WAITING (For The Rain To Fall) w Mike Watkins

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
The second new MJ track from my album "Signs Of Life". You can listen, download and buy here.

Well, it was in drought here for what seemed forever. I’d already written one drought song (“The Big Dry” on jiguma dreaming), but decided another was in order. I was also after an excuse to play some blues on my Telecaster.

This is written from the point of view of a farmer who has had to send his family to stay with friends/relatives "in town", leaving him alone most of the time.

Between writing the song and waiting for other tracks on it to be finished we had drought breaking rain. So it’s kind of redundant (although I’m considering sending the Australian government a bill for drought-breaking services!).

This is pretty much a straight blues with a little variation of my own. Thanks to Gus Washbourne for introducing me to some new guitar chords. Thanks to Mike Watkins for the great drum track!

Lyrics
Haven’t had a night like this in so many years
Head keeps buzzing, doesn’t stop
Door keeps banging with the wind
Air con dripping, so damn hot
I got your face in my head
Got my head on your pillow
And I’m waiting for the rain to fall

Losing my sleep, losing my battle
Seems like years you’ve been gone
Losing my mind, can’t get back in the saddle
Think I’m finding myself then I’m gone
I got your face in my head
Got my head on your pillow
And I’m waiting for the rain to fall

Fields of green and days of rain
Maybe I’ll see you sometimes
Kids in the yard
You’d make me happy
Days of hope and days of rain
Days of knowing who I am
Days of peace
When the rain starts to fall

I’m changing my mind like I’m changing the channel
Head in my hands, hands are filling with tears
I’ve been hitting rock bottom, deep as the ocean
I’ve been giving in to all of my fears
I got your face in my head
Got my head on your pillow
And I’m waiting for the rain to fall

excellent blues from yous

all good and some nice cutting loose on the solos. i also dig that the chorus has a pop style in contrast to the blusier verses. excellent tune Neil.

The chorus
seems to be a matter of taste. Our drummer reckons it spoils a perfectly good blues tune, where I like it because it lets me off pretending I can play blues guitar for a few bars ;)
Thanks for having a listen.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Awesome song writing chops, Neil
Love the Tele sound and phrasing you've going on in this. Clean soulful lead playing, at it's best.Love the drum track, please pass that on to tom Mike Watkins for me.

Great blues number here, Neil

Hey Ed
thanks for stopping by for a listen, and for the comment. As a bass player, I'm pretty pleased with the guitar parts ;) Mike played really well on this, and I'm particularly pleased that I was able to do his kick dru justice. I often battle with getting punch at the lower frequencies.
Best wishes from Oz Ed - thinking of you.

Very stylish and soulful, with a very crisp and clean production. The Tele sounds really nice, and your riffs very effectively convey the pain and distress.

Well done work, Neil. I always enjoy your music and this song is no exception. Thanks!

Cool minor blues over some interesting jazzy chords. Liked the lead break. Liked the way the bridge contrasted with the minor feel of the verse, seems to fit well. Bass and drums are holding down the bottom well. Apropos to nothing this is comment #1000 for me. Sorry man, no prize will be awarded. :)

Highly enjoyable
The one I dig with you is that you go your own way, you keep your own style, and you develop the style, and you do it sooo good, and you write great song, and original ones.

No I lied. That was not one things. There are lots of thing I dig with your productions.

Johannes!
It's great to have you back around the place. The main reason I keep my own style is that it's all I can do really - but I do enjoy doing it of course. This was an opportunity to play some guitar - getting a little more confident after playing live these days.
I guess you're looking forward to summer - best wishes from the Deep South (where it's getting colder - although we were swimming in the ocean yesterday).
Thanks for the nice words.

your voice
is nontraditional for a blues tune, reedy and edgy and i think it actually adds more blues to the song than if you'd had a growly old black guy sing it. maybe you ARE a growly old black guy, in that case congrats on breaking the mold. it's also much higher concept than most blues tunes, and that draws the listener in too. also really like how the chorus lifts away from the blues structure, like a moment in the blues where you remember the good times and snap out of it briefly...all in all a very intimate listening experience.

"growly old black guy"
Craig, thanks for having a listen and commenting. My drummer likes the song - except for the chorus - whereas I think it works pretty well. I've never been much into blues, but this sort of seemed a good thing to do - but I couldn't have the whole song grumpy and .... well .... bluesy. So the more poppy chorus seemed right. My voice is pretty non-traditional in most genres, but especially so in blues.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

What's not
to love about this? Love the tone on that guitar and the sparse chord design that allows for the vocals... harmonies spot on and you always write good lyrics.... organ blends in so subtley.... sounds real class Neil, regards M

This is, for one thing, a very well written song. You seem right at home with your style here. Naturally, I love the bass, but the other guitar work was really good too. Drums were great. Thanks for the post Neil. Terry
