Description:
Well, got a couple Industrial tracks in the fryer, but kinda' stuck on 'em. Then a synthpop song popped into my head (pun intended, heh). SO, this is my first upload using Logic Express. This is also the first track featuring my mic stand and pop screen, can ya tell? :P

NOTE: This is my first AAC audio file format upload. It doesn't seem to stream so you might need to wait a bit for it to start playing. I'll have to figure out why that's the case.

Lyrics:
I'm not the man I used to know,
He's gone away and let me go.
The further from myself I get,
I take a hold of regret.

For many years I tried to live,
But now I've lost my will to give.
And no one knows me as I am,
Holding out my cold hand.

Is it impossible to think,
the worst of me emerging.
From the depths inside my mind,
Torturous yet so fine.

I throw myself into the fray,
Can I only step away.
Hoping each and every day,
To find your beautiful gaze.

Do I surrender to this fight?
How do I retain the light?
It's dark inside, my vision lost,
You can make it all stop.

Forever, I will turn to you,
The magic from your gaze cuts through.
A clearing path into my soul,
You help me regain control.

Watch the rain cloud form,
The state I've seen before,
The puppet master pulls my strings,
perhaps he's always been with me.

And something builds inside,
A temper I can't hide away,
If all it comes down to is this,
I feel your gaze releasing it.

won't load for me &mdash 01/03/05 - 08:31:36 PM
hey pgreenstone, it seems take a little while, like it needs to load the whole
thing before you see the progress bar. I'm not sure why, my first time using
th m4a format. Sorry about that.

Solid &mdash 01/03/05 - 09:27:27 PM
Really good. Nice singing too. Reminds me of the more
thoughtful New Wave stuff from the 80's but with up-to-
date production value. I like the way you slide the rhym of
each verse's last word in. Perhaps bring the levels up a
little for the harmony vocals track. Not quite present
enough.

nice & slick. great work on the vocals & lyrics-umm.. the
girls are gonna love this one. of course, i just want that
mean-sounding first 10 secs to re-appear as a bridge
somewhere :D
great job-looks like you're getting a pretty good handle
on logic

Wonderful.. &mdash 01/04/05 - 03:47:45 AM
It is good to hear you sing a different genre.I like
the fact that you have kept the vocal effects to a
minimum. I also like the softness of your voice in the
verse and the harmonies are good. The melody and
arrangement is excellent.
Production wise, the difference is obvious from using
logic, much tighter and blended perfectly. Very danceable
track.

I am a fan of your industrial tracks, but I feel that this one
is quite outstanding... and yes of course I agree with
Underscore... this is one for the girls..

very 80´s &mdash 01/04/05 - 04:19:50 AM
Perfect vocals, nice beat, reminds me of a german band
called "Wolfsheim", this is actually one of the strongest
songs i have heard on macjams, good work!

Flock of Seagulls... &mdash 01/04/05 - 06:19:33 AM
Duran Duran, FIXX, great 80s pop sound. Very pro mix. I was about to comment that the vocal performance was too reserved when you punched it up a notch at the perfect time. Great voice, great writing, great production. Thanks. 9-10-9-9

Well, PackO... &mdash 01/04/05 - 07:13:44 AM
...you've shown us all the multi-faceted "POS". Well written
and performed, with production to boot! That voice cuts
through like a knife! You wrote and sang this well within
your range... and maintained a perfect balance, without
any signs of strain on your voice. The isolation of sounds
is absolute. Each one has its own unique space and
timbre, although I would've chosen a different drum scape
:P

Surgeon General Warning: AAC 192 m4a may be
hazerdous to your streaming!

Well, PackO... &mdash 01/04/05 - 11:23:35 PM
Thanks Alimar!

Okay, here's the lowdown. Apparently, the exporting of an AAC file from
Logic Express produced a "non-streaming" file... however, I uploaded
"Clockwork" as an AAC 192 file as well, but compressed the file in iTunes
instead of Logic Express. That one seems to stream just fine.

Cuhrazy!

Very good! &mdash 01/04/05 - 10:06:56 AM
Normally, vocals and electronics don't mix very well, to
me, but this works surprisingly well. Probably helps that
that bass stays on one note, which gives that static
trance-y feel.

You have a great voice. Sounds a bit like that guy from
Simple Minds.

(But that synth that comes in after the vocals, that sound
has been used waaaayyyyy too many times. Is that one of
the Virus loops? Please replace by a sound you've
programmed yourself.)

Very good! &mdash 01/04/05 - 03:37:38 PM
That's funny, That synth probably has been used to death, but I was attracted
to it's "familiar" sound. Almost like the song "takes you home". It's a slightly
modified analog mono synth as I was trying to replicate a synth I'd heard in a
VNV Nation song, although it's not a loop. I try to stay loop free. :)

Might do a revisit on that sound, though, now that mention it. :P

Great &mdash 01/04/05 - 11:38:45 AM
vocal performance and the production on this track is top
notch. I didn't really care for this style of music but again
all the effort you put into producing this track is very
evident.

I like the vocal texture when you sing in your higher
range. Very well done.

Innocent voice from Jekyll or Hyde? &mdash 01/05/05 - 11:43:00 AM
Love the low vocals. An new wrinkle to your great pop
high voice. Vocals are definitely the highlight of the track
for me, and the synth strings and cool bird sounding
synths. Something far away about this mix keeps me
from grooving completely to it, and the house drums drive
me crazy by the end (personal thing); but it all sounds
professional nonetheless. I like the building layers of
synth at the end. Lots of "Monster inside the man" lyrics
from you, Packo, and yet such a sweet, relaxed voice that
reaches inside with such innocence.

Human League &mdash 01/05/05 - 02:16:08 PM
Heaven 17 with an update. All you need is that "half and
half" haircut and you could be Phil Oakey. Excellent vox
and atmospheric synths. Perhaps a bit too "Ibiza", drums
are just a little TOO synthetic for me but that's just
personal.

Impressive

What a voice!

Did a pop screen do all that?! &mdash 01/06/05 - 04:18:42 PM
I think the synth (in tandem with the character of the snare) is just the right choice. The intention here seems to be to invoke a retro vibe and the synths alone make me remember coming home from school to watch MTV during the eighties.

The build is very well maintained over the entire course of the song. The careful balance of all the small elements really pays off as the song gradually crescendos toward the end.

Great piece! I could lavish praise on the vocals...but my bias is known!

wave pop songs I used to love as a jr high kid. cool
production and I like the synth. great job on the vocals. i
wish it had a bridge of some sort, but it's a nice song.

particularly the way you kicked it up just when I thought it
was starting to drag a little!

clean, professional and radio-ready &mdash 01/09/05 - 09:38:22 AM
Your production values are GREAT on this track!

Everything is clear as a bell, Excellently balanced.

Your orchestrations are very professional; full without
being cluttered, and you cover the sound spectrum from
low to high effectively.

The only time the mix sounds slightly muddy is towards
the end when you sing "Watch the rain cloud form", then it
clears up when you stop singing (LOL!)

Your vocals are very, very good though. I like the quality
of your voice on this track a LOT.

This is really the most polished and "radio-ready" track
that you've done so far, in my opinion.

Great job, packo!

Fav'd and downloaded.

A bit of a snore &mdash 01/13/05 - 01:02:44 PM
When I played this I imagined a chorus-line of leather
chaps clad Germans doing the Deiter while mouthing the
chorus.

1988 euro-disco.

Kind of boring, isn't it? I mean, that drum track, blaah, so
freeze dried, fake and samey-same. Except for that I can't
fault your production.

It just feels like a parody.

fabulous -- give us more! &mdash 01/15/05 - 07:17:04 PM
Unlike some of the others who've left comments, this is
right up my alley. Frankly, this is as good or better than a
lot of modern "professional" synthpop I've heard (e.g., The
Echoing Green and their ilk). It's just pleasantly plugging
along...and then the chorus kicks in. Excellent!

It isn't really 80's to me, although it certainly has strong
hints of Human League, Naked Eyes and Heaven 17. It
actually reminds me of "Nobody Knows (Part 1)" by Zoot
Woman (a fabulous song that can be found on the "This Is
Tech-Pop: 21st Century Electro and New Wave"
compilation, if anyone's interested).

Where can we get more of this stuff?

Speaking of the 80's... &mdash 02/17/05 - 08:21:44 PM
Haven't read any comparisions to Alphaville yet. While I
prefer your heavier music this was very refreshing. You've
heard this plenty already, but you really do have a
fantastic voice.

'S Nice how you demonstrated your vocal ability by
starting low and building up to the higher part of your
range. It really kept the song interesting.
