Description
Kevlar sent me a mix of this song a while back and it sat in my undeliverable file for some reason - then I found it a few weeks ago. For a while I added to his mix but then opted to do a new one from scratch and he sent me his vocals only - effected as you hear them here.
Then it took a while to find the right groove to suit. I even tried dub before going for a pretty basic dance club feel with raw guitars.
So here it is:
kevlar of JOAN - lead vocals
bud - backing vocals, multiple live guitar tracks, bass and drum loops

I suggest you play it loud while waving your arms over your head and shaking your booty. Unless you're driving.

PS - back in the early eighties in the East Village we recorded every Sunday on four track after our respective bands broke up. Then Kev moved upstate and formed JOAN - which was my intro to MacJams.
Picture was taken during a visit last year in Greenwood Cemetery near my home in Brooklyn..

This is almost neo-post-schmance...
...and an almost textbook example of the genre, perhaps its masterwork...

Does it need cowbell? Yes. Of course it does. But what doesn't?

I really like the faint guitar bits grooving in the background...

bud said 2673 days ago (April 25th, 2010)
It's a little like
ultra-deep-schmance too. It takes a discerning ear like yours to pick up on the difference - and the faint guitar grooves. Thanks for dropping by. You can pt your arms down now.
See what Cher started?

Nice one
Pretty modern sound to it. Definitely one of those club tracks you hear on the radio.

i am
way too good at wasting time. what's schmance? i like it - probably Ed is right and it would be better with cowbell, but....i think you picked the perfect groove. and excellent guitar work. what's a little more time wasted? at least it was fun!

There are a few other things
tucked in the MJ archive that we've done over the last few years - but not enough. We did get to share a stage with our respective bands last Spring though. That was great.

My comment
When I faved did not seem to take! This is cool... What vocal effect is that?

bud said 2672 days ago (April 26th, 2010)
I was probably correcting spelling or something
The effect is autotune - with maybe some flanger thrown in. I'll have to ask.

Too cool
The dance music I know doesn't sound this heavy. I would have liked disco a lot more if it were like this (the only disco I think I ever liked was Chic, and the guitars were the reason for that too).
Besides the overall heavy feeling of the back, the congas and that talking guitar around 3:00 made me smile.
The vox... mmh, that would be my only complain. I know, I know... that's the *only* way dance is supposed to be sang these days... yeah, since Cher.

tree food
i like the guitars man, how they come in and fade out...all those subtly different parts. especially when the dry and distorted start to duel around 1:25. really dig those little wah blips too. usually i'm not a fan of that auto tune sound on the vocals, but i think it works here - it's fun, and that's the point with a tune like this right? also, how cool is the line 'back in the early 80's in the East Village' ... sounds like you and lou reed were hanging out smoking over coffee while he wrote heavenly arms on a napkin.

Kevlar was having fun with the autotune - and I rolled with it
glad you enjoyed the mix and thanks for stopping by. BTW - I'm not as cool as your fantasy Lou Reed projects. But then - in NYC - his cool came into question after a while.

I'm in my office
waving my arms above my head and shaking my desk chair for all I'm worth... I like the ambient feel of this whole mix, paired with the thumping bass, and the guitars are super-cool.

I've got no idea what schmance is but this is cool. The vocoder effect works pretty well here, vocs sound good with it. guitar lines are cool, production sounds great.

Great groove
heavy and dirty works well with that effected vocal although it would have been nice to have some un-effected vocal as well.

Very clever and enjoyable.

Great Atmosphere
The vocal production alone creates a great atmosphere. And while the percussion groove is pure dance club, the bass and guitars add a ton of rock edge that breathes added freshness.

Crank the Volume
I took your advice to heart and cranked the volume all the way up before I hit "play", and I am so glad I did. This is just fantastic! The ethnic bongo/conga (?) drum addition gives the song a must-dance groove. Vocals are great too.
