Description
Old idea I wrote when I was about 15, recently remembered and given a fresh lick of paint as I recorded it.

A nod to Kiss' "100,000 years", Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a prayer" [edit: and Dire Straits "Money for nothing"], of which some elements seem to have crept in, despite being no real instruments in this piece at all. Apart from the drums (loops) it's all Logic midi instruments.

I was experimenting with the "Touch" function quite alot in this + some production reverse wooshes.

Enjoy this instrumental.

..been a while I know .. just a post to say "I'm alive" almost .. if only tupperware would keep things fresh for 25 years lol .. nah, I just remember this and thought I'd re-work it now, and save the results. Gave me an excuse to try those Logic functions I had as yet never tried.

Thanks

..always trying to learn new tricks on the sw side of things. Having a degree in Computer Science does admittedly help matters :) it almost went Prog rock in the arrangement .. thanks for listening and glad you stopped in. Cheers.

Truth: I've been continuing renovating my house exterior while the weather has allowed it and working pretty long hrs in general at work. Glad you enjoyed this .. "Touch" function is pretty powerful weapon in your Logic arsenal (nothing in GB like that). You basically can manipulate any parameters you might "track automate" live .. it records what you do with the mouse as a track automation .. hence "touch".

..sequeing (if there is such a word) was used rather exclusively in this: I've discovered it's merits when you can't write a decent bridge to save yourself .. lol. Glad you enjoyed this romp and venture into synthdom ..

Perhaps I was 16 and not 15 ..
.. since "Livin' on a prayer" was out in 1986 .. I'd have been 16 or 17 I guess when I wrote this- still retains that perhaps Desmond Child aspect (the Kiss/Bon Jovi common influence)... I can think of worst musical role-models. Thanks for the listen and comment Dani... oh and it's at the end of teh song as well, intro/outro manouvre :o)

Thanks Chris
I used Logic synths exclusively in this, familiarising myself a bit better with what is provided in Logic Pro 7: ES2, Sculpture, Clav, El.piano etc etc - mostly starting with presets that I tweaked to taste. I even automated a midi note bend (first time for me automating one!) ..wow..lol.

Some other more 'standard' compressions on the bass synth, stereo delays and of course the use of the "Touch" function/mode was experimented with herein, and some reversing of some audio segments for those "woosh"ing bits .. I think even R2D2 appeared via some minor use of the Ring Modulator plug-in for spice.

EHO...
Elecrtic Heavy Orchestra .. now where is my cellos?? ... lol .. I hear what you mean .. perhaps it's the blending of 7 or 8 synths at the same time that gives that effect .. would be a pretty big synth band if played live!

Do you dare
I caught the "Livin On A Prayer" at the beginning. Oddly enough I also heard some Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" in there. The reverse whooshes are cool. Nice track overall.

Ah..
I hear what you mean too now .. the chorus/refrain section I guess? It does use those 2 note chords and stops at a little "odd time" a bit like that riff in "Money for nothin'" .. 1985? Could very well have been thrown in the blend at the time .. spooky and interesting. Thanks Dave, glad it appealed.

My upgrade plan ..
once Apple stop with all the iPad junk and focus on an equally whisper quiet, reliable and affordable Mac mini quad (or more) core (retaining the dual monitor support they added to the model after mine) :o).. I'll get iLife X with the latest OS "Sabretooth Tiger", and start to upgrade me Logic set to match :o. It's a bit of a chore Logic Pro 7 but I'm getting to grips with it slowly but surely ... thanks for stopping in bud. Cheers.

Ha, like the references apt in an odd way, interesting this is void of guitars, but the electronica feel works. Yep lots of nice changes through out and the reverse sounds add to the suspense. Particularly like the image.

Thanks Steve

.. I might continuing adding to this: heavy POD Farmed guitars being the obvious thing to try + some real bass too of course. That use of "whoosh" joins in the arrangement was also something I wanted to dabble with, to see if I could get it to work. Oh, and the image just seemed to match my happy, blissful sense of adventure/experimenting herein .. and the "blue grumps" are (to me) indicative of the mass of artists somehow inexplicably restraining themselves to just one genre in this day and age... or perhaps ... it was just a silly pic :o)

SynthoPrancer
There's something about this (just like all of your other amazing music) that just GRABS me from the beginning and takes me prancing off into the neon-blinky streets of ProgTropolis (Stephenson's Diamond Age, possibly?) Wild and extremely catchy, love it.

if there is one thing I do try to do, it's to write music that grabs people from the start.. it's the kind of music that I like. Glad you picked up on the slight Prog rock quality, despite the major synth work. Thanks for the listen, always enjoy your comments.

You can remember
ideas you had when you were 15!?! This is fantastic Alan. I hear Gary Numan or The Cars as much as anyone here. You've got some brilliant tones on the keys in particular, but the whole thing just jumps out of the phones.
Keeps getting better and better as I'm listening. Terrific wobbly synth towards the end.
Love it!

liking the way the 6/8 synth clashes with the 4/4 drums. Plus how punchy and crisp the synths sound here. It sounds quite vocally-structured despite it having none, it would be cool to hear this with a vocal melody on top of it someday. Good work!
