About 3 years ago, I came across a beautiful number, Forward, by our very own MissChaos here at MacJams. It's always been a favorite of mine ever since... I'm a sucker for such dark and sad pieces.
I wanted to have a look at its score and possibly work out a guitar arrangement of it, an idea inspired from Pierre Bensusan's work in his "Intuite" album, so I asked MissChaos if she can provide me with the MIDI track of the song. After a few days, she kindly emailed it. I ran the track through Guitar Pro, which turned the MIDI track into a full score; notes and guitar tablature. I fixed a few bars of the tabbed guitar score, finding some economic substitutions for the big stretches. As I started learning it, however, I became frustrated with the not-so-well-arranged guitar parts, my fault of course, so I tried to work it out by ear, using the score for reference when needed.
Needless to say, it took me months to get it just right, and I decided to shorten the song using the main melody of each part in a way that allows the listener to grasp a "full" composition. So... here's a 2:27-minute long guitar arrangement of a 4:44-minute long piano masterpiece.
Personally, I enjoyed the challenge of 'arranging' this number and it quickly became a favorite of mine to play. Working on it gave me tons of ideas about composing and arranging (so, stay tuned for some more in the future). ;)
In case you haven't heard MissChaos' work before, I advise you to go through her list of songs posted here. You won't be disappointed; she has some of the finest qualities of music anywhere on the net.
Thank you MissChaos for allowing me to work on this fantastic number of yours. You translated your feelings quite well into those notes of "Forward." I'm sorry for your loss. And... don't be a stranger, we miss you here!
I hope you like it!
Kind regards,
- Yeman
