) and then one night on the internet on some Mp3 type site, PRESTO I found it! I even had Alan, who does these arrangements trying to find this song for me based on what little I remembered. It's such a nice song--thanks for stopping by and glad it brought back maybe a memory or two for you. Michael

Mr. America
Thanks (truly) for your kind words. This was a wonderful "rediscovery" for me (see what I wrote in Lilmom's space) for me and I was really thrilled to be able to sing this wonderful little song that I remember so fondly enjoying on the radio (and finally figuring out who sang this originally and seeing him on youtube performing it--Hurricane had a rather unusual style!) You take care and have a nice weekend! Michael

I'm breathing a sigh of relief on this one because really, it's not the sort of music I ordinarily sing and being a baritone this was a stretch for me, but at lower key, this sounded like a funeral dirge of some kind! Appreciated your stopping by--take good care now! Michael

Thanks very much Big T!
I was just so happy to finally be able to sing this with such a fine arrangement behind me. I neglected to mention in my song description that I used a very slight chorus effect on certain parts of the vocal---listening back to it later, I think I could have added a bit more, but maybe that would have been TOO weird sounding--you know how it is! Thanks again my friend---and keep up the most admirable work you are doing! You're one of the best. Michael

Awigze
I found two sites listing it in the PD, but you know, that's not always surprising. I know for example, Warner Brothers, which had a huge music company had all their songs from like, 1939 to 1970 lapse into the PD when they were bought out--somebody was not paying attention! Many Doris Day songs (for example) are in public domain because of that deal! Glad you remembered it---thanks for the compliment! Michael

You are a very talented guy--it's nice seeing you here! Thanks truly for your very kind remarks--and keep up the excellent work! Michael

Hey!
There he is! Hello Bronco--thanks for taking a bit of your time to listen and for your encouraging words. This song is kind of an oddity in that it was one of the few "pop jazz" style recordings to make it to the charts way back then. Glad you enjoyed this song because I really do too. Hope you and your musical partner are back soon with another good one! You take care now, Michael

Coming Directly to You From High Atop New Yawk's Hotel Ansonia, It's . . .
Such old songs (pre '50s) are a guilty pleasure of mine, and I've purchased albums by Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester, so this was ice cream to my ears.

There're troves of public domain songs available at several sites, including Duke University, and I've raded them all, but I sure can't perform them like this.
Check out my latest song called The Perfectionist
michaeljayklein said 2807 days ago (March 20th, 2010)
Hahahahaha...
You know Keith, I've actually done a series of recordings opening with a similar line (with me it's always "And now, coming to you live from the Hotel TipTop overlooking the uptown part of beautiful downtown Pottstown, it's....") Max Raabe is great, and so is the Pasadena Rooftop Orchestra, but you probably know all the ones out there. Thanks for the lead, and also for your generous words! Just for you, the next thing I slap up will be coming from the Hotel Tiptop's Ashtray Room. You take care and have a good weekend! Michael

Well I've learned (mostly from researching the viability of what I can post here) is not all public domain songs are necessarily old--they just slipped through and the owners forget to renew the copyright. This goes for movies too. Believe it or not, Frank Capra's classic, "It's a Wonderful Life"---public domain! Thanks for your kind words--really enjoyed your music today (that was fascinating!) Wow!
Michael Buble--take a hike! I highly doubt that will happen, but in all seriousness, I'm very grateful to artists like Buble, Connick and Michael Feinstein (my favorite of the trio) for reinventing this great music and introducing it to younger folks who perhaps are not familiar with it (Buble is excellent, but he has this lisp or something that always distracts me!). Yes, as I understand all it, all this is on on something called a Bespoke synthesizer and is performed by Alan McPike in London (he is astonishing and with my next song I'll post a youtube link showing Alan at work). Thanks so very much for stopping in for your kind remarks Retro! Take care now! Michael

You know...
I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Mark (wait, I think somebody said that before me!) But yes, at the risk of alienating some people here, I really don't get much of today's music at all really, at least not what the masses seem to like (then again, I never cared much for what the masses like since I was 4!) There will always be outstanding work done in the pop field, but like yourself, most of it has the same effect on me as listening to a bowl of Rice Krispies. Thanks VERY MUCH for your encouragement! I'm kind of sure of myself as a pianist, but this singing racket is relatively new for me. You take care now and hope to hear you at work soon! Michael
