Description

I wrote this shortly after A Light Went Out. Let's just say something else came up. I wrote both the words and music and did all the playing and singing with the exception of the drums, which of course are AppleLoops.

my favorite musicians are always singer/songwriter/players. I know you went out of your comfort zone here, out on a limb, it's scary putting something so personal like this out there. Funny I just wrote those words and glanced over to see you chat the same sentiment... anyway, obviously a very personal song, beautiful sincerity in your lyrics, I love the way you keep everything clean in the mix on the instruments and your vocals. One of my biggest pet peeves in life is manipulation and this song to me is about you not wanting to do that in any way, you seem like a wonderful person Andrew, thank you for being so willing to put your self out here!

As for the outro.....the return to the acoustic guitar was, in my mind, an attempt to return the song to where it started. I guess I never consider my guitar playing of long outro worthy. nice gentle piece
Thoughtful lyrics, gentle music, nice singing... fits together well. The chorus might want to have vocal harmony added to stand out more, and at 1:26, the guitar comes in quite suddenly, maybe ease into it a bar earlier? The suddenness of the loud guitar seemed to halt the momentum for me. Other than that, very enjoyable.

I appreciate the thoughtful and honest feedback. I tried a variety of background vocal arrangements ranging from harmonizing every word to the just the tail end of each phrase. In the end, I opted to just harmonize the last phrase of the verses and chorus. I think i just heard that as suiting my limited range the best. As Dirty Harry said, "A man's got to know his limitations." That guitar you refer to is the guitar solo I assume. Typical of a rock guitarist sometimes we're just too loud and play too much :)

I Actually Did!
There were several earlier mix-downs with a variety of vocal arrangements. I tried harmonizing every word. I multi-tracked the lead and harmony vocals. I tried harmonizing the last part of each phrase. In the end I opted to just harmonize the end of just a few phrases. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. You should call yourself THE TEACHER, because you can teach many of us how to be as versatile and dynamic as you are- school teacher writing Thin Lizzy tunes for 1st graders and next great hits like these.

Many people write songs about things in their life- war, crime, love, hate. This isn't a song, it's music, and it moves me.

Years ago I would introduce myself first as a musician. Later in life, I don't know exactly when, I started to introduce myself as a teacher. Somewhere along the way the teaching took priority in my own self view. So your comments are very gratifying. However, I never considered myself a writer. Oh....We think alike my friend.
Yup. Struggled with how to do the first verse with the little retard at the end. After several failed attempts I decided to leave several bars out front blank. Recorded all the other tracks to the drum loops. Then went back when I was done and recorded the first verse guitar and vocals on separate tracks. Then I dragged the rest of the tune closer to that first verse until I heard what I wanted. This technology amazes me. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Thanks Fran! Coming from a guitarist of your caliber those are very kind words indeed. Line6 amp modeling software amazes me. The rhythm parts are a model of a Vox AC30 (that bell like sound) and the solo is their model of a Marshall 50 Watt Plexi. I own more gear in my Mac then I ever had in my whole life. And it all fits in a briefcase. Thanks so much for listening.

I'm very pleased you stopped by to listen and leave such thoughtful comments. I've listened to the music you've posted and have great respect for your magnificent work. As I told both Eduard and Charles, there was a time in the recording process when I tried additional harmonies. But when I listened to the various vocal arrangements I tried I decided to trim it down to what you hear in the final version. I could have reached out to singers with greater ranges for help. But since it was a rather personal statement I wanted to complete it on my own. That created a situation where I had to work within my own limitations. Thanks again! It is much appreciated.

Right from the first note, I enjoyed this song very very much, indeed. That little "hitch" in the guitar rhythm is so compelling (and I love the way you bring it back again at the end) and interesting and then you use it so effectively throughout the whole number. I also think that you have an uncanny sense of what absolutely works in the symmetry of a song: you choose a simple melody that you are unafraid of repeating without any particular further development and it just somehow says enough. It's rare to find a song with such spare elements that simply covers all the bases with such care and such security...And (lest I forget), your comfortable singing style, playing, and understated arrangement all lend to the beauty of an exquisitely-rendered production. Wow!

I like the acoustic with your vocals before the drums and everything come in, nice guitar sounds and another nice chord progression. I love the guitar solo, great tone and playing.
