Description
So I’m sitting around Sunday night strumming a guitar searching for an idea. I was becoming worried nothing would come. I placed a drum loop in a track and set it to loop continuously. Then I started to play with my amp modeling software hoping a sound would spark an idea. After finding a sound I kind of liked I detuned the bottom string of the guitar. The next thing I knew I had a riff. Now all rock guitar players know, once you have a riff, you have a song. After that the instrumental arrangement came together quickly. By Monday evening I sent a mix to Gaylen and asked him if he would contribute lyrics and vocals. This afternoon he sent back the mix we’ve posted here. He's an amazing talent. Hope you like it.

Lyrics
I spend my days spitting on the waves
The way a real man makes a wage
In some ways I hunger for a change
But I can never leave the water where I was raised
We've all got a family to feed
And it’s my honor to fill that need
But the mouth of corporate greed
It only wants me to bleed
What’s yours is yours
And what's mine is yours of course
Is yours to crush and grind
Your lucky I do right
Because where you sleep at night
Can’t be too hard to find

And so I pray for things to be the same
The way they were before you came
No I won’t praise or thank you for the save
Or for the money that you gave
You can’t keep a good man down
But there’s less good men going around
You and I are not the same
Don’t your daughters and sons look at you with shame?
What’s yours is yours
And what's mine is yours of course
Is yours to crush and grind
Your lucky I do right
Because where you sleep at night
Can’t be too hard to find

How do you live with yourself?
Money can’t buy you out of hell
Black crude suck get it suck get it suck
Your heart stuck up in the mucky muck
I know you don’t really give a fuck
Because if you did you’d give it up
What’s yours is yours
And what's mine is yours of course
Is yours to crush and grind
Your lucky I do right
Because where you sleep at night
Can’t be too hard to find

On behalf of both of us, thank you! But don't quit! Did you read the description? I was getting worried I'd never get another good idea when the main riff of this one rolled off the guitar. I almost quit!

Cool riffage, like the guitar lines and tone.
This feels like a diss on BP oil execs. I like this line "Because where you sleep at night
Can’t be too hard to find". Vocs are cool, lots of passion

Yeah, that may be my favorite line too. I like the way Gaylen softens that line by singing "Your lucky I do right," just before it. His lyrics amaze me! Thanks for stopping by to listen and comment.

great production, my friend.

Thank You Sir!
It amazes me how relatively easy technology makes this. Between GarageBand, Macs, Line6, and MacJams, collaborations like this can happen in less than 48 hrs, over the Internet. Way too much fun.

We're both glad you liked it and thank you for stopping by to listen and comment.

And the train kept a rollin', all night long
LOVE that intro crunch guitar riff, and the whole thing just rolls along, with Gaylen's great singing on it. I do have to admit that it sounded like Gaylen sometimes sang notes that were in the major key, but the underlying guitar was in minor, strange harmonies. But the "Bloody Precious" (B.P.) lyrics were disturbingly immediate, and Gaylen, as always, delivers with raw panache. Andrew, this soundbed just growls with power, soooo excellent... reminds me a bit of one of my favorite Aerosmith songs :-) Overall music mix seemed perfect to me, no wild snares here, and I shall not even mention the fade-out because the song is too cool to care.

Drakonis

That's One of My Favorites Too!
In fact everything on "Get You Wings" takes me back to being 15 and wanting to rock that hard. So a "Train Kept a Rollin'" comparison is a very gratifying thing.

As for the harmonies, that just means someone's playing and/or singing a #9 over a major triad! That sounds like blues to me! Although most of the chord voicings I play here don't have 3rds. The only exceptions are the Cadd9 and Bbmaj7 and the end of each verse.

As always thanks for listening closely and leaving constructive and thoughtful comments.

9ths, diminished 7ths, duh
So many things to learn, thank you for pointing that out, I still am groping around with simple major/minor triads, and barely touch 7ths, much less 9ths (augmented?) His singing made them really stand out, and it wasn't "bad"... but just very noticeable. Cool Andrew, always the teacher! I appreciate it!

And
regardless of the theoretical definitions of intervals and chord structures, whether or not a particular note or grouping of notes sounds dissonant or not is up to the listener. If it sounds at all dissonant to you than it is.

Getting a Feel For It
First (and longest lasting) rock influence for me is the Beatles. But somewhere in my teens I left them for a period and fell hard for 70's hard rock (Zep, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Bad Co, Queen). College years were all about jazz. Later I discovered blues, soul, and R&B. But GB and MJ have led me back to that teen period. I just never got to rock this hard back then. Having access to so many tools and amazing talents like Gaylen are allowing me to indulge in a genre that's real close to my youthful heart. Having a Marshall stack in a laptop is a very cool thing.

On behalf of both of us, thank you for taking the time to listen and comment.

This is how
Great songs see the light ... This is a great song Andrew ! In addition to your riff, I love the guitar accompaniment (arpeggios I hear on my right earphone). Your solo rocks !!!

Gaylen's voice, I'm a fan !!! Terrific in this song too.

alackbass said 2712 days ago (June 16th, 2010)
Thank You
Those arpeggios you're hearing, I assume in the verses, are an acoustic on the left and a clean electric loaded with effects on the right. I'm lightning strumming down and then hitting the highest note in the chord with a slightly stronger upstroke. Pretty simple stuff. And I'm a fan of Gaylen's voice too. Vacation day today....................need to come up with another track for him. Thanks for stopping by to listen and comment. We appreciate it.

Seriously well done.

Good example of the genre
Its been a while since Ive heard southern rock and I think you guys really have the genre down. Guitars are spot on and vocals fit perfectly. The best parts are IMO on the chorus when the vocals are most powerful.

alackbass said 2711 days ago (June 16th, 2010)
Thank You
I never really thought of this one as southern rock, certainly not in classic sense like The Allman Brothers Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd. But I think the genre has progressed since my day and there are new bands representing who borrow from British metal and hard rock as well. Certainly there were bands in the 90's like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains who were clearly influenced by the southern rockers and the British rockers. Having the acoustic and clean electric carry the verse does give it a small southern rock flavor. And most of all there's just a slight twang in Gaylen's vocal. So upon further review I get exactly what you mean. And I too like the chorus. Gaylen really captures that sense of range many are feeling on the gulf coast.

You two have a great e-chemistry--Gaylen's high Plant-esque vox and that guitar tone go together like, well, oil and natural gas...

this growing disaster will inspire several angry pieces. Several members have already captured the sadness and suffering. But it feels good to be in on the rage. And to do it from the first person perspective of a fisherman was brilliant and ALL Gaylen. Oh, and I think I can speak for both of us when I say, love those Zep comparisons. MJ Band Wagon...
Great arrangement and lyrics.... captures the essence. And good to get a little enraged, sparks creativity.

And now is the time for all good men and women come to the aid of their country...and get on the MJ Band Wagon...

alackbass said 2711 days ago (June 16th, 2010)
Agree
But how do we come to the aid of out country in this crisis? So far all I did was play my guitar really loud. And of course it was Gaylen who captured the essence. Thanks for stopping by to listen and comment.

Several of my posts have been like you described. They can take weeks or even months before I get onto an approach that seems to work. This was one of those rare times (at least for me) when the initial idea got a ball rolling and kept rolling until we posted the final product. The next challenge will be allowing future songs to take that long road to completion and not wonder why they don't come together as easily as this one did. From the very start
this was going to be a good listen - great backing sounds - enough variation to maintain interest. Nice bass tone (or was that the detuned 6th string?). Typically interesting vocal from Gaylen - you have this genre well and truly mastered. Nice Acca Dacca feel from about 3:20.
Like this a lot - all good.

Had to look up Acca Dacca
Now after doing so I know it was a compliment. I'm sure the bass (which was detunes a whole step) is enhanced by the detuned Les Paul. So what you're referring to is no doubt a combination of the two. Thank you from both of us for stopping by to listen and comment.

I don't consider myself much of a guitar player, so your kind comments are appreciated very much. And yes, Gaylen's vocal is awesome.

Talk about short turnaround - you'd be
in triple time by the time of the release. Excellent set up for Gaylen's killer vocals. What a great team you guys make. Your guitar sounds awesome and the rest of the mix is spot on. A little GnR is a cool thing.

Man...
... this has a great classic rock feel to it. Whitesnake came to mind. I dig what you achieved here.

At first I found the vocal harmonies a bit off tune but the song itself held them together PERFECTLY and they actually sound amazing. Fantastic songwriting, performance, and production. My only nit is the fade out; you could start it a bit earlier because on my first listen, it felt like an abrupt ending. A very minor thing, though.

Yet another hit...

what;s yours
hang on...i thought i'd given this the thumbs up already....but maybe it was another collab with gaylen. anyway...again...another sensation. there's something to remind me here of "Survive" by Seal. great mix...crystal clear. gaylen i hope you did this in as few takes as possible because you need to save your vocal chords for future virtuoso performances. sublime.

I dont know
what a riff is really but I sure am glad it made this tune. I do know that when you add Gaylen to anything it becomes unique, amazing and second to none so good job on both the riff and sending to Gaylen... made this tune go to my ipod

A Quick Definition
A riff is a short, repeating figure, which in rock music is most often played on a guitar. Probably the most famous riff would be Keith Richards' gem that starts Satisfaction. Another easily recognized riff would be the intro to Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. My riff is not nearly as memorable as those two, but apparently it worked okay. And I agree, Gaylen made it unique. We are honored to be on your Ipod.

THE BIG WAVES
I think life's finest moments are the "right riffs at the right time" (tears and laughter and love).

dopeness. Nice way to start it off strong. Great tones from those guitars, very bright. Gaylen you sound real good here. I swear this sounds like something weiland would have done. This is like STP meets alice in chains meets soundgarden. Very cool, one of my recent favorites for sure, great work!

Yours is Yours
Yeah man, I like it all. "What’s yours is yours
And what's mine is yours of course". The corporate plunderers should be tied up with headphones on their heads playing this song at 200 decibals until oil seeps from their ears. This should get hooked up with some college music sites - it would go over big on campuses.

Yeah, I'm finding a few approaches that work for me. Sometimes it's a few chord changes. Other times it's a drum loop. And on rare occasions it's an idea for a lyric. Whatever the approach, I find the biggest problem is just getting started. Thanks for listening and commenting.

whats yours...
This is such a fantastic song. How did I not comment before now! Oh yeah i wasnt a mjer yet! I remember when you sent this to him. He literally heardvthe music and an hour later was laying down a scratch vocal. He just knew what you wanted. This song should have been playing on the radio an anthem for all the gulf coasters. Love, love, love this tune!
alackbass said 2403 days ago (April 21st, 2011)
Thanks Carrie
And I remember my reaction when Gaylen sent the finished mix. I was blown away not only by what he had written and sang. This was the first time I wrote a track and sent it out to an Mj member for lyrics and vocals. It blew my mind to learn two guys, on separate ends of the country, who had never met could write together simply by emailing mp3 files back and forth. This collaboration with Gaylen was life changing for me!
