Drums & Brass

Description
Drums & Brass is the middle part of a trio of works built around very strong percussive backbones. My previous piece, All Funked Up, is actually the third part and I'll be posting the first part next week.

This piece is made up of three sections: the first and third are comprised of 2 loops for left hand piano and 5 loops of right hand. In the second section the left hand loops are played by an Orchestral Bass Organ and the right hand loops are played by an Orchestral Brass Ensemble. Two Orchestral Kit loops play throughout. A couple of the loops were modified slightly.

For those of you disappointed that I've posted another loop-based work I can only say: hang in there. I wanted to get these three pieces out of the way and then get back to some of my MIDI work (I have a couple).

I originally had a brighter image of fireworks for the artwork but decided that this one is more in keeping with the tune: it is, I think, darker, more masculine (do ya think?), and more appropriate. It happens to be of the Washington Monument but nothing political is meant (besides what's already been mentioned).

Hmm,
Plenty of symbols, er cymbals. It is dark but dramatic, also. Neat. :)

Nice arrangement Richard
Familiar in some ways, but also very different. I recognize some of the loops, but the way you put it together is outstanding. Can't wait to hear the rest of this one.

Nice arrangement...
I was sincerely worried that the loops might be too familiar so I'm especially happy with your comment, Ed. Thanks again, my friend. I Think you might like the next one, too. Cheers.

Drums & Brass
I only know it's loops when honest artists like yourself tell me. When is it a real instrument, software instrument, or loop? I never know anymore. And then you get into whether or not the loops were edited by the artist. It all comes down to whether or not the music sounds good. This sounds good.

Drums & Brass
Andrew, I figure there's nothing to be gained by not being honest: there are too many real musicians here, yourself included, who would know in an instant. Besides, there's as much educational value in listening as there is entertainment: I'd much rather mess with your mind musically (if I could ;-) than by a simple lie. I'm glad this one sounds good to you.

No prob
I have no problem with anyone who uses loops to compose a piece, it part of the process for some of us..I must say tho that I found the percussion distracting, and not really fitting for the piece just my thoughts, those piano segments are great tho and I like the over all feel of the piece, well composed me thinks..

No prob
Thanks, Dave, for the thumbs up on the loop thing and for the thumbs down on the percussion ;-) I'm sorry you found it distracting, but it was almost the point. I have an earlier piece called The Ice Maiden's Gavotte which sets a delicate (sort of) melody against decidedly masculine percussion, but you probably wouldn't like it either ;-)
No prob: I still like your music -- a lot. Cheers.

I'm not much...
... of a loops-fan or have had any experience with loops, so none sounds familiar to me. But, I can distinguish between a smart use of loops and a bad arrangement of loops. You've achieved an incredible tune with those loops and there's a lot of interesting elements in this piece. I really like it! :)

SURREAL!
Ohhh, I feel loopy after this. You successfully combined hard and soft elements to make something highly surreal and compelling. Ah, ideal soundtrack material. Keep using your intuition! It's great stuff.
