Moving 'Forward'... (MissChaos cover)

Description
About 3 years ago, I came across a beautiful number, Forward, by our very own MissChaos here at MacJams. It's always been a favorite of mine ever since... I'm a sucker for such dark and sad pieces.

I wanted to have a look at its score and possibly work out a guitar arrangement of it, an idea inspired from Pierre Bensusan's work in his "Intuite" album, so I asked MissChaos if she can provide me with the MIDI track of the song. After a few days, she kindly emailed it. I ran the track through Guitar Pro, which turned the MIDI track into a full score; notes and guitar tablature. I fixed a few bars of the tabbed guitar score, finding some economic substitutions for the big stretches. As I started learning it, however, I became frustrated with the not-so-well-arranged guitar parts, my fault of course, so I tried to work it out by ear, using the score for reference when needed.

Needless to say, it took me months to get it just right, and I decided to shorten the song using the main melody of each part in a way that allows the listener to grasp a "full" composition. So... here's a 2:27-minute long guitar arrangement of a 4:44-minute long piano masterpiece.

Personally, I enjoyed the challenge of 'arranging' this number and it quickly became a favorite of mine to play. Working on it gave me tons of ideas about composing and arranging (so, stay tuned for some more in the future). ;)

In case you haven't heard MissChaos' work before, I advise you to go through her list of songs posted here. You won't be disappointed; she has some of the finest qualities of music anywhere on the net.

Thank you MissChaos for allowing me to work on this fantastic number of yours. You translated your feelings quite well into those notes of "Forward." I'm sorry for your loss. And... don't be a stranger, we miss you here!

I hope you like it!

Kind regards,
- Yeman

In awe
Yeman, I'll be forever in awe of this piece. I still can't understand how you took this rather messy piano piece and made it so perfect with your guitar. I can honestly say I like your version better! Even the emotive way you play this brings back all the feelings I had when I played it. It's always a pleasure listening to your music. (feel free to transpose any of my other songs!) Thank you for being a friend all these years. I hope to be back here again soon. All my best, MissC

like a velvet glove
Yeman, this gorgeous piece fits your guitar so nicely... and yes, I know the incredible work that went into re-scoring this for guitar, and practicing and getting it just perfect... and you've done it. MissC's original is breathtaking, and this arrangement elevates it even further, beyond any words I have. All I can say to both of you is thank you for such soulful music. Superb music choice, playing and recording. Sigh.

Drakonis

Remarkable.
In so many ways, Yeman, you are a gift to all the world. There is a maturity about you that belies your youth. Your emotions shine through your playing and it is a privilege to listen to your work. Miss Chaos could not find a better musician or a more understanding young man than you. We are lucky to be able to share in your growth. Sheer beauty. Thank you. :)

Super work here
love the flow and how vary the tempo with the emotion of the song like a wave. Great use of harmonics without going too fancy with it. And I know how you get that great tone... from your fingers. 90% of tone comes from the player, the rest is handled by the mic and equipment. Amazing how much better the tone of a guitar or amp is, when in the hands of someone that can really play. Love the fingerstyle technique and you are sounding better and better.

You know
I listened to this, then read the comments, then saw your age!
I'm extremely impressed. I could barely strum 3 chords at your age, would never have guessed such mature playing could come from such young hands. It is obvious you have put your time in in the practice room, I believe people are gifted and surely you are Yeman, but obviously you have nurtured that gift well, great job!

Beautiful rendition. Sounds like it was made for the guitar = a fanstastic cover in my book. Excellent 'touch' as I would expect and fine recording too. Nice to read the details of your conversion process too, thanks for adding that. Off to listen again.
