Love Like a River

Description
Haven't posted in a while. Thought I'd put something up to keep some skin in the game.

Have had this track for a while. Recorded vocals and nylon string guitar during solo CD sessions with Producer David Henning. I added keys and second guitar at home in GB. Still not happy with arrangement. Could hear this with strings, maybe. Dunno.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It works well played live in coffeehouses. On the other hand, my wife thinks the lyrics are a little lame. But she's always a tough crowd.

Lyrics
Love Like a River

Love like a river keeps twistin’and turnin,
The current always pulling us down
First we’re shooting the rapids, then dodging the boulders,
Always drifiting or running aground

So we cling to the channel, one eye on the weather
The other on higher ground
While all around us the water is risin’
and the rain keeps pourin’ down

When the morning fogs creeps
and you can’t find the buoys,
you’re pushed by the undertow.
Then the sun hits the bottoms,
And the cottonwood’s blowin’
there’s nothin’ like watchin’ her flow

Love like a river
Love like a river
Love like a river..and the rain keeps pourin’ down

Keep a hand on the tiller but light as a feather,
Careful you don’t over steer
For she’s gonna take you where ever she wants
Blow the whistle, so the way is clear.

Love like a river flows into the ocean
A delta that is fertile and wide
Like a new born baby with water annointed,
Our sins washed away with the tide

Well, there’s snakes in the weeds
And the barges can kill you
Better mind the downbound tow.
But in the cool of an evening
There’s an egret that’s preening
Nothin’ like watchin’ her flow

Chorus

River
Nice as always. I prefer the organ sound to the pad. I always like simple stuff like this.

My wife's a tough crowd too. She thinks of my stuff more as noise than music. Oh well.

Tell your wife I can't hear one thing in this I would describe as lame. Great song. Very nice sparse arrangement. I love the swirling organ and the 2nd guitar brightens the whole thing.

Barges can kill you?
Learn something new every day. Lyrics are poetic and descriptive of the idea you meant to convey. Not as lame as "Life is like a box of chocolates."
Very pretty..the playing and the singing. Thank you. :)

Pretty song John,
and very well performed. I think I can hear a bass line in this that is missing now. It would bring up the bottom end of the song and fill out the dynamic range a little better giving the song more impact. I think a stand up acoustic bass might work best

Another thing that hit me while listening for the second time, was that it would benefit from a slow Country fiddle. I think strings would be over the top for it. It has a sweet Country-Folk feel to it and a string section would be too much.

Love what you've got, John. I see lots of possibilities for this as you flesh out the song. Definitely use the K.I.S.S. principle here, don't want to over compensate.

I love it, it's a great song with some great lyrics.

Can you hear me applauding from Minneapolis?
Always great to hear your work John. I think you underestimate this one...the lyrics work beautifully (after all this is called "Love like River!"). You have one of the best voices around and the vocal interpretation of your song is peerless (who was singing with you? She's good too!). One of the loveliest and warmest songs to hit MJ in quite a while--thanks again for sharing it. Michael

lovely tune
this is some great work, John. The nylon sounds fantastic and you've added the other elements tastefully. I'd like to hear this with just your voice and guitar. that said, there are some fine vocal harmonies here.

Very nicely done John
Like Ed, I can hear an acoustic bass. For me, the extra guitar that comes in with the pad is too obviously an add-on. The part is beautifully played, but it just sounds out of place to me - especially when it stops and there's a big acoustic hole. You don't mention who the lady is singing with you - she does a terrific job.
I really like this John, but it does need some work still.
Cheers,
Neil

Great intro picking. Good hook and the lyric is tightly focused on developing it. I enjoyed the vocs/harmonies. I agree with Ed on the strings

Nice--all around
John:

Really sweet. I believe this is a great example of keeping it simple. I wouldn't clutter it up with any other instrumentation. So often songwriters add instruments into an arrangement and it loses it's delicate beauty. This is a wonderful song =-)

worth waiting for...
Nice and warm song. Loving how you start this thing... rain keeps falling down. Really sweet vocal harmony from your wife, perfect. Gosh, these lyrics are just so fresh:

"Keep a hand on the tiller but light as a feather,
Careful you don’t over steer"

Being a former sailor I have to think you had your hand on a tiller or two.

Nothing but kudos to the both of you. Well written, sung, and recorded!

Mine is harsh, but honest. Sometimes too harsh. I think yours is being a bit harsh. I do love an extended metaphor. Or simile, I guess. If you say "like" in the first line, can we not call it an extended metaphor? Hmm.

Anyway, the lyrics are very nice and the melody is very sweet and honest. I'm not too sure about the organ, but I don't know why. So nevermind. Great track!

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
