Song Description

another attempt at this song...

i went with the Bukowski approach to a voice over...

nostalgia
a yearning for the past

returning home
ache

a medical condition
a form of melancholy

Lyrics
FortyTwoYearsAgo

the heat is pouring
down the street
outside

meanwhile i am
in here
cool
refreshed

watching
Valeri pouring
beers that vanish
to other places
in this fine old establishment

i sit alone

i can see out
across the street
through the window behind
me

reflected
in the mirror
hiding behind the bottles

times
have changed
indeed
the minis are
gone
replaced
by other minis

yet it seems
vaguely
possible
that the cycle will close
once again

the air
has that smell
of rebellion
the stifling
heat
amplifies it

we are in
a new place
yet i am
in an old place

i lift up
my sweating mug
and swallow hard

some things never
change

I Like it
But I'm still partial to version 1 because of it's guitar feature vibe. Although this does come off like a Doors' spoken word thing. And of course that's a very cool thing.

hearing this
as an entirely different song than V1, so I like it.
awesome - love the mix and the vocal tonality captures the feeling of space and place.

ya know
this gives me the impression of a intro to a movie where the actor reflects of his situation and surroundings.

the music track is great and has a great groove.

I agree with Andy
It a whole new song, and though I love the read, the music was more in my face on the other one. For me it's really a toss up. They're both great, but in different ways.

Kudos to ya Dave, for both of them.

behind the scenes
no apple loops anywhere in this one. the music is all software synths - pencil tooled drums, initially recorded from keyboard for guitar, bass and organ and then pencil tooled as well, especially the guitar lines

the voice track is the third take (had tons of trouble with tone of voice and my cat meowing) - i spent a lot of time shifting around the phrases to fit in exactly at the right time relative to the music, but i left the ordering as i originally had written the lyrics. i was trying to get the music to support the words

it's almost as if the music was written afterwards, but that's not the case

Fine job on the vocals Bill
and the backing s really solid and rich - I like the guitar tone and bongo additions. Haven't heard the other version yet - will do so now. Definitely get the Bukowski effect.

VW ....
I kinda fell in love with your spoken pieces when you worked on a tune of ours a couple of years ago so this one really geabbed my attention. Both versions are independent cool tracks ... dunno which one I like better ... but this one is impressive. Very cool track!

and...
back again to download....this goes under "poetry" playlist for my itunes.... but after reading thru the threads again i was captivated to be reminded how choices must be made in production. There is in the end a decision based on intent in the mind of the artist. The first time I listened to your "spoken word" rock I was impressed by the great musical track slightly back and your voice very up front and I remember thinking "wow" ... a mix like this is perfect for me. I am following your "word" brush and your delivery has fully pulled me in. Two cents from everyone ...Kudos VW

I like
the spoken word approach. You do it well...

HOWEVER, the voice-over is much too loud. The music has taken way too much of a back seat in this version my friend.

Be well!

i respect your opinion, but that's how i saw it needed to be. my next comment is an attempt to explain that.

thanks

Bill
Oppressive lyrics. Heavy stuff man.

Agree with Calchas about the mix of the voice. But I guess it's on purpose (don't know the Bukowski approach).

Anyway I made a remix myself with your two posts to put the back instrumental louder. The voice is not so clear as here, but I always can read the lyrics :-)

feel free to remix as you wish!

i felt that in this case the music and the voice couldn't both take a front seat. so the music had to be dropped back. in other songs, i had the space in the music to fit words between melodic phrases, but there's not enough space in this one. the best i could do is let the music peek through at dramatic points. i suppose i could have remixed the music, but then the song would have had to run perhaps twice as long to fit all the words. that certainly is feasible. maybe i should try that too, but it would probably run too long

on the other hand, i'd reverse the phase of the instrumental track and mix it with this version - that way i could cancel out all the music and find out just how poor the voice recording actually is! :-)

i don't know if/how Bukowski approached recording. i was after aspects of his written style - the disorienting line breaks, the detached observer stance, his way of looking at himself, others, and life itself - i didn't manage to put a good curse or two in there, that might have sealed the deal!

thanks

Now I either
see this in a black and white movie mode with a commentary... or I see you lying eyes closed on a therapists couch, relating what you're seeing mentally.... whichever it is I love this... the backgound music really does come forward as this goes along and I love the sounds there, cheers M

some things never change
for example
the slow
methodical poetry
and captivating music
that defies you
to ignore it
that welcomes
careful
thoughtful
interpretation.

Love the musical background (is that a notated or played guitar?) and the backing bassline. The deliberate delivery of your words was indeed captivating, and the imagery vivid. Well done, sir.
