Description

I thought I would share a song our band BITTERSWEET (a regional touring band out of Minneapolis) wrote and recorded in 1968 or 69. We were 14 to 17 years old at the time, and played mostly original music.

The drums, lead, rhythm, bass, keyboards, and 1st vocal track were recorded in 1 take with about 10 mics (or less) onto a 2 track reel to reel (TAPE!) then played back on that tape deck and re-recorded to a second tape machine while the vocal tracks were added. We repeated the process for the second vocal track. Then again for more guitars, and whatever.

We thought we were in heaven when our drummer bought a 4-channel deck with "simul-sync".

I have posted this for a couple reasons- first, it is an original composition, and second, to help us all appreciate have programs like Garage Band or Logic Pro where we can add as many tracks as we wish and edit, cut, and paste every note.

Don't miss the ending- we had left the tape running and recording after laying down the last vocal track and everyone in the control booth started singing and talking. Oops! I think we were "happy"... and had the munchies But the result is funny. ENJOY!!

I'm (almost) speechless
Wow! Thank you everyone for the great comments. One thing that is so neat about this song is that there is absolutely no processing... but it has that highly compressed tight sound from being over 6 generations of copying from one tape to the next as we added tracks (overdubs).

Glad you enjoyed it - I'll dig up a few more, including the 45rpm record we released in 1973 or 74.

Anyway? 1968?! Sounds like you guys were ahead of the curve. What were you listening to back then? This is remarkably sophisticated for a bunch of kids. Sheesh. I'm sure that the sequence starting at 4:05 was later used by other bands, but damned if I can remember who. I listened to this last night, was knocked out, but was too worn out to comment. I'm back for another listen. Amazing stuff. And isn't it great that you still have this music 40 some years later to listen to and reminisce? So, Greg, which one is you?

Zero in Twos means....
I am at the far end of the line.

I am going to have to contact our old drummer who has a much better memory than me regarding where that phrase came from. Heck, none of the lyrics made any sense, I think it just rhymned.

We were listening to Yes, ELP, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, James Gang, Flash, 10 Years After... etc.

We did mostly original material (if you listen to the others tunes I have posted here you'll hear variation of some of them). Made it tough to play high school dances, but the college kids loved us.We did learn enough Top 40 songs to make it thru 3 sets. People often thought we were "too far off the deep end" but we loved the technical sounding stuff.

If you figure out who the ending sounds like, let me know. I think it was mostly a Beatles thing- like at the end of "I am the Walrus".

In retrospect, it is pretty amazing that we got all that sound right out of real instruments with no midi, no processing other than an echoplex and stomp boxes for guitar and bass. 14-17 years old
When we first started playing gigs, my older brother had to drive us to them because my parents wouldn't let me drive pulling the equipment trailer. When we played clubs that served alcohol, we had to go to "the green room" on our breaks since we were under 21 and not allowed in the bar. But that didn't stop us... we brought our own booze with and drank during our breaks, or poured the booze into soda bottles we drank on stage.

Thanks! We studied the prog rock groups like ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Flash, Triumvirat, and Gentle Giant, just to name a few. I just really love the "tape compression" from all the overdubs... These tracks even sounded good on an 8-track player (anyone remember them?)
