Moma's Coming-Get Ready

Description
Hello Macjammrs,

Here I go again with another attempt at the Downtempo genre.

I'm using around thirteen different patches in Sampletank with a couple of third party multi sampled synth patches. I decided to use a synth bass instead of playing a real bass (I'll probably end up replacing the bass track someday soon) I actually pulled my dusty trumpet out for this one and played a short track (lol- I'm sure you'll let me know what you think – good or bad) I played the Rhodes piano and a few synth parts in real time. Used a few loops here and there and played the guitar towards the end as well.

Thanks for your support and I hope you enjoy the listen,

My Moma's coming in town - I'd better get ready...(Excited & can't wait)

Marvelous Michael
Well, I'm not conversant with how this music is created, but that doesn't matter, its how it sounds and feels, and it felt great! I'm listening for the third time now and it just all feels right--thanks for this excellent production! Michael (Just how many Michaels do we have in his joint anyway?!)

Nifty
That's a pretty nice piece of downtempo. It grooves nicely and the sounds are fabulous.

If I'm allowed to comments: the backing synth has a slightly thick sound. I would cut some midrange, or maybe let it decay faster.
Two: in a number of places the instruments are a bit very synchronized. The piano, pad, bass, vocal, whatever, all start a new chord precisely in sync, and then hold it for the same 16 beats. I like passages such as at 4:40 where a lead synth continues over the chord changes. This track indeed improves as it goes on: the second half is far stronger than the first.

Hey - Thanks Vic

I respect and appreciate your listen and detailed comments.

I realize it will not work and be perfect for everyone. I am very meticulous with what I do in every element as I record and I'm sorry but I can't agree with you on the synth issue - However I will agree with the "lead synth continues over the chord changes" part. I am always trying to improve and your suggestions help me.

Thank you again for such a detailed listen and response,

Nice groove!
The horn sounds great! I love the delays you've got there. I'd have liked to hear some more throughout. Good stuff, anyway.

Nice groove!
Thanks Dave, I thought about continuing with the trumpet however it was a challenge just to play what I did because I haven't played that thing for many years.(over 20) I promise to practice and lay more tracks in future songs.

Appreciate the listen & comment,

That real trumper

..fits like a glove in this lovely piece Michael. From 02:05 I got that lovely "Supertramp" feel from the high "oos" and the Rhodes. Soothing, relaxing and it washes over me like a wave- perfect prep. for visiting relatives. Mix is excellent as I'd expect. One of our great synth masters at MJs imo.

That real trumpet
Thanks Alan, Yes I'm excited about my mother coming to visit. We live a thousand miles apart and if we're lucky we see each other once a year. This is truly a blessing for me. This song is kind of laid back and that's how I want her to feel - (relaxed). Synth master at Mjs...well...There are a few great synth masters here and I do appreciate the wonderful comment.

Thanks again Al,

Momma's Coming, I'm Ready
Personally I like the synth bass. The tone of the bass just fits. I love the trumpet. Pretty well played and wonderfully recorded. I like the delay on it. Really nice guitar playing. I like both your lead work and the power chords. Both the guitar and trumpet add an organic piece to this excellent track.

intriguing... love the trumpet
I also liked the unconventional and slow sweeping intro that led into the groove. The distorted "edge" to the bass near the beginning and in the middle almost sounded like clipping that was driving a rip in my headphones in the left ear... not a great sound. But the rest of this was awesome, and I loved the live trumpet bit.

Thanks Eduard, The synth bass I choose has a distorted synth sound. I also used a synth fretless and sub bass which are clean. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I do appreciate your listen and comment,

Nice vibes
The tempo is chillin' cool, love the trumpet/synth sound. Of course, I don't understand the title "Mommas coming" in conjunction with the music, but, perhaps that's your intention, to open up minds and let them float on their own, which is totally fine with me! Enjoyed! Very simple, and straight forward! Great key-work (unless you used looped throughout)? Thank you Sir!

Nice vibes
Thanks Mikki, okay, My mother is coming to visit (for my daughters wedding) and I was working on this song and needed a title - Now I'm thinking what better than "Mommas Coming"? I want my mother to feel relaxed (as with this relaxed easy listening downtempo song)and enjoy her visit with all her grandchildren so I felt this just fit and it is what I am currently working on - There you have it...Simple - maybe for some - took me years and years to come up with such simple stuff. Appreciate the listen and comment,

Hope that helps.

Thanks ConnieO, I used loops and multi sampled patches on this and actually did a little synth tweaking for some sounds. Played a few things in real time.(trumpet, guitar, couple of synth passages and then some...) It was fun - can't wait to make another...... Thanks for the listen and comment,

this is excellent
Lots of layers and diversity, making this track a very interesting and enjoyable listen. I love it when the trumpet comes in. The structure is solid, and somehow it sounds like an exquisite soundtrack to a road movie. Don't know why exactly. A sweet piece of work, Michael.

Nice piece
I like where this is going but I think a stronger driving baseline benefit greatly. There are some nice musical phrasings here but I felt the song was flowing in a journey rather than making a statement with a clear melody tension and resolution.

Mommas Coming
This has all the elements of a really cool chill tune, but I particularly like what could be described as the chorus, and how you built upon the concept. You use a lot of very cool synth voices that I wish I had. Perhaps I really should check out that sampltank! Very fun to listen to Michael - thanks!!

Congratulations on your daughter's wedding!
Best wishes,
Sig

Mommas Coming
Thanks Siggy, I do appreciate your comments and listen and continued support. I use Sampletank however I also use several sample libraries as well. I like "Multisampled" samples because they are instruments to play. I can pretty much get any instrument in multisample form and use it like the original instrument. That's the great thing about multisampling. The musicians who record the samples (from where I get them) do a fantastic job. (IK Multimedia is one place - there are several) I can almost replace all my hardware gear because of this. (not that I would) I admit Sampletank is pretty awesome however it isn't perfect. They need an easier way to assign a controller to a value...which I'm still working on. There are other sampler players out there that make this much easier. Anyway.....I'm going on about nothing that has to do with this song - and I suppose I can....

Thanks again my Southern California friend,

You've got a knack for this type of music dude. I didn't think that the synth lead at 4:40 was bad. It was the pause between the lead guitar and the synth lead that stuck out. Very well done bro. I'd love to watch you put something like this together from scratch.
