Description
A mashup of blues loops and other sounds. This was made to accompany a documentary I made with some friends on a cultural drop-in centre in Prince George, BC. The pine beetle epidemic was in full swing here -- an infestation of one of our dominant tree species, the lodgepole pine. Also in full swing is an HIV/Aids epidemic, especially affecting Aboriginal communities in the North. The drop-in centre, The Fire Pit, confronts this latter epidemic with support, education, post-colonial cultural connections, food, and links to health care services. We picked Pine Beetle as the name of the song to reflect the proliferation of resemblances that exist between land and people.

This song has a wonderful gritty, bluesy feel--and the inspiration for it is a great read. I live in Colorado, and the pine beetle is eating up many forests here, too. In law school, my passion was (and still is) indigenous peoples' law, so I am very keenly interested in all issues touching indigenous/aboriginal communities. I believe I will Google The Fire Pit later today--I'm so glad I read this. Great use of the loops!
