Oasis In Your Palm (v1)

Description
Please note the most recent remix of this track: Oasis On The Rocks.

This is the first in a series of instrumentals I've been working on. My New Years resolution was to do nothing original this year, a resolution I kept until I started working on my concerto (Once & Future Concerto, mov 1). Actually, the first song I did this year was for jazz singer Angela Hope (Seafood Gumbo), which I will reprise in this series with saxophonist Woody Mankowski. I've shared some of these music beds with others at MJ and hope to post variations when they are ready.

This song has kind of a desert feel, yet also is a good cocktail song. We can all carry an oasis in the palm of our hand, no matter what the desert around us can do... don't you think? Also, would "Oasis On The Rocks" be a better title?

More from my series with Woody will follow. This is the first one completed. Let me know if you think this first mix is balanced evenly throughout. Thanks.

Drums: Dane Richeson
Bass: Arthur Kell
Guitar: Elliot Friedman

Project 2010 with Woody Mankowski (so far):
Seafood Gumbo Bop
Oasis On The Rocks
Saddle Shoe Sally

Vocal variations of this series:
Seafood Gumbo w/ AngelaHope

Older collab with Woody:
River Runs Through Me

If you haven't heard much of my jazz stuff, please check out all the draft mixes that ended up on the album RAIN BATHER. Maybe start with I Wanna Fly. Woody also plays on most of those songs.

Oh Yeah!
This is hot Tobin! Man that sax just shreds!

I'm not listening on very good speakers right now. On these speakers the sax sounds just a tad up front at the start of the song. The lead guitar sounds behind the sax when it comes in as well as the piano. Again, these speakers suck so when I listen on my studio monitors it may sound different.

Other than that this song is killer good. You guys tear it up!

Sax in the Mix
Its so hard to mix instruments of varying timbre. The sax sounded too soft in my studio speakers, but sounds too hot on my laptop as I replay it now. Definitely the second solo @ 1:14 is too loud, but he's wailing so well and it just didn't have the right edge in my headphones or in my quality speakers without that boost. man, so hard to decide. And the piano cut thru in my headphones, but is kind of backgroundish on my laptop. Urg. The sax sounds right during the last half of the tune, I think.

At last! Water!
This is a genre I don't listen to much, but after hearing this, I'm wondering why that is. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will check out these others you mentioned. Very nice sax. And yes, the mix sounds good to me. T

Always amazing!
Great sounds Tobin - as a mere mortal, I have to say I am totally envious of the virtuosity AND team playing going on here. Fantastic soling over such a cool rhythm section.
Love it!

Nothing quite like...
...an ice cold oasis on the rocks (or straight up, if it's called for) in a jazz club. Very live feel to this, Tobin. Love it. Balance sounds great. Very "spacious". Who's on the guitar?

Oasis indeed...
Love the sax... so good. Love the light, improvisational (duh, jazz!) nature of this, each one - piano - guitar, getting his turn to at the wheel... and then back to the saxman Woody.

A real fine piece of tunage (as RCA says).

the stratosphere is home to you
such great musicianship.. Tobin you are in a class by yourself here... a real piano yes?...

I'm knocked out by the players that you guys are...

I'm frustrated more and more as I try to do this thing... mixing in a DAW seems to leave a mix 2 dimensional... as I listen to favorite recordings and they have such depth and width... this recording also has such a 3D vibe... my question is HOW... how do you achieve it... I'm ready to give up... I want this quality in my recordings... and I'm no longer sure if a computer can do it... are you mixing on an outside counsel...

Thanks
Everything is recorded and mix on a computer/digitally, yes. But te band passes through a board first, so premix includes some filters and tweaks. On this track, tho, few filters were used or EQ changes, unlike when I recorded live in the old days to tape. This project just worked better originally at the board. Also, I'm going for an old school sound and want the band to sound like it sounds live when playing in front of you, with the sax slightly louder, etc. I mix using Logic Pro, trying really hard to separate instruments subtlety in the mix, adding reverb to the master track to keep it uniform. But I also master the 2-track using WAVES plugins in PEAK. Waves has fabulous mastering modules that separate different levels, combining limiting, EQing and compression. If anything, that is the extra edge I have. WAVES has gotten crazy expensive the last few years.

Yes, all real acoustic instruments mic'd separately, sometimes with two mics for a stereo feel.

imho is probably the most commercially viable tune I've heard om mj, can't wait to hear another version. This is another thoroughly enjoyable listen, exceptional piano riffs whoever that is, you?

like an oasis. This may be my favorite TM tune. Insanely bop drive in the rhythm section. I'm glad you broke your resolution. A brilliant live sound.

Sophisticated oasis....
This has a great, swinging movement, Tobin... As usual with your stuff, I don't have words to describe what I'm liking... Suffice to say that as I zone in on each element, I love it, and I love most how it all comes alive and intertwines...

Oasis
I like how this kind of jazz can sound so cool and smooth while swinging so fast. I'm just blown away by everyone's virtuosity. I love that drumming. And of course, the piano, sax, and guitar.
