That E Thing

Description
This is based on an Em guitar pattern that I've been messing around with for a number of years. It has a certain unresolved quality to it that I seem to gravitate towards at times. On this recording I'm playing acoustic guitar - electric bass and pencil edited some piano and horn samples. I also used Spectral Dronemaker to create the drone that comes and goes. The drums are Apple loops.
If there were a genre for this - it might be Peculiar - as it is I chose Other.

Nice!!!!!!!!
I'm a sucker for anything in the minor key and their dark, melancholic moods. Excellent, ethereal motif and I thought your choice of visual for this post signified what was to come uncannily! Really excellent track and remind me to buy you a pizza lunch for downloading this next time you are in Minneapolis Bud. Take care and thanks for the great work! Michael

Slow hand
guitar. Did you play while lying down? I think it is jazz. It moves, but slowly. Who's in a hurry, anyway? Love it. :)

I tried really hard to get a suspension hanging
where the tension of the dissonance is diffused by the slack rhythm. Unease without nervousness - if that makes sense. No Hurry here. However - whatever I do next will likely pulse and pound.

i think.......
i hear 2 chords. Em & Esus#13 with a flattened 19th.

pretty cool Kevin. the acoustic grooves along and the jazzier (avant garde) piano lines are pretty cool in that they work within the framework

Good ears
I call it Em dissed with diminished expectations. Actually it's an open E something 1st/open - 2nd/7th - 3rd/8th - 4th/9th - 5th/open - 6th/open
Any idea what it is?

everything starts with an E
It's odd. I was just thinking last night about a new MJ challenge where everyone writes a song that starts with E.
You've just got the ball rolling!
Great use of sounds, textures and drones.
I felt the snare rolls at the end of the bar should have been a bit 'bigger' or a different snare sound and maybe 'tightened' up a bit but apart from that a cool track
cheers

I eq's the drums a little duller than
they were - less top end and crack to the snare. They were very present before - as fr the timing - don't know how I might have changed that with these loops. Thanks for the comment and giving it thought. Let's do the E challenge.

colors and voices
everybody's got that little thing they play as soon as they pick up the guitar. reminds me of zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance, how pirsig tries to take apart the process of selection that occurs when you walk down a street filled with sound but only hear certain things - why do you sub consciously make the decision to pay attention to those certain things? you kind of do the same thing here with that little pattern you for whatever reason always bring to the guitar. very cool concept dude.

i'm all about minor these days, and while I tend to prefer Eb to E, I can still think this is as lovely as the art work representing it. I really love the bass in this - an understated soft support holding it all together. I swear that picture is shifting before my very eyes as I listen to this for the second time. Great effecty thingies on the pencilled in parts. I don't think this is Peculiar at all, or maybe it is in a wonderfully "through the looking glass off with their heads" sort of way. I LOVE it! downloaded thanks.

I have to say that Em may be my favorite key. I really like the acoustic guitar bits, and the sort of off-kilter drum track and the piano really make it for me...

the long fade
This has to have the longest fade I've heard in a while 45 seconds! Leaves you hanging in an odd way. Em is a fav of mine as well. Wanna put a onerous tone on any just a bit too happy-go-lucky pop number? Just throw in an EM and all is wrong with the world again. makes my day. A wonderful meandering pastoral passage.

E ba gum,
Yorkshire take on the whole thing...slightly surreal with a hint of melancholy but nicely held together and I love the tick tock clocky sound and vibe to it...Almost Hitchcockian...if you get my drift, very nice Bud.

Different
Very disharmonic, progressive patterns, very cool guitar performance, as well as well crafted piano riffs and melodies. Have hints of blues, but adds so may other levels into it, classic, jazz'esque, indie... Great concept, very poetic. Love the song art.

COOL
With so many of us guitarist Dropping our E's to D's, Im glad you kept it at E....Definately can hear that Martin tone in the D-18. i love the feeling of "Air-iness" to this, kinda leaves room for imagination as the notes fly by. I hope you understand what Im saying! Great job!

Quite peculiar indeedy.
I was just practicing on some Em fingerstyle acoustic blues. I'm not much of a finger-er. But this gambit of yours resonates. For some reason those open chord creations like you've got at the 0:28-sec. mark take me back to Zep III (side 2). On the song art: those floating.. um -- what do you call 'em -- "particledots" ... suit the mood well.
