Description
just one of those things

there are a few interesting things i did on this.
there are two bass tracks. one is a basic bass tone while the other is quite effected. they trade off in parts during the verses.
i also added a droning sitar synth, to get it ti sound right i had to transpose the guitar lines in the riff that plays in the verse to keyboard .
the lead guitar part is two guitars. one plays a harmony line through part of it and doubles on part as well (mostly because my brain couldn't process the notes fast enough) at the end there is a 3 part harmony guitar riff playing in the background.

Lyrics
Surprise, Surprise

my ordinary day
everything is going just okay
my ordinary day
everything i do
everything in place
everything is put away

surprise, surprise
we left you wondering why
surprise, surprise
we knocked you out of the sky
and you didn't see this one coming from behind

everything is changed
now i have to plan my day
everything is changed
i didn't see the writing on the wall
i could of gone without the calls

surprise, surprise
we left you wondering why
surprise, surprise
we knocked you out of the sky
and you didn't see this one coming from behind

nothings forever
nothing is all together
nothings forever

i'm in gear
set my brain to overdrive
i'm in gear
take motivation 101
set my phasers on stun

surprise, surprise
we left you wondering why
surprise, surprise
we knocked you out of the sky (2x's)

surprise, surprise
you left me wondering why
surprise, surprise
you knocked me out of the sky

originally i had more words in the lyrics and was singing in a different tone, but it seemed to me it wasn't quite right so i simplified and came a it a bit different. the bass is two basses one effected with a chorus then i edited them for some variety.

there's no escaping from myself, not that i was trying to. originally i was just looking for a droning synth pad, it took quite a while before i tried the sitar for this, it seemed to do what i was searching for. i altered the levels on it a lot so it wouldn't become to repetitive

Sounds like you did some really nuanced, intricate things to get the sound just right in this song, and it was well worth it. It sounds great. I was especially interested in the fact that you used two bass tracks, because I've messed around with doing that too. I don't know why, but this sort of reminds me of Jethro Tull. Cool song!

Ed Hannifin said 2692 days ago (July 10th, 2010)
I always wondered...
...if it would be neat or interesting to do something with two bass parts...

This is really sonically interesting.... You mention the sitar and the doubling of guitar parts... I'm also enjoying the vocal treatment on this one... I think your voice is sounding particularly airy and light while still cutting through the mix the way a lead vocal ought to do....

I continue to compare recent VicWork to old and ancient VicWork in my mind, and I think one of the great improvements over the years has been that the the sonic canvas in the mix has gone from being two dimensional and wide but flat to being three dimensional, having a natural depth....

i had a basic bass set up in place & reccorded. one evening i started thinking what would some of the other logic channel strip bass settings would sound like. i like one of the effected ones that i went for it. then re-edited the first one.

i think i'm finally getting a more refined handle on mixing with less guitar tracks. i had read many times that a lot of artist would track a ton of tracks, i learned it's not necessary. once in a while i go back and re-edit/mix an older tune. only a couple that i have bothered to re-post.

thanks again Ed.
