Description
From my album "Signs Of Life", available at BandCamp.:

A photograph is worth a thousand words, but I chose to use just a few words to describe some photos that haunt me (mostly in a good way) from my younger days, and how important to me they have become.

Photos have always been a big part of my life - I used to chronicle lots of things with photos, and indeed, still do.

This song took very little time to write, and was developed from some chords I wrote down in Switzerland in 2009. It has taken the best part of 4 months to complete though - the mix was a bugger!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one.

Neil Porter - guitars, bass, keys, drums, vocals and production.

I still see you sitting there
On that rocky beach near Agadir
Baking in the morning sun
Got your message loud
Got your best smile on
I was your suburban boy
You always were the girl of my dreams

I turn the page you’re looking fine
Dressed up like you’re off to school
“April Sun In Cuba”’s in the air
Kids must have thought you were so damn cool
I was your suburban boy
You always were the girl of my dreams

I saw it in a photograph of you
I guess somehow that kind of makes it true
Looking through my photographs
I still can’t believe it turned out me and you

Found the page I was looking for
Summer dress against the sun
Summer nights and summer sighs
I knew you’d be my only one
I was your suburban boy
You always were the girl of my dreams

Throw some pictures on the wall
There’s you and me and whatsisname
This could have been a different story
We could have played a different game
But I was your suburban boy
You always were the girl of my dreams

I saw it in a photograph of you
I guess somehow that kind of makes it true
Looking through my photographs
I still can’t believe it turned out me and you

I still see you on that beach
I see you’re still looking fine
You seemed so far out of reach
I’m so glad that you are mine
But I was your suburban boy
You always were the girl of my dreams

I saw it in a photograph of you
I guess somehow that kind of makes it true
Looking through my photographs
I still can’t believe it turned out me and you

Love this tune
The work you have put in shines in every note. I like the subtle reggae flavours, wich capture the holiday, youthful mood so well. The words tell such a simple but gentle story. The break is just right and the ending almost beatlesque. Thanks for sharing.
Martin.

When I was young, I was the "chronicler" in our group of friends, and have a huge collection of photos in shoeboxes to prove it. Some of the ones of my wife Jan (that's her in the pic, photographed at Agadir in Morocco) bring back special memories. I could probably write a dozen songs based around small collections of pics - maybe I will ;)
Thanks for visiting and having a listen.

Coop!
Thanks for the listen and comment. The live thing is expanding a bit at the moment, which is why I'm here less. We finally have a bassist who can really play (I've known him 30 years), and good gigs are starting to trickle in. It's all good, and great experience too.
Glad you can hear the changes.
Best from the Sapphire Coast of NSW my friend.

Great song, arrangement, and production! Nice hook in the electric guitar line. I also really like the rhythm guitar. Great sound. Nice brush drum groove and punchy bass sound. I've never heard a song the organ doesn't improve. Nice organ solo. Equally nice guitar solo. Tastefully played extension of the vocal melody.

Thanks for dropping by Andrew
and for the kind words. I got into a bit of a thing, having Alf Solti (alfalpha) play an organ solo then Thor Oliversen (thoddi) play a guitar solo - even though Alf and Thor weren't around for this, I decided not to break with tradition :)
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Hey Neil
Sounds like Ringo wrote this for Paul. Just kidding.

Very clean production firstly. The lyrics are sensational. Very good delivery as usual.

Enjoyed.
Hope your team does well in its next match in the World Cup.

Yes .. sorry about that comment Dave, it was meat as a compliment though ;)
World Cup - if we can find a ref that's not determined to card off our star players we might do OK. What is it with World Cup refs anyway??
Thanks for the listen - glad you enjoyed it.

Hell of a song, Neil
Wonderful lyrics, well delivered with feeling and honesty. Musically interesting and your production deserves Kudos. Love the texture of the lead and rhythm guitars, and the Bass is right there, without being in your face.
Love this song Neil, it's a great love song and dedication.

Thanks for having a listen and leaving such a positive comment. I still enjoy solo stuff, although some of the recent collabs have been great fun. Most of all though, I'm enjoying playing live with PBGB - quite a few new songs being rehearsed at the moment. Hopefully they'll get to MJ - our drummer and the other guitarist are terrific writers.
Cheers,
N

I like the contrast between the somewhat muddy bass and the trebly guitar. I also like the use of the photograph which brings the listener back in time. It is also an easily relatable situation. A well-written song, excellent performances and production

Your
recording skill is incredible but the main thing that hits me in your music is FEELING.The technical stuff I don't know much about, but I do know that you have the rare ability to express deep emotion in your music. Some nice twists in the chord progression- great song!

a thousand words...

in the picture and your song for sure! Neil, this is a keeper. Lovely lyrics.

Sometimes the best songs are the ones that are simple and come together in short order. Melodically it is very accessible. And you sing it so well. Great ending... This reaches many good levels, commercially and artistically. Kudos to you "down there."

Throw some pictures on the wall
I love photographs, they bring back such fond memories. Interesting how in this age of digital photography it seems to be harder to get them into print (a "round to it" issue).

Here you've taken a snapshot of a memory or two and put them into a digital media that is shared very nicely. Great love song, Neil.

Thanks for having a listen - good to hear from you. We're having a pretty quiet year at home this year, and apart from a dose of Ross Rive Fever (me) have been in good health. Hopefully will be back en Europe in 2011 - still trying to arrange a house-swap. How are your retirement plans going? Any closer? Best wishes to you, Brigitte and the family.

Bugger or not...
This is a great mix, to my ears...

And I'm a total pushover for love songs for loves that have lasted...

I can't believe how much breadth, depth and life you bring to your recent recordings... They have punch and they really breathe... I don't care if it's a preset button on Ozone, it sounds great... Your individual instrumental performances are nicely tight and crisp without sounding stilted...

Another good one, Neil...

Got me again
I don't know that I need to keep repeating what's been said about this song by others and what I've said about your other songs. Such a high level of songwriting combined with true talent at every musical position (including the elusive session engineer spot).

The interesting bit I'd like to note is a lyrical theme that I think underpins quite a few of your songs and speaks straight to the nostalgia guy in me. From "What If"'s mention of Lyell's line to the arc of your life touching ever-so-briefly with the "Thin Man" and his dreams and now to your courtship of Jan (and the near-miss with "whatsisname"), a lot of your poetry has to do with how precious the little interactions are in life ... how tiny moves one way or the other can have tremendous impacts on the course of a life. This theme really resonates with me. Pair that with the photograph (and of course the song) and I can't help but get a bit emotional as I listen.

Seeing as how a common goal for a songwriter is to move a listener in some way, let me chime in with a hearty "mission accomplished".
