Don't Be So Blind

Description
My original plan for this one was to present it as stripped down as possible, a single acoustic guitar accompanying a single vocal. But I never could get takes I was happy with. So then I decided to try a band approach. Wasn't happy with that either. Changed the key and revoiced the chords. Tried the stripped down approach again. Still wasn't happy. Went back to the band thing. Kind of liked the sound and feel of the drum loops with the rhythm guitar sound. Started to feel a little better about it. So ready or not..........

Lyrics
First Verse
Don’t like to look back,
On the man I was
Selfish and hurtful,
To the ones I loved
A foolish young man
Not thinking at the time
You’d have to live with it,
Don’t be so blind

Second Verse
Like a flash of light
Something triggers memories
Never my finest
Shake my head in disbelief
How could I have said that?
Wasn’t thinking at the time,
You’ll have to live with it
Don’t be so blind

First Bridge
Eventually you’re gonna realize
If you’re lucky anyway
Just beware when you punish yourself
The penalty exceeds the crime
You’ll have to live with that,
Don’t be so blind

Second Bridge
But it’s only me that can’t forget
Most forgave me long ago
Would they remember,
If I brought it up now?
I wasn’t thinking at the time
I’ll have to live with that,
Don’t be so blind

Last Verse
I guess he’ll stay with me
Foolish young man from the past
Reminding me there are,
Some things you can’t take back
I little voice I’ll hear
Perhaps from time to time
You’d have to live with that,
Don’t be so blind
You’d have to live with that,
Don’t be so blind
You’d have to live with that,
Don’t be so blind

Love the ringing guitar notes
and the strummed chords seem to wash across the sands... really like the soft sound of this. I think the drums are OK except for the 2&4 snare(?) hit which seems very loud, crisp and out of place for this more gentle song. Your singing is great, backing is super, well-fit lyrics. Good stuff!

But I just dug that snare drum so much I decided what the hell, kind of my power ballad. Thanks for listening. You're always good about leaving honest and constructive comments. Thank you for that.

Oh-Uh
Now the two of you have me thinking I should change it! :) I think that's just the bassist in me coming through. There's nothing better for a bassist than locking in with a strong drummer. The whole time I was playing the bass track I was digging that drummer. I guess that's why I come here! Honest feedback.

Shades of Stevie Wonder..
Especially in the verse and break--just has that certain resonance of his, which of course, is delightful. This is a beautiful and well crafted song, with a memorable melody line and soft, well joined lyrics. Of course, your playing and vocal were (as always) sublime. I personally think this is one of your very best Andrew. Thanks for keeping the bar raised! Michael Photobucket

don't be so blind
hi andrew. this is very well produced and it conforms to all the usual construction 'rules', and in the listening reminded me of a seventies album track (from an established recording artist i hastily add), and it's good to hear you finally putting your voice up there so clear and in front of everything. it makes me wonder why you've been having problems with it. are you happy with it now? i wasn't put off by any percussion issues; for me it rolled along...easy on the ear...but perhaps without going to enough places to really stand out and excite.
alackbass said 1109 days ago (June 6th, 2010)
Thank You!
Wow, what a thoughtful and detailed comment. Those singer/songwriter guys are always in my mind when I write something like this. I think it starts with having an acoustic guitar in one's hand while you write. It's a similar approach to many of those "established recording artists." As for the vocal, I hear pitch and phrasing issues I wished weren't there. But aren't we all our own worst critic. But despite my own concerns, I've learned (through my participation here at MJ) to take the risk, post it, and let the community decide. The support of artists like yourself encourages me to forge ahead. Thank you again.

Since you are
way in the top of my favorite macjammers and a singer/songwriter/guitar player (triple threat) which is what I live for in music, I had to listen several times, I know you are your own worst critic and didn't ask for critiques in the description, and I see why in your responses, this is one of those that I write a lot of, for the art of it, more for therapy than anything else, you wrote this because you had to eh? To me this reminds me a lot of Joe Walsh and the Eagles, The lyrics are so spot on for us that have experienced that same revelation, trust me I'm one, also my own worst critic, I try to leave all of that at the cross, your harmonies are stellar and the layering of your vocals is perfect, you have a great tone to your voice Andrew very nice to hear it up front, but as the good book says you don't have to live with it, forgiveness is a wonderful thing, especially forgiving yourself as you elude to, by far my favorite post of yours'...... you are exploding with creativity! Run with it my friend!

Wow, I really appreciate all the time and thought you put into your comments. But for the record, I'm always willing to receive and invite critiques. I assume when I post those will (and should) come. So always feel free to critique honestly.

That vocal tone came after dozens of takes and loads of EQ. So I guess it was worth it. As for the lyrics, being a musician can be an inherently selfish pursuit. I assumed others at MJ would relate. I'm glad you got it. Thanks again.

Don't Be So Blind
Nice relaxed groove. The guitar line is simple but elegant and pulls the song along. I agree with Eduard on the snare hit, a little too aggressive here. Maybe a wood block or rimshot instead. I like the lyrics and your vocs.

I'm Torn
I'm sure you saw my response to Eduard and that I did consider a rim shot. So a part of me agrees with both of you. Can't say I considered a wood block. I'll hold on to that one for a future project. Thank you. But another part of me agreed with Julian in that the drums made it "roll along" or as Bob put it provided a "pocket." The great thing about this do-it-yourself-recording thing is that the possibilities are endless. I'm particularly glad you liked the vocals and the lyrics. Those are by far the most personal parts and as a result the ones that were my greatest concern prior to posting.

lush guitar lead in...
Andrew, this is a perfect song. I'm not entirely sure what I mean by that, except everything fits so well, with you very pro vocals. the stripped down-ness of this tune is it's strength. Bass, guitar, drums all sit nicely in their own accessible place. By the star is your vox... love the harmonies.

Thanks so much Jack. I doubt I've ever done anything perfectly (just ask my wife). But I'm glad you like it. too bad....
... that by the time you realize that you're gonna have to live with things you've said and done or not done this you've all ready done the damage. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who drives themselves batty thinking about stuff like this. But you're so right when you say "But it’s only me that can’t forget". I've made a fool of myself trying to apologize for stuff that others don't remember and now I have those things to live with too. ANYWAY, love the song, lyrics, melody, harmonies, presentation, feel. You do agree that some variation might help it along. About the snare - I didn't read all the posts here so hope I'm not reiterating a previous idea but there was talk about the snare. I like the having the snare, I wish it had more "body" to the sound of it. I think you should try going between rim taps in a verse and snare in the bridge or something like that. Nice job overall, great tune!

alackbass said 1109 days ago (June 6th, 2010)
Wow, What a Thoughtful Comment!

You obviously spent some energy really thinking about the lyrics, and I appreciate that a great deal.

About the snare (by the way I love the little side discussion the snare has raised. It leads to others sharing alternate approaches I'll explore in future songs), I never really heard the song as a ballad, although I guess it did turn into one (or was always one). And while it may not have come through in my vocal, I always hear an angry subtext in the lyric (wanting to go back and slap around the younger version of myself). So that crisp, sharp snare just had that atmosphere. It was almost like having Chad Smith on drums. I just connected to it and moved on from drums to other things.

Thanks so much for listening and leaving such a thoughtful comment. Judging from your most recent song, you really know what you're talking about. Your kind words and thoughtful critic will guide future songs of mine. And I have your page bookmarked. I'll be exploring the rest of your work. Be on the lookout for my comments.

Tip Top
I like this. The production is crystal clear and beautifully transparent. I wish I had the voice to use the "stripped down approach." You certainly carry it off. The lyrics too impress. I like this ethic of the older man having a "perhaps," internal voice conversation with a younger version of himself. I've a peice in that vein myself but incomplete as yet. The solo guitar is really nice did you think to have snippets of it inter-vocals perhaps. Hard to call as your stated intention is simplicity. I think, as Drakonis said, a more flaffy snare or even a brushed sound might have sat better. For some reason I'm hearing Sheryl Crowe on backing vocals. We wish! huh?

Nice touch.. Well done.

As a matter of fact
I did toy with having the lead guitar fill in around the vocal in the last verse. Thought better of it when I realized I was just riffing on patterns and not really saying anything.

About that internal conversation: It would be so much better if the older man could have that conversation with the younger man before mistakes are made. Oh wait, I just realized, my father tried.

Man, I'll be afraid to ever use that snare sound again :)

Blind,,,
Andrew, this is really, really nice. I have been out of pocket and didn't catch this til now. Man, very nice! Your tonal instincts are great (must be the bass player in you) This feels light and airy, but full and your vocals and harmonies sound very nice. I do agree a bit with the assessment regarding the 2 /4 snare, maybe try the block or rims for the first verse and open it up as the song grows. It is a minor thing and in no way takes away from the quality of this effort.

I'm glad you like it. Please read the next part knowing that I'm smiling, glad you commented honestly, and appreciate the feedback. And most importantly I am in no way offended by your, or anyone else's comments about the snare. I come here for honest feedback, not dishonest praise.

One final (hopefully) point about the snare (loop): In my mind all of my posts are nothing more than demos. If the songs were to be taken further it would be by some other artist who would do their own arrangement. For me each song is like a college project, assigned by me, for my own composition/arranging class. I've handed this one in. Perhaps I deserve a B (B+) because according to the grading rubric I "used a stylistically inappropriate percussion track." I'm good with that.

There are just so many hours in a day. I could take an hour or two to change (perhaps improve) the drum track and repost it. Or I could spend that same time trying to write another (perhaps better) song and apply the feedback I received throughout my time as a member here to that new composition. The choice of how best to spend that time is a no-brainer for me.

Again, I have great respect for your work and musicianship and value your (and all the other) opinions posted here. Until I joined MJ I had never written, recorded, and published any of my own original music. I'm growing as a musician because of the support and constructive feedback I receive from the MJ community. That's a gift, even when others would do something differently than I did.

Peace :)

I completely understand...
I like the honest feedback, negative and positive, it allows me to get better. These are our personal ideas and work, and there have been times that I don't agree with some of the assessments of my songs, or parts of my songs (they are like our children in a way). I mean I don't even share most of these with my band mates. You are a fantastic musician and I always look forward to your new releases and feel a bit of kinship with you knowing you too are a true bassist at heart. I think, you can see by the outpouring of comments on this song that it is fine work, and that the snare is a non-issue. Peace brutha!

Smooth Jazz
This song sounds like a David Pack (Ambrosia) solo song that a Smooth Jazz station would play between instrumentals. Your drum program is super clean and fits

I agree with the comments about needing a fill be it sax, which is always welcomed, or a tasty George Benson-like guitar or if you know a bad-assed B-3 player with the touch.

Re lyrics: We've ALL had those moments that still make us cringe and truth is the folks that witnessed it will throw it back at you given the chance. Don't give it to them.

Just to get that snare issue out of the way - it kinda stuck out in the beginning, but it kinda grows on you. By the time it finished I had started digging it. So what I'm saying is that I don't know what to say.

But as to the song itself, I really liked it.

i'm a big fan of that 70's adult soft rock radio sound
just so relaxed man, very cool approach. I like the whispery backups, the sparse playing (those jazzy chords and that nice warm les paul tone). The format dovetails well with the confessional nature of the lyrics, makes for a kind of intimate conversation. I dig it.

Outstanding song writing Andrew
And the music perfectly fits the song. The guitar sounds sweet on this my friend, as do the other instruments and the mix.

Great piece of work. I could hear this on the radio and not be surprise at all. As a matter of fact I look forward to that.

Killer
production.... which tells me I have enough equipment and software so now I guess I'll have to learn how to use it properly. Or maybe go back to GB ;) This is such a well done song on all points. My only thought was the drums seemed a touch too digital. Maybe a bump around 200 hz and a roll off between 15 and 20 khz would warm them up. Just a thought. Great production writing and performance Andrew.
Peace

Thank You
I appreciate your kind words. Whether or not one has enough or the right equipment is relative to the sound you wish to make. I'm considering moving up to Logic when I purchase a new Mac sometime this summer. But then I know I haven't fully exploited all the potential of GB8 let alone version 9 that would be on my new Mac. Considering it comes standard, I have to admit, GarageBand is pretty amazing stuff.

As for the drums (they've generated a lot of other comments), those are acoustic loops I downloaded from drums on demand. They were also the first time I tried to use the multiband compressor to get more headroom out of the drums rather than the standard preset compressor. I'll agree they didn't come out very warm sounding (although my Bose earbuds, headphones, and speakers tend to warm things up), but it was a sound I liked and just went with. The most important lesson I learned from those drum loops is MJ is filled with honest and talented musicians who know how to give constructive advise (like you gave here). That's the best part of being an MJ member.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen and comment so thoughtfully.

About the stripped down version, the acoustic guitar is so very unforgiving. Every squeak and inaccurate pick stroke sticks out. I just couldn't get past them, even though the process led to me noticing the same small imperfections in the stripped down recordings of Bob Dylan and Neil Young (which of course sound great). I just couldn't get past my own. Thanks again for listening and taking the time to comment.

This is an excellent song Andrew. I love the organic, laid back feel that makes it seem as if I'm right there in the room with you as you perform this. There were a couple of places where the vocals seemed just a little flat to my ear, but other than that, superb songwriting and performance and production.

cool, relaxed tune
I love the chorus harmony and the guitar solo: simple, clean, effective, and a nice juicy tone. Drakonis pointed out the ringing chords - I agree, they really give such a laid back mood, that unfortunately the drums do kinda upset. that said, the ruffle at 2:45 is just delicious!

You and Eduard weren't alone on the drum thing. The feedback I've received from this one has me considering drum loop choices a bit more carefully on others that are currently being worked on. A "Yah" for the Snare
Thanks Len for your kind words and taking the time to listen. The debate about the snare drum has taught me we all must go with what's pleasing to our own ears. Sure we can reach out to valued opinions prior to posting. But in the end whatever we post will not get universal approval. So all one can do is produce music that sounds good to their own ears. Hopefully some other ears will agree. Thanks again!

While this one was taking shape I tried all sorts of approaches to the rhythm guitar. It was rather ironic that in the end what seemed to work best was just simple single down-strokes on the downbeats. And thanks for the kind words regarding the vocal and the song itself.

... young compared to the rest here but I sure do realize that the radio played songs like this before. This is right up there with the late 80's/early 90's soft ballads... fantastic work!

in the case of a song, I'm never sure. And admittedly my abilities as a writer, arranger, producer, instrumentalist, engineer, and (most of all) singer are limited. So at some point you just have to stop and let the people decide. I'm glad you liked the tune. That's the most important thing to me.

How Do You Get That Guitar Sound?
This track is just crisply sweet! And I really like how that snare just keeps "smacking"! I love pronounced snare drum sounds! I read the comments about "rim shots" and I can hear some nice tight, smacking rim shots happening in this song in my imagination. And your vocal harmonies are solid. You've got a great tune here!!

I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the thoughtful feedback. As for the guitar sounds, it's Line6 PodFarm or GreaBox (I don't remember which, I use both). The guitar is my Les Paul Studio, both pickups, a Vox AC30 Model with some delay, reverb, and chorus. The solos the same rig but with the neck pickup. Then I added a little tremolo effect on that lead guitar when it adds upper register chord changes in the last bridge, verse, and chorus. Thanks again!

Oh
These are some very good lyrics and very good arrangement. Read some of the other comments, and yeah rim shot would work well on this one. Mellow it down a bit, and let the vocals and the lyrics stand out. Excellent vocals and and awesome ending. Good chorus! This is not my style, but like I've said many times before, when I hear something good, it can be anything as long as it has heart. This does for sure. I like this a lot actually, a bit of Bee Gees if I may stretch it! :) And, the lyrics speaks directly to me... Good job.

Oh you meant the room
On every track I sit on my sofa in my den. Lots of furniture and carpet so it's a dead space. As a result the acoustics of the room are pretty neutral. That allows me to use various reverbs in GarageBand to simulate room acoustics.

I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and leave a comment. Yeah, the snare was discussed quite a bit and I did receive PMs about an alternating snare/rim. I was just okay with how it is (realizing there are a multitude of other options that may be better than what I did). I find a song is never done. But I reach a point where I’m done with a song.

Great song!
This is excellent! Superb song writing with some great lyrics. A real pro sound with a good choice of instruments. I like the drums and I think you have the right sound on them for this song, a nice crisp sound on the snare is sometimes more favourable than a rim shot.
Lovely harmonies and a great vocal.
Very much enjoyed Andrew.
