Description

Warning: If you want melody, structure and (dare I say) maturity, try "Turn to Me". I debated posting due to the primitive cheese factor. But I wanted to share the moment ~ and the era ~ that rushed-in when first plugged-in the 1964 Teisco I just rehabbed after 20-plus years in mothballs. (Click to MJ forum w/photo gallery.)

This song is dedicated to rock 'n' roll and fast cars with tall 3rd gears. It's also a companion to my prior roadfaring retro-fest, "Yo! What Exit?"

On the structure, or lack of it: It's all over the map (ouch). I had no more than the title/chorus in mind when the glue dried, the strings went on and I plugged-into my old Fender tuber. The overdriven, spring reverb-drenched center track, was the first track I did. Unedited, it forms the only structure here. NOTE: The first fraction of a second -- the word "Uno!" -- is cut off. if it bugs you, pop me your e-mail and I'll send you the fixed track in any format.

How about...
... amorphous. That's a kinder term, I guess. I knew I wanted to do with that recurring "chorus thing" ... because it's been in my head for years, waiting for inspiration -- which came with the fixer-upper axe. In between those 1-2-3-5's however are lots of unpredictable and shifting patterns -- I thought they'd draw ire. We'll see how it goes...

Who needs 4 anyways?
That's the kind of song that would make an Arkansas inbred idiot savant jealous! That makes me wish that I still had my ’77 Camaro and was driving it 120 miles an hour which was about 30 miles an hour faster than the safe limit of the car. If I remember right that car was missing 4th gear. Pretty cool licks on that clean channel Bob! You’re conjuring up some mighty fine twang there as well. Clean guitar done right can produce some pretty hard edge; I'm liking the edge here a lot.

HAHA! Tempie... I know! Funny thing, The thing I was thinking of redoing most was that weird lead stuff at 2:25 -- the extra measure just got tossed in there on the fly and I just let it stay.

You make me glad I posted this. If this tune goes over, I'll let "Spazz" of the guitar closet more often. The owner of the '30s Ford pickup pictured above is a local... I wonder if that ride magically transports him to wherever those go-go girls hang out. Gotta run now, a new episode of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in is bound to be on any minute...

	I am Tarzan! Julian, I'm guilty as charged. Mixing... surprise!
You would NOT believe that my most reliable monitors are my stock Apple iPhone earbuds, which I press into my ears with practiced force for a more balanced sound than the nosebleed-expensive Vienna Acoustics bookshelves or piece-of-crap Klipsch ceiling cans. (I have big, ancient EV Sentry 505s but a tweeter's blown.) I am so glad that after trying to be "cool" and/or "mature" for a few tunes, my fun side's being well received, too.

Yup, single coils. I was surprised at how little noise they generated and how much sound they pulled off the stings. Almost disappointed! There's a few close-ups of the pickups in the MobileMe gallery I posted, and linked (here in the forums.) CRAMPS: Oh, yeah. Surfin' Bird's the best cover ever. I thought I might want elements of the Clash, Richard Hell and Dick Dale. That didn't happen but next time I'll have to start with a clear melody in mind (then modulate it a bunch!) Thanks, --B

This brings me
back to when i was going to high school and the beach music was the scene. Lots of that surfin fender type reverb. Love the depth when you go wild with tremelo super strummin and thumpin. Your really bring me back to early Who and Jan and Dean mixed togther. When I ever I hear that electric guitar reverb it takes me back.

Maybe even a little Bird is the Word too :{

Fun dance stuff. Would go good in the Bay Area on the TV show KOFY with Jim Gabbert.

He is quite well know disc jockey that does KGo and TV and has a famous 50's dance show. But this music has that 50's and 60 sixties excitement that a lot of us baby boomers crave for. We really do I think, at least a lot of us i think !

Way to go.

Again, enjoy that excitement and bring me back to those precious exciting times at least the good times I should say ! ! :)

Considering slow surf.
Right on, Bill. Contemporary music today suffers from an almost total lack of sweat! It's all poser imagery and no analog & wetware effort. I may try a surf tune, but only if I can nail the arrangement and have something original and melodic to say. Slow, on the Strat, with the tube amp again with spring reverb and trem, and slow and super-clean (not on this guitar). So where in the world can I get surf loops?

and fun. Thaks for the visit to my page, you're right without the random click, how would we discover such incredible gems such as this. The tone on that Teisco is out of this world. They don't make 'em like that - amp modeling be damned! I, personally am a BIG fan of songs with no structure (just check out my catalog if you doubt me) so this just hit me in the right spot. Tons of energy and drama. Not a hold barred, and me like-y. The bass solo at 3:49 or so is a kicker. Schweeeeet! Glad I found ya.

Well, there's Fibonacci of The Sequence ~ each number is the sum of the previous two as in 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377... ~ then there's the long-defunct band, The Fibonaccis. But you're right, this one's just for crazy, nonsensical fun. As in: "She took her Daddy's car and drove the hamburger stand, now.... and spilled booze and who knows what else all over that tight sweater.

This tune does not waste any time getting right down to it. Solid rock n roll from start to finish. You've got so many cool things going on in this song it takes multiple listens just to hear it all. I think you sell yourself short with the lack of structure concept, cuz sometimes that's what you need to do with rock n roll!
