Description

Another Long day was one of the first things I posted here on MJ. It was originally very sparse and can still be heard in it's original form on my profile. After hearing some of the great collaborations and stellar musicians here I asked Andy (Awigze) to throw some sax down for me....well, he did. He sent back the track and I mixed it down with the original. I also altered the feel a bit by recreating the drum track. Andy did a phenomenal job as always and I am happy with the way he put a "new shine" on one of my favorites. Again, the bass and harmonics are played on my 62' Reissue Jazz Bass and the key sounds are from my X3.

Hey man! I really like this mix... When you said you were going to put it all back together I had no idea what you were going to do with, even extending some notes (I think) You even caught my flubs. dig the echo at the end of the phrases. This song when I first heard it was great and it was like all I had to do was squeeze the sax a little. Sounded like we were going to wander off into another one of your great songs at the end... maybe we should do this some more... [nudge nudge]

I had fun working with your track, I did extend a few notes and used echo and volume panning to enhance some lower, subtle volume "gems" that weren't out front originally. The melody line was just what I had envisioned and it has been in my head for three days! I would love to work with you again soon, thanks for making my first collab a good one.

I was at work when I fanned this. But because I remembered the original version you posted, I knew this new version with Andy would be great as well. Now I'm ready to listen all the way through.

Great use of harmonics as an accompaniment. Too many bassists use harmonics only to play solo pieces that more often than not come off as rip-offs of Portrait of Tracy. But here the harmonics take on the role of a sparsely played electric piano. The tone and phrasing of the bass line is killer. And Andy makes it a tune. Dig the funk at the end.

I checked this out earlier at work but just listened on my new headphones, Andy really nailed it! great mix Chris, you really did a nice job here, I said this was a nice collab earlier, but this is more than that, it's really very good, one of the best instrumentals I've heard here!
I'm guessing the abrupt ending was a snafu?

thanks for the compliment. means a lot coming from you sir. The time comes from having excellent nearly completed files to work with, like this one. The ideas are so well conceived that it comes very easily to noodle out a part. Then the burden goes to the producer, in this case, Chris who decides what sticks and what doesn't. I generally record when I am at the house by myself. I know this is difficult for many with kids. My kids are grown and there are times when I will take a day off when my wife is at work and I'll work on 3 or 4 and spend all day on it. I just love doing it.

another long day
shades of grover washington around here....i like a bit of grover washington from time to time. your bass lines are always just the right amount of busy.....cool. loved those woodblocks at the start out on one side...and those little squeaks of sound you thrown in from time to time under andy's sax. really cool retro tune. love the transition at 3.38...oh yeah....we're into some cool and funky r&b....nooooo you faded out too quickly....let it cook a while....then out slowly.
